This live appearence has always had my attention.
John joined the SAS Band on 1st July 1995 at the Shepherds Bush Empire.
Was it a charity gig? Why would the SAS Band play such a big venue for their value? No offense, but they are just a cover band.
What a strange list of songs they had John at:
My Girl 634-5789 Crazy Little Thing Called Love
There are no pics, no audio, no video. Only an article in a OIQFC mag and a pic of John with a young fan from that night. If it wasnβt for Jacky we would have probably never knew about this event.
Yet more strange that it was John on his own. It would make a little bit of more sense if Roger (mainly) or Brian were there too.

maybe Roger or Brian were gonna be there as well and bailed at the last minute.
Also I wonder if this is what led to Roger and John joining the SAS band for the cover of That's The Way God Planned It

I was at that gig and got introduced to Deaky at the bar beforehand. The bar was in the middle of the ground floor just behind where the audience stood. I also remember standing next to Jamie watching the support band. Perhaps I'd had one ot two too many sherbets before getting there but it was very civilised meeting. Nothing exciting was said by JD just hi and I mentioned I'd seen his son's band earlier that month. As far as I know neither of the other two were scheduled to appear . I think JD only agreed to appear because his son's band were the support act.
Just those three songs and away he went into the night.

Or perhaps Henry James knows something about this.

Back into the fan club mags while I have them out.. Summer '95.
"John had previously attended one of the SAS band's gigs at the Bottomline club also in Shepherd's bush (one for the "Queen attending concerts' thread there) and had enjoyed them enough to agree to play with them - as long as he could choose the vocalist and the song! He chose Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet and Chirs Thompson..."
That seems pretty clear to me tbh. As to how the band played such a big venue, I think the clue is in the title - "All Star" - it's the big name guests who attract the audiences. No idea who else was on that particular evening though.

Iβd love to hear him playing β634-5789ββ¦his playing in that style on βThe Letterβ at the 1988 Princes Trust concert is superb. If he thought Queen had run itβs course after 1991 (or 1995) then I wish heβd joined/formed a little Motown style band - that wouldβve been great!
