Hi there folks! Have any of you tried to do another vocal restoration of the Golders Green concert? In Bootlegzone they have done amazing things with Xtrax Stems and ISS... something, I don't remember the exact name. Sadly, the software is not free, but maybe one of the professional folks here can give it a try so as to improve Freddie's vocals

That was done like 10 years ago if I recall properly. Isolation technology has improved a lot since then and we could get far better results these days.

Years ago I played around in Audacity and my minimal fuss recipe is:
Import track (For example try on FTS or OB initially). Apply Vocal Isolator at strength 20, split to mono and delete the right channel. Amplify this remaining centre mono track by about 20 to 30db and use stock Bass Cut equalization profile. Import untouched stereo track and mix together to personal preference. This benefits not losing what is there already in the stereo spectrum, but also brightens up the overall sound a bit. You can get carried away with reducing some remaining snare and bass spikes on the mono 'vocal' track, but I found the overall result pleasing as was. No digital wash or artefacts.

I've tried this using moises website. It struggles in some places to separate the vocals but I've been able to bring out the vocals in most parts of the songs. Unfortunately the vocals have a lot of reverb on the source so can't really be reduced (or a least I can't reduce them). Here's a link to the result: app.box.com/s/y2uwfxxz0zhnnh59pm7d2cb7a2xs0hvcIt's not great but I think an improvement.

It has always made me wonder why Queen - at the time of preparing the On Air Boxset - with all the "amazing staff" incl. "genius music engineers" couldn't track down the original tapes and do something to fix that recording, closely working with BBC.

Considering the BBC's track record, i wouldn't get my hopes up on the multitracks even still being around. Hell, i wouldn't even be surprised if all that's left are transcription-service lps and dubs of the finished mix. Also, the buried vocals make me wonder if it even was multitracked (maybe it was a live-to-4-track.

I remember one of the engineers recalling that Freddie was nervous and over-singing, going sharp on most of it. So once I heard the recording after reading that I just assumed that's how it was mixed as a fix.

Try using Spleeter, it is open source and has a very nice dataset (apperantly dozens of terabytes of master tracks were used to train it). only con is that you have to know a tad bit of shell.

Spleeter tends to make audio go out of sync so its not ideal
