I've noticed that the solo albums of Brian are mostly missing from Spotify.
Were they ever published there? If so, do we know why he (or they) decided to remove the albums?

As far as I know they have never been on Spotify nor on any other streaming platform. However, there are rumours that Brian will re-issue his albums in a box set someday. But I don't know any particular information.

they're probably not on Spotify due to copywrite issues.

Back to the light used to be on there, it was the first time I'd heard that album. I've not used it since they introduced a load of ads. The cross used to be on there too, along with another band of the same name.

Probably they have been removed because 5 or 6 years ago a Brian May anthology on the same wave of Rog's "The Lot" set was in the pipeline (beforehand it was even announced on his page the remastered edition of Brixton Academy on home video). I believe it was all stopped due to the committment with Q+AL and because at the same time the band had to release their first (and unique to date) multiformat: Live In Japan. I am sure that his catalogue will be online as soon as the boxed set is out, one day.

Yeah the fact that Brian's solo stuff isn't on Spotify or iTunes has annoyed the hell out of me for years. I remember a few years back being really happy about The Lot being put on Spotify and hoping something similar would happen with Brian, yet so far nothing. It would also be nice to get the Smile stuff on there.
I'm also just now seeing that Mr. Bad Guy and Barcelona are on Spotify. Those have to be recent developments because I've also been frustrated with those records not being available in the past.

Barcelona has been available for a while.

Both of his albums used to be on Spotify but disappeared a couple of years back. No idea why. Starfleet was never on it.

You could always add the albums locally?

We know how much of a perfectionist he is. His solo work never got remastered and might sound outdated on streaming services.

I've often wondered this too! His whole solo catalogue is unavailable to purchase except second hand.
