Here’s what Bob has to say on his site: A couple takes of Crazy Little Thing Called Love were filmed by the BBC during soundcheck, perhaps as a rehearsal for the upcoming charity show on Dec 26. The audio is of one single take, although some bits of the visuals don't match, indicating that the final product is a compilation of the takes.

Nice one! Never heard of this one before. Great that I can still discover something new after all these years.

As far as I know the only true TOTP re-recording was Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy, all the others were the studio versions or slight remixes...?

My uneducated guess is that it was shot to be aired but never did.

I've for years known about this performance and it's always intrigued me. But the fact that it's always been stated that it was filmed by the BBC when I believe that ITV were the ones who filmed the Kampuchea concerts just adds to the mystery. Edit: If CLTCL at Bristol was filmed by BBC then surely they would've shown the footage of the Kampuchea concerts? Also, the concerts will filmed by EMI films. I've seen no mention of the BBC.

ITV was a bunch of individual local channels back then which all shared content, it's possible EMI films recorded the concert and certain regions picked it up to air.

The BBC credit is probably due to there not being a full understanding of how things work in the UK, so everything aired on tv here gets labeled BBC on bootlegs.
correct. the local ITV franchise was HTV (West).
We had Carlton on channel 3 / Granada on channel 5.

I am not 100% sure but it may have been on Tyne-Tees TV(could have been a Saturday morning childrens show)which was a ITV local channel. I have seen this video somewhere back in the time it was originally released and when ITV got mentioned, it jogged my memory.

According to TV pop diaries this filmed performance was shown on (and thus presumably filmed exclusively for) BBC show "Mainstream" - "Music, news and entertainment. from all over the country."
Show BBC1, Tuesday 11th December 1979 at 22.15.
Also - this footage is on film, the Queen Kampuchea gig is on video. So there's no link at all with the footage of Concert for Kampuchea, completely different crews etc for different purposes. Although it's possible this item was referencing that upcoming week of gigs.

LWT on the weekends. we had ATV (Midlands) - which became Central. ATV Midland's output included Crossroads, TISWAS, Police 5 (a precursor to Crimewatch), Bull seye, Golden Shot, Star Soccer, New Faces and Family Fortunes. Dreadful times.

This has become a bit of a local channel nostalgia thread.😆
