Is it just me, or is the bass turned way down low in Don't Try So Hard? I have to wear headphones to pick it out. I'm listening to the 2011 remaster.

John is alive, someone just go ask him. A 2021 interview with JD would be my ultimate fan dream. Would it? Not to be too dismissive, but I can't really see it being of much interest. 😄 "What did you do today, John?" "Well, I did the dishes, took a bit of a stroll round the block to get me fags, took the dog out..." I don't know if he's got a dog but I doubt that his life today would be of very much interest to anyone but himself. That's not being rude, that's just acknowledging that his private life is now what it is. Even if he was interviewed about his time with Queen, I can't really see him dishing up anything particularly earth shattering, that hasn't been said before, although I guess he could clarify whether or not he played on Innuendo. Out of curiosity, what would you ask him? 🙂

Regardless, that was 16 years ago. yeah of course, honestly I see pretty much 0 chance of john ever doing an interview, though it's still quite interesting seeing how john wasn't completely out of the public eye up to the early 2000s, e.g. his last letter to the fan club was in 1999, one of the many reasons why 'john retired in 1997' never made sense to me. Sure bejart ballet was in 97 but no one but you came out as a single in 98, and so did GH3, though that might have been in 99, not sure

I'd be fascinated to know his thoughts about QPR and QAL, did he ever see them live, did he really say that Queen + Robbie Williams was "rubbish", did he actually feel very close to Freddie, why is he no longer in touch with Brian and Roger, etc.
But I know there's almost zero chance he would ever get to answer thoses questions...

He didn't say Q+ Robbie was rubbish necessarily, he just said he was glad he wasn't involved which I find quite funny. As for Q+AL I'm sure he'd be fine with it, as he seemed to be generally supportive of the collaboration with Paul Rodgers. And anyways, if he really hated it I'm sure he could probably stop it, Queen is as much his as it is to the 2/3rds of smile

I think an article about him visiting the remixer in the studio while he was working on it is somewhere up on the official Queen site.

It's probably one of the most common myths going around.

What is the last known credit from John? He wasn't involved with the 2001 WATC version at all IIRC, it must have been before that. I can't think of anything after that where he might have been involved with, as that was around the time when Brian and Roger went full Queen+.

I mean I guess an 'official' retirement date for john would be 1999, as GH3 cane out that year and he sent a final letter to the official fanclub talking about a 1981 performance they did kf we will rock you that he saw on the telly. Not sure which show it was, but apparently freddie was wearing shorts

Fascinating, thanks! Who knows maybe John decided to retire BECAUSE Brian's 'rah mix' was selected for GH3 instead of the Mike Spencer remix John had been supporting... a few years after Brian had chose to discard John & Roger's original work for MIH !?

I wouldn't know as the only queen song I have listened to since 2011 Monday is delilah. Every single day I wake up and put on my homemade CD of delilah, infact one time I met brian and got him to sign my guitar solo of delilah. It is the only good queen song and I think there should be a tour where they just perform delilah nonstop for an hour, I would go feral and jump on stage and meow so brian can take a rest during the solos. Not sure where I was going with this

I believe that he played on Innuendo, the sound signature and playing is John. In 2017 there was a master tapes playing in the studio for the fans. Somewhere there is a thread about that.

Where can we hear the Mike Spencer mix? Is it on YT or in CMI's collection? Unsure if it's the same as the Classic Queen remix

I am obsessed with those tapes, they played early versions of Innuendo including Roger's guide vocal version and also Roger's demo of TATTOOL that was indeed very different at those early stages. Unfortunately no recordings have surfaced and security was tight regarding recording devices for what I could read. I doubt that something could be captured from that event.

Can we believe anything in that Sun article though ? This one seems unlikely to be true, but then again ... "The bassist made his cutting comments at the Save Popbitch party - an event to raise money for the internet gossip site. I was surprised to see him at the bash because he hasn't appeared on the London party scene for years." ... Really ?

Really ?  He did frequent strip clubs, which I recall caught a lot of Queen fans off-guard at the time, so anything’s possible I guess.

He was (and possibly still is) involved with Popbitch and definitely attended that party. That much I know for certain. Whether or not the quote about Robbie Williams was said, I don't know.

While I'm sure it's not, as i never remember him writing this.... It sounds so much like on of Fatty's fantasies that i have to ask.... Is it from one of his Queenzone threads?

Fortunately that digipack single isn't too hard to come by, but it's a shame the song is not more widely available. IMHO, the Mike Spencer Mix of Under Pressure is the textbook example of a remix done right. It's literally the only remix that I can think of from the top of my head (Queen or otherwise) that may be better than the original mix.
