Here's what we at least know:
It was written at from around the late 60s to 1971.

If one is basing an analysis of when the song was written on the lyrical content, the opening lines with the obvious Beatles/summer of love reference and the fact that the character is singing about the past, clearly sets 1967 as being some time ago, to imbue the time with nostalgia, both for the character, the song writer, and the listener. There’s no reason to think the lyrics weren’t written in the 1970s.

We're only supposing "Lucy" is from the Beatles song though. Brian could have been writing about his first smoke (or hash cake?) at college. Maybe it was a house party where a girl called Lucy baked the cakes.

It's not like Lennon coined the name. 'Lucy' could've been a reference to 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds', that's right; but 'Lucy' could've just as easily been an ex-girlfriend, a former crush, a cousin, a tutor, a dealer, a friend, a character from a film or television programme that he liked, etc.

After perusing this thread for a bit...it's seems easy enough to have a hierarchy of sorts to believe. We don't know 100% for certain obviously.
But a direct quote from a band member specifically referencing said song is the closest we've gotten and certainly trumps any "feelings", "beliefs", wiki-articles, potential unsourced documentary claims, or even other quotes from band members that do not specifically mention the song.
Certainly Brian is not infallible. But it's definitely a better source than any other we've seen presented here

That's why I think it's important to try to separate what we would've wanted it to be from what the evidence shows us. And I've made that mistake plenty of times, so this is not coming from a position of alleged superiority.

I've only just found this thread, and have waded through four pages with increasing incredulity.
If English is not your first language, you may be accidentally presenting an image of yourself that is less positive than you intend.
Or you may be an argumentative sod.
I'm sure it's the former, per site rules.
On the original question... "written shortly after Queen formed in 1970" is not mutually exclusive with "the first song created entirely in the studio", as in relative terms the 18 months between formation and De Lane Lea can conceivably be considered a "short" period.
So, both statements are correct.
It's still a gourd, though....

The user who insisted it'd been written in 1970 deleted many of their posts, decontextualising the replies.
