Queen were not famous for television appearances: they made few TV appearances over the years and, most of them, were at the beginning of their career for the promotion of their singles, like 'Seven Seas Of Rhye', 'Killer Queen' and 'Now I'm Here'.
In addition to appearances on British television, some Queen promotional videos found space on several American television programs, several years before the advent of MTV. This is the case with 'The Midnight Special', a music program broadcast on NBC from 2nd February 1973 to 1st May 1981. The first video to be broadcast in this program was 'Bohemian Rhapsody', aired in the episode of 30 January 1976 (it was probably the original one filmed in November 1975, but it could be a special video made for the broadcast); at the time the song was spending its last few days at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Below is a short list of episodes of 'The Midnight Special' in which Queen music videos were broadcast:
- 9th April 1976: 'Bohemian Rhapsody';
- 13th August 1976: 'You're My Best Friend';
- 3rd December 1976: 'Bohemian Rhapsody';
- 4th February 1977: 'Somebody To Love';
- 25th March 1977: 'Tie Your Mother Down';
- 29th April 1977: 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'Somebody To Love' and 'Tie Your Mother Down';
- 6th January 1978: 'We Are The Champions';
- 17th February 1978: 'We Are The Champions';
- 19th January 1979: 'Bicycle Race' (maybe the one seen on 'Greatest Flix' in 1981 or the one included on 'Greatest Video Hits 1' in 2002?) and 'Fat Bottomed Girls';
- 20th July 1979: 'Love Of My Life';
- 8th February 1980: 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love';
- 14th March 1980: 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love';
- 18th April 1980: 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love';
- 12th September 1980: 'Bohemian Rhapsody';
- 24th October 1980: 'Another One Bites The Dust';
- 23rd January 1981: 'Flash'.
Also, on 17th March and 29th September 1978 the Midnight Special salute to Queen was broadcast.
