The Millionaire Waltz is one of my favourite ever Queen tracks. Full of intricately woven harmonies and melodies, and some lovely guitar work from May. I'd love to be able to get hold of the multitracks for this, just to pick it apart. The heavy part is wonderful, and I remember being totally surprised by that when I first heard it. You forgot to mention the 2 odd minutes of brilliance with just John and Freddie and just John in general... He really made the bass sing during that album, infact... you could say ADATR was that ONE album where they all peaked 'instrumentally' Freddie with his vocals Brian with the extensive guitar overdubs (the last album really to showcase) Roger I guess on drums and his amazing work on Drowse Then last but certainly not least... John, as I mentioned... his bass parts were just brilliant on almost every song on that album, almost showcasing all of his skills and what you can do with only four strings. From just your standard one or two bass line Tie your mother down, to the very intricate bass lines on The millionaire Waltz, the softness on Teo Torriatte and everything in-between. The album in general was that bookend in that very extravagant era in Queen... That's why I would love for the Earls Court to be released as it is.... THEEE live show that showcases that bridge that Queen were at... Heavy and progressive heading into their 'Hits' era... AND... It has John on 'lead' vocals

ooooh yeah! ADATR, my favourite album by far Could be listening in loop mode forever, specially Side One, and most specially the trio Long Away/Millionaire Waltz/You and I. I´ve always been also a big fan of Roger´s penned & sung Queen tracks and I consider Drowse to be his finest.

Although I could write down half a dozen Queen songs I think are superior to anything on ADATR, I, subjectively, think of it as Queen's best *album*. I emphasize 'album' because I'm not talking about the playing, the recording/engineering/mastering, the songwriting, etc., but about the coherence, the sense of an album being a single piece of art, and not a collection of smaller pieces. I think there is some degree of that on Queen II and SHA, it is definitely there on ANATO and ADATR, but it's not there on NOTW or any of the albums after that.
In some details I think ANATO stands out over ADATR - I think the 'cold opening' of Death On Two Legs / God Save The Queen-finale beats the ADATR intro/outtro, for instance - but if I had to convince someone of the quality of Queen and I could only play them one full album and they'd never hear anything by Queen ever again, then I'd pick ADATR over ANATO, and even over my personal favorite Queen II.

A Day at the Races is my favorite album (ever made).
I love the piano, vocals, melodies, guitar, bass, drums...everything. In my opinion, it's Queens' only true concept-album, and the theme is Love.
Good Old-fashioned lover boy is fantastic! The only song I don't care much for is Tie Your Mother Down.
Deacons' You and I and Taylors' Drowse are great too.
When I first started listening to it I didn't like it all that much, but it grew quickly on me. Same with Sheer Heart Attack.

When I first started listening to it I didn't like it all that much, but it grew quickly on me. Same with Sheer Heart Attack. I often saw QII as a concept album, in fact... I saw their first three albums as a loose trilogy (Freddie's songs) Good vs evil flowing from QI through to QII, some say an insight into Freddie's childhood and then on SHA Lily of the Valley was somewhat like the final chapter, an adult deciding to leave that part of life behind and time to grow up... Although Freddie did say in an article that Lily of the Valley had no link to Seven seas of rhy and the songs on QII however the article went... BUT.... They all mentioned in various interviews over their carers that it is up to the listener to make up their own imagination's and that's how I like to see their first three albums more so Freddie's song writing on those three albums as, a lose concept trilogy good vs evil and the bookend on SHA with Lily of the Valley. But definitely ADATR is all but an album of love and heartache in a loose concept really but done in an beautifully artistical way

„An album of love and heartache“ - what a beautiful description and so true. It‘s my second favorite album and I wouldn’t want to miss a song. The lyrics are their absolute best - „You and I“ is one of the most poetic love songs ever written. The album has a great beginning, then builds up to it’s climax with STL and White Man (am I the only one that thinks it is totally underrated?), but there’s no chance to feel too sad, because the Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy comes along and lightens up the mood (this odd song placement always makes me smile).
It‘s like reading a good book - I‘m almost sad when it’s over. If I wanted to introduce Queen to somebody, this would be my album of choice.
