Roger and John went to Japan for five days in March, 1984, to promote The Works. After Japan, they also visited South Korea, Australia, and the US, doing 112 interviews and TV/radio appearances in over two weeks.
Below are my translations of some of those interviews with Japanese magazines, which I found in Japanese on the Japanese John Deacon fan site www.deaky.net. Please keep in mind that Roger and John’s words have gone through English-Japanese-English translations. I’ve also included a couple of YouTube clips of their TV appearances.

Interview with Rock Show magazine - excerpt from audio tape
John and Roger are interviewed by Rock Show magazine on March 27, 1984, and the article is published in their June issue of that year. Here is a translation of an excerpt not of the article, but of the transcript of the audio tape recording of the interview:
Rock Show: Okay well.. To finish off, I’d like to ask this. Here are some pictures of (Japanese) female singers and stars; which one do you find the most charming?
Roger: Ahh.. I gotta get closer… <sounds of Roger moving>
John: Oh dear… one person from here? Oh this one’s the same as this one. Ah, we’ve met this girl before, haven’t we, Roger?
Roger: Yeah, we definitely have!
John: It was for Flash Gordon, wasn’t it?
<The Interviewer and Interpreter are confused, wondering if
Hiroko Yakushimaru was in Flash Gordon.> [She actually met Queen at the Flash Gordon movie premiere, as seen in the 1981 Tour Diary.]
Roger: She’s a cute one.
John: Yeah, for sure.
Roger: Ahh, she’s good, too.
John: You pick first, Roger.
Roger: Why me first?
John: What on earth is the point of this exercise, haha!
<Interviewer explains>
John: Ahh, so you’ve been asking guys in other bands, too. You go ahead, Roger.
Roger: Well, we’ll start with this one. And then.. This one. I’ll go with these two.
Rock Show: You can only pick one.
Roger: Whaaaat, just one? That’s cruel, haha!
John: Pick only one.
Roger: Ahh, this is difficult. <After thinking about it for a while> Okay, I’ll go with this girl. <Apparently he picks Hiroko Yakushimaru> Did anyone else pick her?
Rock Show: No. Okay, Roger has picked; John, what about you?
John: Ummm…. Ahhh… <John has plenty of time to think about it but seems really stuck> <The Interviewer and Interpreter can be heard talking in Japanese: ”Okay, we gotta wrap this up soon…”; “Can I pack up this stuff?”> <sounds of people coming into the room> <John is still undecided> <The tape ends without waiting for John’s answer>
Appearance on TV Tokyo’s Tokio Rock TV, March 1984
- The main host asks where the “other members” are. John says “Freddie” is in London finishing a music video. The interpreter says, “One of the other members is still in London…”
- At about the 12-minute mark, Roger explains how staff members help answer fan letters. The TV hosts laugh about this, and the one on the left remarks, “I wonder if it’s really right to be doing that kind of thing, but anyway…”
Interview with Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper - excerpt
John: “When you’re doing this for so long, it’s easy to fall into the trap of what you’re used to. So for this album, we spent a long time on it, so that we could complete something that all four of us were happy with.”
Interview with radio DJ Keiko Imaizumi - notes
- John says his favourite Queen song is Dragon Attack
- Roger says his favourite Queen song is March of the Black Queen
Interview with Shukan Pureibooi (Playboy Weekly) April 24, 1984 issue - full article
For the first time in two years, Queen released a new album, The Works, and a new single, Radio Ga Ga. Without further delay, we interview the present-day supporting cast of Roger Taylor (drums) and John Deacon (bass).
Roger: What kind of readers read Weekly Playboy?
Playboy: Honest youth, from junior high school age to working adults read this magazine.
John: Oh! Sounds like a big magazine.
Playboy: So, it’s your first album in two years. What was the reason behind your two year break?
John: Roger was working on a solo album, but I wasn’t doing anything. Anyway, we all needed a break. We wanted to do some major cleaning up.
