Morning all. First thread (be gentle!)...
I've searched but couldn't find any other mention of this so apologies if it's already been covered but for those with appropriate equipment there are five tracks from Greatest Hits streaming in Dolby Atmos surround on both Apple Music and Tidal:
Bo Rhap You're My Best Friend Crazy Little Thing Called Love Play The Game Another One Bites The Dust
I've seen people mention other tracks that have been converted too (e.g. Flash! and Fat Bottomed Girls) but they don't appear to be available in the UK (yet).
Not had a chance to do a comparison with previous 5.1 mixes yet but they do sound great and the fact that these exist at all seems promising - wonder if they're going to do the entire album, and hopefully GHV2 seeing as surround mixes were created for for the DVDs.
It's always bugged me that the surroundifying of the catalogue ground to a halt - if ever there was a band ripe for surround sound...

I wonder if it's a coincidence that all those tracks were previously available in 5.1 surround on DVD-A?

The Flash theme and Fat Bottomed Girls sound new though? Awesome if it's true

So we have ANATO and The Game with previous 5.1 mixes but also there are surround mixes available for everything on Greatest Video Hits 1 and 2 (am I right in thinking that there never was a Video Hits 3?) so that would cover off both Flash and FBG and would also open up the possibility of further surround mixes for singles right up to The Miracle.
I've got a 6 month trial going on Apple Music specifically because they've recently opened up a Dolby Atmos section (or Spatial Audio as Apple call it because seemingly they have to put some random fancy name on everything...) and literally stumbled across the five mixes above a couple of weeks ago. Sadly, Apple's interface gives out pretty much no metadata so I've no idea who created these new mixes. Could have been an algorithm for all I know but would Brian have allowed that? Does he even know they exist in what is essentially the audio equivalent of 3D?
Anyway, I'm still trying to find out whether the other tracks mentioned (Flash, FBG) do actually exist as Atmos mixes - need to play around with VPNs and such like but happy to report back if I find anything else out :-)

New? That would involve QPL doing some actual work. Call me cynical, but you know, DECADES of being a fan....

Extrapolating "they're going to do..." anything is a mug's game, I'm afraid.
For example, an "Off the record" full band tab book of the first album came out randomly in about 1994. There was no fanfare, no anniversary, no nothing. I spent months going back to music stores checking for Queen II to follow it, or indeed any other album. Never happened

Happened to play “The Game” via AppleTV on home theatre today and was taken aback when “Play The Game” started. It’s so different. Then remembered this thread and the 5 songs that is now “spatial” in Apple Music.
I must admit, with 3 songs from “The Game” with this feature, it’s quite jarring listening to the album as these tracks are so different.
Do we know if and when more Queen tracks will go this route?
I’m off to listen to Abbey Road in spatial now.

I would kill for Queen II in Surround, just imagine The March Of The Black Queen or Father To Son

I would kill for Queen II in Surround, just imagine The March Of The Black Queen or Father To Son There is so much going on in this album, even the 2011 remaster is still muddy. Imagine the clarity if they went back to the multi's and did a surround mix. Brian touted it back in 2005 in his eulogy for Mike Stone saying <Queen> were planning to ask Mike back to mix it in surround....

All this music in Dolby Atmos is unreal ... To experience TRUE Dolby Atmos you should have adequate equipment, with physical speakers everywhere ... With headphones, the Atmos sounds like the old binaural technique ... just import a track into a daw software with a binaural plugin and ... here we are with the "atmos experience" .. Honestly I'm so skeptical when I hear those things ... Maybe I'm wrong and I'm ready to change my point of view if someone explains it to me well but at the moment I trust my ears. I prefer a 5.1 remix (approved by the group) of some albums like Queen II, Innuendo or the entire catalogue The other fake upmix or encoded stuff is just rubbish to me.

I have a surround sound system with Dolby Atmos. I played 'The Game' 5.1 DVD that Queen released and then compared them to the 3 Apple Music tracks. The 3 Apple Music tracks in Dolby Atmos sound superior to the previous mixes from the DVD. For example, on "Play The Game," Fred's vocals sit right in front of you as the synthesizers bounce around, the drums echo and the guitar rips. I've heard bits of vocals from Fred I've never heard previously.
Edit: as an additional note, I listened to the same tracks on my iPhone via regular headphones (with Dolby Atmos set to "always on" on the device) and the results were a little underwhelming. I don't have specific Apple Airbuds that support Spatial Audio, that is supposed to be better.

The Beatles and KISS are the only artists that I have experience with, but I've been crossing my fingers for Queen to get into this. It's the only way they'll get me to buy any new digital format,...I think

Youtube videos are encoded in stereo, so at best you were just listening to a binaural downmix of the "proper" multichannel audio.

For comparison: I have the 5.1 DVDs of The Game and Opera, which I play thru a high end surround Bose system. I have the Dolby Atmos/Spatial Audio mixes via Apple Music, which I listen to with the Apple AirPods Max headphones.
I’ve only had a few listens to the Dolby Atmos/Spatial Audio mixes and am finding them as enjoyable as the 5.1 mixes, but not noticeably different. As is the case with many older tracks the spatial audio is closer to a 5.1 surround(ish) mix but playable thru headphones.
In contrast some albums have been specifically mixed for this new audio format. I listened to the new mix of The Beatles Let It Be and Abbey Road. Both albums sounded so good I was sucked in to the music and totally absorbed. It’s weird feeling, waking up at the end of an album and realising you were awake all along. You were just so engrossed in the sound.
One thing to note is the new Apple headphones have in built accelerometers so the headphones can sense your head movements and adjust the sound accordingly. In some cases the surround sound is like being in a room of musicians, and as you move your head you might hear an instrument shift a bit. It’s hard to explain until you sense it, but it’s very immersive.
I can say I can hear Deacy with better clarity in the tracks.
Queen embraced 5.1. Probably because it is a showcase for their music and particularly their harmonies. With this in mind I can see the albums embracing this new format and to wow new and old fans alike.

Yep, it's a pre-spatial audio, all surround content with spatial audio playing in stereo speakers are just downmixed to stereo with a binaural technique or basically how spatial audio works. The other channels are just decoded with a binaural technique rather than not decoding them with a help of spatial audio. I've heard Queen in 5.1 using a headphones with a Dolby Atmos for headphones spatial audio in Windows 10 and it just sounds the same to Apple's Dolby Atmos but it's just equalized.

I know YouTube recently introduced the option to upload videos with 5.1 surround, so you can properly upload those mixes now. www.androidheadlines.com/2021/08/dolby-digital-5-1-surround-sound-youtube-tv

Actually, that feature is only for YouTube TV, so the movies/series streaming there can have surround, but YouTube itself currently does not support it.

I guess I didn't pay attention to that part for some reason. But believe or not, YouTube itself does indeed support it. This trailer I found that's in 5.1, for example: If I were to download it and put it in Audacity, it will actually give me all the channels, separated: I'm kinda surprised nobody has said it works on normal YouTube. I at least hope I cleared that up for you.
