Queen: A new "queen" of English music. Their first album, already published in Spain, reveals them as a group of international range with a quartet of COMPACT AND STRONG MUSIC.
A group is arriving in Spain in force. An LP is selling a lot, surprisingly because it doesn't have the stamp of the nº 1 printed on its cover... The group and the LP have the same name, for some already familiar and for others unknown, but for all, here is our touch of attention: Queen.
A few months ago I was talking right here, with enthusiasm, about an American rock band called Dooble Brothers. It all seemed simple and clear: there was a quality and a marketability, some extraordinary songs... And success could not pass by. Today the Dooble Brothers have their <<Long Train Runnin'>> on the national list and their <<The Captain and me>> among the best selling LP's. It all seemed simple and it has been. Logic has prevailed.
Today we are talking about another band, this time English, with very different concepts to those of Dooble Bros, but equally valid because they bring us novelty and extraordinary faculties. Queen is a quartet that has managed to impress many with their first LP, and everything that follows from it.
In Queen there is a strange mix of influences, or simply contacts with other giants. Their vocal growths remember to those of Plant in Led Zeppelin, their lyrical base evokes the immersed development of Pink Floyd, and their environment of rock force can be compared to the best world-wide exponents. Certainly, to find these qualities, this mixture in a new group, moves us to surprise, because it is not habitual to find a line until after some months or of several discs. In Queen everything has been faster, their first LP, is almost excessive, demolishing, almost improper in a first disc because in it there is a total intensity, a strong and a truly superb quality, even difficult to collect in an LP, recorded in the cold studios. Queen has known how to give warmth to that recording and express all its vehement grandiosity in <<Liar>> or any of the songs that form the extensive album.
One of the main skills of the quartet lies in knowing how to combine the high <<riffs>> vocals with a spectacular instrumental mass, in which not only the block but also the individual terms stand out, a rhythmic section, of support, extremely moved and vital, and a solo section as versatile as it is virtuous, because there is a great quality in each of the four members, one of those few cases in which you can find a group of boys with ideas and the way of knowing how to express them.
Queen is formed by Freddie Mercury on lead vocals and keyboards, Brian May on guitar and vocals, Roger Meadows Taylor on drums and vocals, and Deacon John on bass guitar. The first three are also the composers and lyricists of all the tracks.
Freddie Mercury was born on September 5, 1946 in Zanzibar, was educated in India and hence the strong exotic orientation that often takes the music of Queen, naturally in the themes mostly composed by him. Before becoming a musician he revealed himself as a remarkable drawer and graphic artist, then he studied piano and composition and formed a group at the age of 14, on a family level. He alternated his work with music until in 1970 he <<designed>> the idea and concepts of Queen, which he formed when he met Brian and Roger.
Brian May was born in the field, far from the cities, 23 years ago. As a physics student he worked as an astronomer for four years, until he became increasingly enthusiastic about music and specialized in finding new sounds with his guitar. The depth of the space has inspired him not few times in his themes, that have great developments of ethereal and sensitive beauty, In 1968, in almost professional plane he formed a group with his friend Roger, the group was called Smile.
Roger Meadows Taylor was born in Norkfolk, also 23 years ago, although he lived from the age of 8 in Cornwall, he was going for dental hygienist when the music interested him more, since from the age of 12 he would play it in school groups, he began to perfect his style and to learn from the great teachers. When he formed Smile with Brian they developed a lot of their ideas, but it was evident that they needed something more than just carrying them out. When he met Freddie, a trio of born creators was completed, with only one member missing, since in 1970 Queen functioned as a trio, with some basses who passed through the ranks of the unethical group, without finally joining, in February 1971, Deacon John arrived.
Deacon John was born on August 19, 1951 in Leicester. At the age of 12 he was playing the rhythm guitar, but at 14, more in keeping with his way of life, he switched to the bass. At that age he already commented on playing in various groups at the Beaucham Grammar School and later at Chelsea College. It is a great technique that only lacks a greater degree of creativity, for the moment he prefers not to compose and contribute all his capacity to the sound of the quartet, leaving the other for his three companions.
Queen, with its first LP already in Spain, is currently causing a sensation. The record has surpassed incredible levels of sales, limited until today to the big ones of second row, and continues in boom, reason why it can even reach the sales of the big ones of first row. And all in silence, as a strong and effective surprise. Some unknown that you are being discovered by the public itself, an obvious symptom of a quality and we merit, although DISCO EXPRES already predicted something similar the first time he spoke of this group, when I commented on his album.
Attention to Queen, an exuberant queen who is lazily captivating the young Spanish public. His music is pure dynamite.
