Well, I've received the tapes back and all the contents except for the bonus SECAM VHSs (which I will receive in a couple of days).
First, the bad news: The U-MATIC contains the local version of Rare Live. :-( I guess it is the master from which all the Argentinian VHSs were dubbed. It has a very good picture quality and a decent mono audio track, but hardly an improvement.
Now, the good news: Everything else looks and sounds fab! I will be uploading the stuff this week. By default, I will upload high quality H.264 files (15 Mbps MP4s) at the original resolution/frame rate and interlaced plus stereo (or dual mono) 48 kHz/24-bit FLAC files (lossless). I will also take requests to upload the original AVI files carrying the uncompressed YUV 4:2:2 10-bit stream.
Hello everybody! Just a short message to tell that I will start uploading after Xmas... We did very last-minute arrangements for a trip to Patagonia to see the total solar eclipse - which was stunning! And hopefully we will be returning to our home on December 25th.
I got the tapes transferred, but I got stuck with a huge work load in the past months, so I didn't have time to upload them. I have the uncompressed AVI files in 2 mirrored HDDs waiting for me to edit and re-encode them to hi-Mbps H.264 mp4s. I have a week of holidays next week that I am going to take at home (for the first time since this project started), so I might be able to do some if not all.
Unfortunately, the most promising tape (the umatic) only had the local version of Rare Live. It seems to be the master from where all the VHSs were copied. The item might have some value. Its contents do not.
