Interesting thread. For what it's worth, I think Q+/GH3 was released a bit too early; they should've waited at least until 2001. BUT: even then, they wouldn't have had enough of solid hits for making up a full Greatest Hits album just from strictly Queen material. Leftover singles that were released, but not hits, yes, but there's a reason they don't call it Greatest Leftovers, right?
I think what they should've done instead, is waited a few more (20?) years after all the Queen+ remixes and whatnot had ran out of steam, and release a Queen+ collaboration compilation instead, including:
WWRY (with 5ive) WATC (with Robbie Williams) AOBTD (with Wyclef Jean etc.) Flash (with Vanguard) BoRhap (with Muppets) Somebody To Love (live with George Michael) TSMGO (live with Elton John) Under Pressure (Rah Mix) Amandla (with the 46664 group) Say It's Not True (with Paul Rodgers) C-Lebrity (with Paul Rodgers) There Must Be More To Life Than This (with Michael Jackson) You Are The Champions (with Adam Lambert) WWRY (with Beyonce etc.) AOBTD (Miami Project)
...and then try to get the Rod Stewart version of Let Me Live (Another Piece Of My Heart) finished, that would make 16 tracks. With the Bowie version of Cool Cat, that's 17. Easily one full compilation album without the need of calling it a proper Queen hits compilation or having to mix the + stuff with the proper Queen stuff.
As for a proper Queen Greatest Hits III, that's more difficult, and needs non-hit singles included, and my guess is as good as anyone else's. The real problem of having to deal with the Queen+ things, however, would be dealt with nicely by making that a compilation on its own.

It´s difficult to justify a GH3 only with one new album (Made In Heaven) and one single (No One But You)...But QPL was in the making of being what it´s today........
A machine trying to catch your money with useless releases...

Well Deeps Cuts were useless too.. I mean...There are 3 or 4 different tracks which could have beed released in 2011 CDs. Besides that...For a collector, useless release. And the three "new" tracks of Queen Forever could have been edited as CD Single....But QPL needed money....Better a "big" release...
Anyway as i said "It´s difficult to justify a GH3 only with one new album and one single" GH3 was in 1999...Deep Cuts and Queen Forever were released 10+ years after.

Every compilation release with anything extra in some cases are always decisions of record companies. GH III was released in 1999 instead of 2001 because it was the millennium. Also Forever was to be released in 2011 instead of 2014. So when Queen resigned their contract with universal in 2013, forever was an obligation from their previous contract which was postponed due to MJ estate. GH re-re-release is again a record company decision. Also when an artist or a band ends their contract or don't deliver an album, the record company release a compilation. While we could blame Queen productions about not releasing boxset with unreleased songs, we can't blame them for compilations.

I don´t mind who made the decission...Band or company. I´m talking about the useless of all this kind of releases for fans.
I don´t mind if it was the millenium or the end of the world...The GH3 was a crappy release after one single disc and a song new since the last GH2 in 1991. C´mon! They had to take songs like Las Palabras De Amor or Princes Of The Universe...Then Tie Your Mother Down or Spread Your Wings should have been released in GH1 ...
Anyway...Anyone here is free to considerate GH3 as a good release...As i´m free to say that it´s a joke as CD. Just different tastes... Barcelona, Driven By You, AOBTD (that horredous mix) or The Show Must Go On (Live) are not Queen...(I´m a die hard Elton John fan and i don´t find logic to see that song on a Queen GH).
I bought it when it was release so i bought the VHS...Fortunately, i was able to sell them and earn some money years ago...What a waste of space in my room

What I'd do is just have all the hits that were left out in chronological order, though I guess it world be better to keep it as Queen+ because then in 40 years time it can be rererererererereleased with a special cardboard cover and 46 wax cylinders of the same songs but with a different person on the front of each one.
Anyways, here's the track listing:
Side one-
1. Flick of the Wrist 2. Tie Your Mother Down 3. Body Language 4. Las Palabras De Amor 5. Thank God It's Christmas 6. Scandal 7. These Are the Days of Our Lives
Side two-
8. Heaven for Everyone 9. A Winter's Tale 10. Too Much Love Will Kill You 12. Let Me Live 13. You Don't Fool Me 14. No One But You
Still not amazing, I included some non top 20 songs but only ones that are really regarded as hits, hence no Spread your wings ect. Included Flick of the Wrist as it was a double A Side with Killer Queen, but maybe I would have a different track as the first track even though it wouldn't be chronological, just because it's not well known amongst the general public

In Germany they heavily advertised greatest Flix 3 with the "new" Videos for Princes of the Universe and Las Palabras de Amor.

