It's always been mentioned that The Cross albums and tours sold better in Germany, and other countries in continental Europe, which resulted in them not touring or having any promotion at all in Britain after the Shove It album and tour (which of course led to Blue Rock not even being released in the UK). Is there any evidence to back this up? Did their albums and singles chart at all in any other European countries? And how well attended was the Mad Bad tour in particular (as the Blue Rock tour was as a support act so different dynamics)? The Geneva concerts seems near enough empty! I've always wondered how popular they ever got because they were basically ignored in the UK after the initial promotional push for Shove It

You've missed out an additional factor- record companies.
Virgin didn't want a second album, Parlophone wouldn't support a UK tour for the second album and then refused to release the third, leaving them with only a German record label, whose own support was waning if all they could sort out was a support slot with Magnum.

So they signed with Parlophone knowing there wouldn't be a UK tour on, I assume, a one album deal? Were the UK dates for the Shove It tour not well attended then? Unfortunately I was too young to go as all the venues were over 18s only. When Mad Bad was released I don't remember any promotion at all, and only one review (Teletext or Ceefax. I forget which), even though they obviously spent a few quid on the Power To Love video!
