I prefer Smile's version of Polar Bear over Queen's. I really don't like the way Freddie sings that one. it is indeed. but this may be due to Smile's version being finished, whereas Queen's version never got anywhere near to completion. Had they liked the song enough, they may have worked on it and it may have evolved into something much better? the Queen version is a perfect example of Brian's comment that Freddie's vocal control wasn't quite there yet

I love Smile songs... and i really hope for a proper re-release of their material. I really enjoyed the Amigo (a 2003 solo album by Tim) rendition of Earth and Doin' Alright with Brian on guitar. Different but funny.

Smile were a very run of the mill 60's rock band. They had nothing special about them . A perfect example of the band being less than the sum of its parts. Brian and Roger had talent , Tim less so. Together they were boring. It took Freddie to bring the whole thing to life.

Smile and (Freddie pre-Queen) were very much caught in the style of the time. The eclectic music scene of the early 1970s and the four band personalities coming together at that time were what made Queen what they were. To credit/attribute "bringing the whole thing together" to Freddie is (at best) an inability to see the whole picture, or (at worst) Blatant Freddie-Miopia.

I've never viewed Smile that way especially in relation to Queen. If you listen to Brian's guitar solos, the backing vocal harmony structure and cross section of musical styles. Some heavy, some slower songs some interesting melodies you have a prototype for what would follow. Talking about Brian's playing in Smile, the very basics of his delay solo ( Son and Daughter live/ Brighton Rock) are there. The solo in Earth could be viewed as a forerunner Killer Queen. very much a band in which the some of the parts were more than the individual and that some when added too produced the band we're still fans of

And the block vocal harmonies, albeit in their infancy, are there as well.

Roger and Brian took a lot of Smile stuff and put it into Queen`s early work. You can hear this in the first album, and there was "Doing all right" a Smile song on it. They wanted to keep on playing music together after Tim left. Add Freddie and John and the rest is history.

I do wish Queen had done a version of "Step On Me" with Freddie on vocals.
