Hi, this is my first thread, I hope you could answer to this as we already know, There are just a few days until the 44th anniversary of those two magnificent and spectacular concerts at the Earls Court, and even though there has not been an official launch of those concerts, since at Queen the Great, they talked about the Hyde Park concert. but they jumped from 1976 to 1977 in the NOTW era, they skipped the part of talking about Earls Court, I've always been curious because Brian and Roger in all the documentaries that there have been of Queen never talk about those two concerts, they show very few images, yes, but they don't talk about the concerts as such. I do not understand, if it is one of the best concerts of Queen after Hammersmith and Montreal. as a consequence of that I have created my own theories as to why they have not made an official Earls Court release. One of them is because as you have been noticed in the bootleg versions of vhs and antidens, at the end of each song; The image turns dark, (example: the camera is turned off when tie your mother down is about to end and it turns on again when ogre battle starts), it is as if they had paused and at the beginning of another song they turned it on again. Again, I do not know if that defect is in the video tapes that QPL owns. The other one is now with professional audio (multitrack), I feel like they were planning to launch those concerts years later, but the sound engineers did not realize that they did not press the record button, in order to start recording the audio and they realized in the middle of the concert and logically only half of the concert of the 1st night was recorded, something similar to what happened in knebworth '86 but with the video. error that would not be repeated on the 2nd and last night of the race tour. Another is the one that we have all had and is the failure of Freddie's microphone in several songs from the 1st night such as: 1- tie your mother down 2- ogre battle 3- death on two legs 4- '39 5- Bohemian rhapsody That would not be an excuse to release the concerts, they could be patched with the audio of other concerts such as Copenhagen, Inglewood or Bristol. Anyway, all the fans are in one way or another disappointed or sad, cos queen did a re-release of greatest hits, and it is sad since they publish and talk about the same thing Always Hammersmith rainbow greatest hits Budapest Hammersmith rainbow Hammersmith rainbow Enough! : '( fans want to see something new, fans want to see: official hyde park, official earls court, official Houston 77, official paris 79, some live album from other tours, as well as live killers. Forgive me if I get excited, but it is that if it makes me sad not to see some new audiovisual material of my favorite band since I can remember. I love the Hammersmith, rainbow, Budapest, Montreal concerts. but we already know a lot about those concerts. Earls court was about to be released in late 90s.
Like at BBC it was canceled, instead of that, EMI released Rocks, also Rocks 2 never happened as it was planned.
New record contracts are not the same as it was 20 years ago. Most contracts are for a catalogue of songs. In 2011 Queen signed for 3 years and about 200 songs. Record company decides how to use them.

I have had a bootleg vid. of the EC performance(s) - including the 'camera blackouts' between songs - for close to 30 years. It would be very nice to have an official release, but it doesn't seem plausible.

I don't think so, BM and RT are a bit jealous with those files Although a live ADATR album would be very well received, with recordings of the Inglewood, Copenhagen, Bristol, Liverpool 1st and 2nd night concerts and obviously EC 1st and 2nd, it doesn't matter if there were wrong notes or voice errors, it doesn't matter. although it only remains to dream that one day to have an official release of those recordings |

But, when they release a product like the NOTW box set, costing £100 (UK), which fans had to purchase complete to get one CD of interest, is it surprising they don't sell millions of these? Just give us bog standard properly mixed CDs of Houston, Hammersmith 1979, and several others you could name, and perhaps a tarted up (but standard) bluray of Earls Court, and I'm sure they would sell well. Why does everything have to be in a cost prohibitive lavish box set, with a load of reproduced tat that we don't want, or will only look at once? I had to buy NOTW on vinyl in the box set, and I haven't got a bloody record player! |

Like Hammersmith and rainbow, those concerts are available in fancy boxes, however, that is so outrageous, and I think the same as you, we just want the cd or blu ray and some mini book with a summary of that concert (this would still be acceptable), but not filler material that we are not interested in. in my case, I have never bought any article from QPL, and I will not do it until they publish something worthwhile |

In the NOTW box set, for example, there's much included that fans generally don't need or want.

