Actually, it's a cover up of an older Freddie tattoo. Had the itch to get an upgrade. Here are two ideas shot my way by my artist. Any thoughts are welcome. Old tattoo: New concept #1: New concept #2 (old tat wouldn't be so visible since I've been getting laser treatments):

They both look great. Which one do you prefer?

My thoughts are they look bloody painful! I've never had a tattoo, and I don't think I ever would, but obviously each to their own. With a gun to my head I'd probably go for the crown one but they both look good.

I think I prefer the one with Freddie wearing the crown. It's regal and majestic...I love the expression on his face. For the background, I thought about having stage lights to help cover up the old tattoo (and maybe a quote or keeping his signature). Right now I'm getting laser removal and I'll be getting my third treatment in a month. It won't completely remove it, but just enough to help make the job easier to cover it.

The issue with portrait tattoos in my view is that there's such a risk of ending up with an approximation as opposed to a likeness....like when one goes to Madame Tussauds and you can tell who they're supposed to be...
That said, whoever did NOTW on your other arm did a very good job, and it's not as if there aren't any examples of portrait tattoos done really well.
Overall, I'd stick with what you have and have something new elsewhere (although I accept it's sort of too late if you've already started layering it off)

Originally, I would have agreed with you. That's why I got the original tattoo. I've seen some pretty God damn awful portraits, especially of Freddie. Absolutely hideous. So instead I wanted something simple, but after meeting the guy who did my NOTW tattoo I knew he'd do a kickass Freddie. The concepts above are his drawings, and honestly, the one with the crown is so eye catching. I agree with someone previously who said they'd want to raise it. That's why I'm going through the laser removal, so that potentially it could be raised. I'm sure he'll send me new concept drawings once my old tattoo has faded better. It'll provide him more flexibility in creating a better tattoo.

What kinda money you paying for this? Not cheap. I imagine the actual tattoo with be just under $1000. However, the laser removal is $200 per session...and I've gone through two so far. And I'll need at least one more visit. It's my hobby...so it's worth it to me. There's no better feeling than fresh ink!

Wow, I had no idea tattoos were so expensive. I'm all about supporting hobbies so I get it. My opinion? Crown all the way.

So I'm getting the cover up next month and will be talking to my artist soon on the final design. Thought I'd ask for some fresh thoughts. I think I'm definitely going with the image below. I've really struggled to find a cooler image of Freddie. For the past several months I keep coming back to this one. The only question is what to put over the rest of the old Freddie. Stage lights seem to be the most natural idea. But then again, I've also thought about some kind of Montreux setting. If I can get Freddie's face slightly higher up, I will. After all, I've gone through 5 removal sessions so I should have more options now. Any thoughts would be most welcome and appreciated.

Is it just me (or my browser)!? I can't see the images you're discussing on this post. Which is a shame as I'm very interested in tattoos and especially Queen ones - I have a sleeve with Brian May 'Back to the Light' stars incorporated.

I don't know. The ones from my prior posts disappeared but I can see the ones I've just posted. Strange.

Some image hosts automatically delete links after a period of time. Not sure if that's what's happened, but I can't see them either.

Let me try again. Keep in mind, these are just rough concept designs. My favorite design: My original concept idea but I'm leaning away from it (placement is all wonky due to the old ink I'm covering up): Alternate placement: And for reference, this is what's underneath (you can make it out if you look carefully at the above rough designs):

If you're getting it lasered off, how visible would it still be?
Genuine question, as it seems like you're positioning the cover to obscure the original as well as removing the original.
Of the two images, I'd have the one with less black on it...because fading.

Of the two images, I'd have the one with less black on it...because fading. Black and grey ink are actually less prone to fading. As for your first question, my old ink is either grey or gone now...as it was explained to me, laser removal speeds the process of fading since all ink fades over time (some more than others obviously). Essentially it provides a fresh layer on top of the skin to inject new ink into. Once the cover up is finished you shouldn't be able to notice the old ink...except for probably me because I'll know exactly where to look. But that's the thing with cover ups. You have to find the best design that you won't have to compromise too much with. That's why I'm steering away from the crown tattoo...it just seems too risky. I'm sure to some of you I must seem crazy to put myself through all this. It certainly hasn't been easy getting to this point, but it'll be worth it, I'm sure.
