There are lots of topics about Freddies voice during Magic Tour and comparisons between the concerts.
I started to wonder, if someone has done same to Brians guitar solo. The Wembley 2nd night is maybe not the best concert during that tour (not even near..), but the solo there is perfect. No bummer notes, no breaks or broken strings. It just sounds so perfect and structured. Is there any other nights on Magic Tour, when he was even nearly as good? Or was it just a lucky strike that he happened to play a flawless version of it on that saturday show, which was recorded and released officially?

I think Brian’s solo in Mannheim is superior to Wembley. There are even bits of ‘Golden Days’ included.

Can I be the bad person I am? I can't stand Brian's solo. Too long, too phoned... It could last half, and be interesting...
Now kill me ahahah

I prefer Brian's solos 1981 and prior.

Though technically his solos are brilliant, I think they're quite boring, or at the very least too long. The one thing they seem to miss enough of is melody, which is odd because within the format of a Queen song he almost always comes up with a brilliant melody that is just as memorable as any chorus. Think of Killer Queen, Best Friend, Bo Rhap, etc. But when left to improvise or rather play with things he's already improvised (with no rhythm section) it just seems to meander with a more or less vague direction. Again, what he's doing is technically superb. Not trying to overlook that. On the contrary, when infused Last Horizon or Bijou he's on fire. His strength is producing amazing melodies. Wish he'd do more of that.

Definitely the 2nd night at Wembley is my fave version of BRS. Also, Last Horizon was awesome at Sheffield (Return Of The Champions).

Having listened to the entire Magic tour once upon a time (minus the one show we don't have obviously) without a doubt the second night at Wembley was something magical.
Brian is first and foremost a creature of structure. He's not Keith Jarrett and has no ambitions to be, but that solo at Wembley is a fantastic example of his spontaneity and structure meeting head on. He was in his state of flow, and this remains such a marvellous listen.

Now kill me ahahah It's quite boring to listen and watch through your screen but remember that live concert is really different meaning that it's probably 100 times louder not at Wembley it wasn't. i was there. outdoor gigs always sound "quieter" than indoor ones. a lot of sound gets carried on the breeze.

At Slane Brian played a nice gentle rendition of "Danny Boy" during the solo, the subtlety of which was wasted on the boisterous audience, I fear. Ok it's a bit corny, sort of music-hall Irish, but at least he bothered.

I first heard Brighton Rock on Live Killers before I bought their other albums. What a fond memory of a wicked performance.

I kinda like Knebworth's solo the best, it has the little bit of Chinese Torture and the other licks are masterfully done by Brian... Wembley's 2nd night is good too.

To be honest, I don't like the Magic Tour solos at all. Especially the one from Wembley 2nd night is too long and really boring, missing vitality. I like solos offering a pretty melody (like Last Horizon) or which impress the audience with technical skills (speed). Brians solos of the 70s were much more vital, sometimes joined by Roger and John. He could at least make the effort and include some nice guitar solos from the Kind of Magic album like POTU or GTP. That would have been a pleasant surprise!
By the way, I really like the structure of the Magic shows: make them deaf and blind with OV and TYMD, play a medley and some well known songs afterwards. Play some quite stuff (solo, LOML, ITTWWC) and then build up to the next climax (BR). After that a great final like Live Aid with beautiful and long jam sessions. The first 40 minutes (OV to IWTBF) and the last 40 minutes (Tutti Frutti to end) are really brilliant! Only inbetween I see some room for improvement: they should have included '39 and another Queen song, and Brian should have played a shorter solo including some vital melodies from the new album!

Just watched Odeon '75 an hour ago and it was a real joy to listen to Brian's solo: perfect length, starting very powerfull and fast. Much more impressive than the longer and longer solos in the years after. Especially the Wembley 2nd night solo is way too long and much too boring.

The second night's solo at Wembley is all the more remarkable when you consider how bad the first night's solo was.
It's odd that all the Magic tour releases refer to it as 'Brighton Rock Solo'. By 1986 there doesn't seem to be any parts from the original Brighton Rock solo left in it (as heard on Sheer Heart Attack). They didn't even go into the ending of Brighton Rock like they did on the Works tour. It's noticeable that the Milton Keynes 1982 release simply refers to it as 'Guitar Solo'.

I was thinking something very similar myself recently about the strategic nature of the Magic setlist: New opener: One Vision A few oldies: Tie Your Mother Down, In The Lap Of The Gods (Revisited), Seven Seas Of Rhye, Liar (snippet) Selection of 80s hits/album tracks: Tear It Up, A Kind Of Magic, Under Pressure, Another One Bites The Dust, Who Wants To Live Forever, I Want To Break Free A couple more oldies: Now I'm Here, Love Of My Life Songs played at Live Aid + current single: Is This The World We Created, Bohemian Rhapsody, Hammer To Fall, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Radio Ga Ga, We Will Rock You, Friends Will Be Friends, We Are The Champions As you mention it's a very strong opening and closing 40 minutes. But the show for me takes a huge dip in the middle with the amount of 'farting about' - the 'Impromptu', Brian's long solo, the amount of (IMO unnecessary) covers (5 at Wembley!). This was time that they could have spent playing more Queen songs, although I appreciate that Freddie needed a rest. Had I been there I would also have been very disappointed to see the acoustic guitars and tambourine come out and then NOT hear '39, even though it had been dropped in 1980.