Queenmanga's list is what I would've gone with perhaps in a slightly different order.
GH3 should've been a simple roundup of all the UK singles that didn't make GH1/2 - conveniently that came to 17 tracks, just like the first 2 Hits compilations.

As has been pointed out, compilations are record company decisions. Record companies as a business need to generate an income by selling the music of the artists that are signed into the company. It’s a much more straight forward operating if the artist has new current material to sell.

queenmanga two great track lists.
I’ve never been a fan of GH3 but certainly would have found your track listing a lot more interesting.

I think that instead of a Greatest Hits III, it would have been better to have an ultimate reissue of the first two Greatest Hits with a bonus disc of the other UK singles.
Greatest Hits - Ultimate Edition
CD 1 : Greatest Hits CD 2 : Greatest Hits II CD 3 : Other UK Singles (see my Greatest Hits III tracklist) CD 4 : Non-UK Singles (see my Greatest Hits IV tracklist) CD 5 : B-Sides

As soon as the record company called QPL to release this...I don´t see QPL saying NO! Easy money...No work...The roots of what they´re doing now.

Teo Torriate (Let Us Cling Together) Most of these songs weren't hits. They're good compilations, but you couldn't label them "Greatest Hits."
GH III was a cash grab - they even had to pad it with solo songs. Having two completely different greatest hits albums was a mighty impressive feat, but swinging for the fences with a third one was a swing and a miss.

I think GH 3 was down to contact obligations to release something.
At the time both RT and BM used the Queen name to (possibly) increase their chances of reaching a wider audience for their own careers given the audience size that a Queen GH album could reach.

For sure. I just cannot realistically picture Brian and Roger drafting up that idea for a board meeting.
And little did they realize that in '99 their solo careers would more or less be put on hold for the next 20 years.

I loved some of the songs on it. I loved the artwork. But it still didn't feel right. IMO, a Hits III under the "Queen +" banner shouldn't have happened. I also echo that they did brilliantly to have TWO hits albums, with absolutely solid material on them as it was. But, with that said, there were some hits missing from the first two efforts, and there were definitely enough hits afterwards to make a third (if we can agree that a top 40 chart placing counts, and can also agree that this might mean one or two tracks that the die-hards might not like!) So, what would MY Queen Hits III be? If it was released tomorrow, purely as "Queen - Greatest Hits III" 1 - Under Pressure (Rah Mix) 2 - Tie Your Mother Down 3 - Spread Your Wings 4 - Heaven For Everyone 5 - Las Palabras De Amor 6 - Body Language *** 7 - You Don't Fool Me 8 - Back Chat 9 - Too Much Love Will Kill You 10 - Princes Of The Universe 11 - Scandal 12 - Let Me In Your Heart Again 13 - Let Me Live 14 - No-One But You 15 - These Are The Days Of Our Lives 16 - A Winter's Tale 17 - Thank God It's Christmas *** I know, Body Language is hated. BUT, it was a top-40 hit and also means the number of tracks is 17...in line with Hits and Hits II. Swap it with PISCTP if you want

If that's the case, why wasn't any RT solo songs on it? He had no solo hits... Nazis 1994 (#22) and Foreign Sand (#26) were both Top 30 hits, and that was their (arbitrary) qualification for inclusion on a Greatest Hits album.

Back Chat is in mine because it was a top 40 (as per my opening statement) whilst POTU charted top 40 in Australia and LMIYHA was top 40 throughout Europe. I forgot that FOTW is meant to be a double A with Killer Queen! That's a very good shout! I wouldn't have any Queen+ stuff in, hence George Michael is omitted.

Almost the MIH album would be there like IV of Led Zep on every Zeppelin compilation.

