Hi everybody.
The two members of Queen who have appeared in multiple projects by other artists over the years have been Brian and Roger; Freddie and John have participated in other projects, but to a very limited extent. Here are a list of Roger's collaborations with other artists.
As a musician:
1) 1973: "I Can Hear Music / Goin' Back" single by Larry Lurex.
Roger Taylor and Brian May both played on these two songs by Larry Lurex, Freddie's pseudonym for this release. The two musicians played drums and guitar respectivetely on side A, while . The single was released in the UK by EMI Records in June 1973, a month before Queen's debut album.
2) 1973: "Past and Present" album by Al Stewart.
Recorded at Trident Studios in London in April 1973 with John Anthony producing; Roger played percussion in some tracks of the album. Released in the UK in October 1973.
3) 1975: "Tails Of Illusion" album by Fox.
Roger sang backing vocals in the song "Survival".
4) 1975: "Dangerous" album by Eugene Wallace.
Roger was credited as backing vocalist is some tracks of the album, released in 1975.
5) 1976: "All American Alien Boy" album by Ian Hunter.
Ian Hunter of Mott The Hoople invited Queen to join in his solo album: Freddie, Brian and Roger recorded backing vocals for the song "You Nearly Did Me In" at Electric Lady Studios in New York City on 9th February 1976 (they were there on tour at the time).
6) 1980: "How Come You're So Dumb? / Rich Kid Blues" single by Hilary Hilary.
Roger Taylor was the man behind this single: he wrote the lyrics (co-wrote the A side with the singer Hilary Vance) and the arrangements, he played guitar, bass, drums and keyborads and sang backing vocals in these two tracks. Released in the UK only by Mainly Modern Records in 1980.
7) 1981: "Mel Smith's Greatest Hits" album by Mel Smith.
Roger played all instruments and produced the songs "Mel Smith's Greatest Hits" and "Richard And Joey".
8) 1981: "Dance" album by Gary Numan.
Roger played drums in three songs of the album, "Crash", "You Are Here" and "Moral". Released in September 1981.
9) 1982: "Vinyl Confessions" album by Kansas.
Taylor made an appearance as a backing vocalist in three tracks: "Play The Game Tonight", "Right Away" and "Diamonds And Pearls". Released in June 1982.
10) 1982: "Emotions In Motion" by Billy Squier.
Roger and Freddie sang backing vocals on the song "Emotions In Motion", recorded at Musicland Studios in Munich in the same period of Queen's "Hot Space". The album, produced by Mack, was released on 23rd July 1982 by Capitol Records.
11) 1983: "Star Fleet Project" album by Brian May + Friends.
In April 1983, Roger joined Brian at Record Plant in Los Angeles and sang backing vocals on the song "Star Fleet". The album was released in late October 1983.
12) 1984: "Love Kills" single by Freddie Mercury.
For many years, no one knew the real identity of the musicians featured in the first single released under the name of Freddie Mercury. In fact, they were Brian, Roger and John, who played guitar, electronic drums and rhythm guitar respectivetely. They are not credited in the single, which was released in the UK on 10th September 1984.
13) 1985: "Take It Or Leave It" album by Jimmy Nail.
Roger played drums and synthetizer in the song "Love Don’t Live Here Anymore", which was produced by him and David Richards.
14) 1985: "Bursting At The Seams" single by Camy Todorow.
Roger played drums, remixed and produced the song with David Richards at Mountain Studios in Montreux.
15) 1985: "Ice On Fire" album by Elton John.
Roger Taylor was invited to play on this Elton's album; he played drums on the song "Too Young", in which John Deacon played bass. The album was released in the UK by The Rocket Record Company on 4th November 1985.
16) 1985: "Loving You" single by Feargal Sharkey.
Roger played drums and produced the song with David Richards at Mountain Studios in Montreux.
17) 1985: "Persuader" album by Debbie Byrne.
Taylor played drums in the song "Fools Rush In".
18) 1985: "Under A Raging Moon" album by Roger Daltrey.
Roger was one of the drummers who played in the song "Under A Raging Moon", a tribute to drummer Keith Moon; the others were Martin Chambers, Cozy Powell, Stewart Copeland, Zak Starkey, Carl Palmer and Mark Brzezicki. Released by Atlantic in September 1985.