Playboy: Roger, what’s the difference between group work and solo work?
Roger: Well, with groups there are things you can’t do. There are also some opinions that you can’t really say within the group. From song to song, it’s getting to be that individual members can be influenced in a certain direction, but the group still comes first.
John: The question is how much we can do that within the framework of Queen.
Playboy: Incidentally, John, you’ve written only one song for this album.
John: Because it’s a competition. We have four songwriters in the group.
Roger: Plus, it’s also become a tradition that Freddie and Brian write most of the songs. It’s an absurd tradition, though.
John: Because the right way is to record whatever the best songs happen to be at that time.
Playboy: So, about that album…
Roger: It’s one of my favourites.
John: There are no fillers.
Roger: That’s right!
Playboy: Lastly, recently a lot of young British acts are doing well in the US--
Roger: Ahh, I have something to say about that. People are calling it the “British Invasion” but it’s like, wait a second. We can’t forget that British bands have been ahead of the curve for a long time now.
John: If you watch what we’re up to from now, you’ll understand right away.
Appearance on the TV show Waratte Iitomo!
- This variety show had been on air for only a couple of years at this point, but it would go on to break a world record for its 32-year run, ending in 2014.
- The host says that Roger has made a decision, using the word naitei. The other host asks how to say that word in English, and the first host answers, “crying” because the Japanese word for that sounds similar.
- The host in white asks whether Roger has dyed his hair. The host in navy says the host in white’s hair is naturally that colour, and that his dad was a stray cat. That’s why the host in white pretends to be a cat for a second.

Title: Queen is still cuuuuuute as ever, no matter how old they get!
We were able to talk with John and Roger of Queen, who are in Japan for promotion.
R: “We came to Japan and went to Harajuku [youth shopping hub in Tokyo]. I bought a really bright shirt.”
J: “Although we don’t really go out clothes shopping in London.” That’s a bit surprising, isn’t it? Roger, who’s already a dad, says, with a smile, “My kid is 3, but he’s already saying he wants to be a drummer. He’s hitting so many things.” OMG sooooo cute. Freddie worked with Michael Jackson on the title track to the Jacksons’ album following Thriller [Victory] -- an example of recent individual pursuits, but starting with South Africa in July, they’ll go on a world tour.
J: “We’re going to project images of skyscrapers in the background, and I think we’ll have a cool stage with our use of lighting and computers,” he says, full of eagerness!!
Let’s all get hyped up for these energetic old guys!!
Interview with Olive May 18 1984 issue - excerpts
Title: Queen ½ Interview
- Roger: “We think it’s very important to continue the band with the original members. When our egos flare up, we try to find ways to resolve it. We’re always arguing. But we decide things democratically.”
- John, on Brian: “I think he doesn’t like change.” Roger, on Brian: “I think he’s a bit too old-fashioned.”
Interview with FMfan, 1984 issue #10 - excerpt
Title: Special Interview - Queen
Interviewer: Steve Harris
John: “Our last album, Hot Space, was too disco, and so we lost many of our old fans -- especially in the US -- so we thought we’d try to win them back by reviving an older Queen sound with this new album.”
Roger: “I didn’t like Hot Space very much, but in a lot of ways, you can say it’s a progressive record. The fact that we went that funky seems like the source of our failure when we look back it now, but Another One Bites the Dust was such a huge hit that we could only think about heading in that direction. Freddie and John were also big into funk, also.”
John, on needing to find a vocalist if he were to do a solo album: “For example, Lionel Richie is the greatest. But he’s too big and wouldn’t have time for me, so I would have to find a new, no name artist with a fabulous voice.”
John: "It takes so long to make a Queen record. It could be because we’re older now, but we’re lazy and don’t prepare a single bit before going into the studio, so when we do, there are lots of things to do like rehearsals, writing songs, and it has become so tedious. What’s more, even if we were to go through the time and effort to write a song, it can be thrown away.”