Even if they did patch it up, you would then get some fans complaining that it had been 'fixed', so either way they can't win. |

I imagine it could be released some time next year or in 2027, after that, I'll lose all confidence! but, as you have seen in the previous answers, it is not easy to release a concert like Earls Court. it could not convince people, I know, I also find it difficult to accept it, but what else is left. My two cents...
1) Release a double CD (i.e. Audio release only) of Earls Court (can be mixed from 2 nights to patch holes from either night etc).
2) Put the best quality video (which isn't saying much!!) of either night (or both) on YouTube for free. That way they can't claim that it isn't of a good enough standard to officially release for sale.
3) The above two points will never happen....

And related to the TS's question, I guess that they want to release only the best of the best as they are "Queen" after all, this ultimate & flawless band.

I remember this problem with the Earl's Court prospective release being reported in the FC magazine. The thing that I couldn't understand at the time and still can't is, Queen Productions obviously had a tape of Earl's Court that they allowed the fan club to play at the convention, and that tape seemed to be fine. That means Freddie's voice was recorded on the piano microphone, because it's on that tape.
So, why couldn't QPL use the tape that they gave the fan club to play as the basis for a new release....? Has nobody else wondered this?
Oh regarding the Queen Fan Club's contact with the band, while it was always a separate company they were always in contact with the band pretty directly over some things. QPL would report prospective releases to the fan club and there are pictures of Jacky with Freddie at his hat party, and I think she was at the Wembley aftershow party.
As far as autographed items are concerned... I'd be surprised if any record sleeve or photo sent from the fan club was ever autographed by any member of Queen, and I suspect that Jacky and her team practiced the band's autographs to be able to give the less keen-eyed fans a convincing enough experience of getting a Queen signature. It's a bit shit really since sometimes these 'authenticated' items would fetch high prices at auctions....

It's a long time since I watched it on youtube but the Earl's Court footage and performance is brilliant, and I do not remember at any point Freddie's mic 'dropping out'. Is there any evidence of this? I do not disbelieve Jackie btw, just never understood that one.
In particular on the available footage, the sound mix is great, John's Music Man bass sounding amazing. I guarantee if it gets a release it will be compressed/eq'd to death like they did with Rainbow and Hammersmith, (and Wembley now I think of it) and John will again be buried/lost in the mix.
And I wouldn't be surprised if they were to master it from PAL to NTSC again, as with Rainbow, meaning the original bright video look/resolution is permanently lost and it feels like there's a haze filter over it.
Grumble, moan. I don't like what they do to 70s Queen concerts on video.

While we're on it, Magic Years Four became Champions of the World which was a kind of compressed Magic Years with the Made In Heaven update. I was always surprised that never got a DVD release, but then I suppose they've released These are the days of our lives documentary instead.

So with the Rare Live versions of Earl's Court content like You Take my Breath Away, and the Killer Queen Medley, are those just the video feed versions again? I thought those were taken from the multitrack. Even the Death on Two Legs in the Rags to Rhapsody documentary from EC is intact, none of these "drop outs" seen at all

You've answered your own question.
If multi has no piano Mike, but they've released snippets, then logically either
A) they just chucked out the stereo FOH mix.
B) they found some other source, mixed THAT, and synchronised it to the Earls Court footage.
C) they're lying about the dropout, despite having a record company begging for content (at the time)

But then, why is there still no release? i don't understand why Queen fans (after all this time) still don't "get" QPL. As pg says above. it'll require hard work, so no, it probably won't happen. Before a project is given the green light, it has to pass a very simple test. here's a handy formula for any fans still wrestling with the will they/won't they conundrum (it can be applied to any suggested release): Rule 1: B > T Rule 2: R = 100xE Rule 3: M = 5xR B = Boredom Threshold (how long (months) before QPL will lose interest) T = Time to bring project to market (months) E = Effort/Work required by QPL (months) M = Potential Market (£1,000s) R = Initial Revenue (£1,000s) hope this helps  |