This is a cool thread, however GHIII just shouldn't have existed. I've made up two double disc versions of GHI and GHII, with the intentions of covering the whole catalogue. GHI (Queen - Flash Gordon) GHII (Hot Space - Made in Heaven). Because of this, not everything was a Single, but it provides the best outlook of Queen for me. Also decided to use some alternate versions in place of the Standard Stuff, thanks to CMI's Collection for that, mainly to provide a bit more variety compared to the standard album versions.
GHI
Disc 1: 1. We Will Rock You (Fast) (The BBC Session One) 2. Bohemian Rhapsody 3. Another One Bites the Dust 4. Killer Queen 5. Fat Bottomed Girls (Single Edit) 6. Bicycle Race (HD Mix from CMI's Collection) 7. You're My Best Friend 8. Don't Stop Me Now (Revisited...) 9. The March of the Black Queen (Deep Cuts Standalone) 10. Love of My Life (Stripped Down Mix from CMI) 11. Save Me (Original Single Mix) 12. Crazy Little Thing Called Love 13. Death On Two Legs (New Mix from CMI) 14. Spread Your Wings (Initial Pressing Version) 15. Dragon Attack 16. It's Late (New Edit from CMI) 17. Great King Rat (Preliminary Mix)
Disc 2: 1. Ogre Battle (Deep Cuts Standalone) 2. Somebody to Love 3. Now I'm Here 4. Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy (TOTP) 5. I'm in Love With My Car (Single Version) 6. Stone Cold Crazy 7. Keep Yourself Alive (Long-Lost Retake) 8. Liar 9. Play the Game 10. Flash (Single Version) 11. The Hero (Revisited...) (Works Better as a Standalone Version) 12. Brighton Rock 13. Tie Your Mother Down (HD Mix from CMI) 14. Seven Seas of Rhye 15. Teo Torriatte (HD Mix) 16. We Will Rock You 17. We Are the Champions
GHII
Disc 3: 1. A Kind of Magic (Long Version by CMI) 2. Under Pressure (Classic Queen Mix) 3. Radio Ga Ga (US Single Version) 4. Made in Heaven 5. I Want it All (Single Version) 6. I Want to Break Free (Single Mix) 7. Action This Day 8. Innuendo (Explosive Version, Cause Why Not?) 9. Put Out the Fire 10. It's a Hard Life 11. I Was Born to Love You (Alternate Outro from CMI without all the random stuff at the end) 12. Breakthru 13. These Are the Days of Our Lives 14. Scandal (Preliminary Mix) 15. Who Wants to Live Forever (7" Version) 16. Headlong 17. Too Much Love Will Kill You
Disc 4: 1. The Miracle (Alternate Outro from CMI) 2. I'm Going Slightly Mad 3. The Invisible Man (Alternate Intro from CMI) 4. Heaven for Everyone (Single Version) 5. Body Language 6. Hammer to Fall (Single Edit) 7. Back Chat (Single Remix) 8. Staying Power 9. Tear It Up 10. Friends Will Be Friends 11. Is This the World We Created...? 12. Las Palabras De Amor 13. Princes of the Universe 14. It's a Beautiful Day (Single Version) 15. No-One But You 16. The Show Must Go On 17. One Vision (Single Version)
GHI has a bit more variety because that's what happens when you create a Greatest Hits album from 9 albums instead of 6, which made doubling GHII a bit more complicated. But I'm happy with these, and hence, no need for this GHIII thing. It doesn't exist in my eyes. I've also tried to start and end each disc effectively as well. Eg. Ending Disc 1 with the Drum Roll Fade Out of Great King Rat, and then opening Disc 2 with the swirly fade in of Ogre Battle.
Here's how many songs come from each album: Queen: 3 Queen II: 3 Sheer Heart Attack: 4 A Night at the Opera: 5 A Day at the Races: 3 News of the World: 4 Jazz: 3 The Game: 5 Flash Gordon: 2 Hot Space: 7 (lol) The Works: 6 A Kind of Magic: 5 The Miracle: 5 Innuendo: 5 Made in Heaven: 5 Non-Album: 2