19) 1986: "Vigilante" album by Magnum.
Roger produced the album and sang backing vocals in the songs "When The World Comes Down" e "Sometime Love". Released on 26th September 1986.
20) 1986: "Leather Jackets" album by Elton John.
In early 1986, Taylor was invited again to perform on a Elton John's record; along with John Deacon on bass, he played drums in the song "Angeline". The album was released in the UK by The Rocket Record Company on 15th October 1986.
21) 1987: "The Great Pretender" single by Freddie Mercury.
Roger Taylor joined his bandmate Freddie Mercury in his solo single, singing backing vocals with him and Peter Straker; he also joined in the music video of the song. The single was released on 23rd February 1987.
22) 1989: "Who Wants To Live Forever" single by Ian Meeson & Belinda Gillett.
In 1989, Brian May decided to record a cover version of the Queen song "Who Wants To Live Forever" to rise money for The British Bone Marrow Donor Appeal, founded by Denise Morse before her death from leukaemia. This version of the song was performed by two kids, Ian Meeson & Belinda Gillett; Brian played guitar and keyboards and produced the track, while Roger and John played drums and bass respectivetely. Michael Kamen, who arranged the Queen version in 1986, took the role again. The single was released in the UK by Parlophone in August 1989.
23) 1989: "Smoke On The Water" single by Rock Aid Armenia.
Roger played the drums in the new version of this Deep Purple's song, recorded at Olympic Studios in London on 8th July 1989; other musicians included Ian Gillan, Brian May, Tony Iommi and David Gilmour. The single was released in December 1989 to raise funds for Armenia.
24) 1991: "The Stonk" single by Hale and Pace and the Stonkers.
Taylor played drums on this benefit single for Comic Relief alongside Cozy Powell and Rowan Atkinson; Brian May produced the whole thing (as well as playing guitar and keyboards) with Steve Parr. Released in 1991.
25) 1992: "The Epic Years" album by Shakin’ Stevens.
Roger's drums can be heard in the song "Radio".
26) 1997:"SAS Band" album by SAS Band.
Roger Taylor joined Spike Edney's SAS Band on his debut album: he played drums (together with Charlie Morgan) and sang some lead and backing vocals on the cover of Billy Preston's 1969 track "That’s The Way God Planned It"; John Deacon also played bass. The album was released by Bridge Recordings in 1997.
27) 2001: "Sex, Age & Death" album by Bob Geldof.
Taylor played drums on the album; he also sang backing vocals in some tracks.
28) 2003: "Cherie" album by Cherie.
Drums in the song "Say You Love Me".
29) 2010: "Red Light Fever" album by Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders.
Roger joined Taylor Hawkins' band singing backing vocals on "Your Shoes". The album was released on 20th April 2010.
30) 2014: "Do They Know Its Christmas?" single by Band Aid 30.
Thirty years after the original recording, Band Aid rejoined to record a new version of the song "Do They Know Its Christmas?": in this new line-up, Roger was also included. he played drums and performed backing vocals on the track. Released on 8th Deecember 2014.
31) 2014: "Solitary" movie soundtrack (directed by Sasha Krane).
Work on the film "Solitary" began on 30th September 2013: among the actors in the cast were Sarina Potgieter (Roger's wife), Anita Dobson (Brian's wife) and Felix Taylor (the eldest son of Roger and Dominique Beyrand). Roger Taylor was the composer of the music for the film: he began working on it in March 2014 with producer Joshua J. Macrae in his private studios in Cosford Mill. Among the songs used for the film was the unreleased "Moon Runners" (written and performed with Felix and Lola Daisy May Taylor - Roger's eldest children from his first marriage), "One Night Stand", "Drummer In A Rock 'N Roll Band" and "Quality Street" (these last three songs were already released on "Fun On Earth" album in 2013) and "The Key" (from the 1994 album "Happiness"). The film had its world premiere in California on 7th January 2015 and released worldwide on the iTunes, Amazon and IndieFlix platforms from 1st November 2016. The soundtrack was not released separately.
32) 2015: "Absolutely Anything" opening credits (directed by Terry Jones).
On 14th August 2015, the new film by Terry Jones, entitled "Absolutely Anything", was released in British cinemas; among the cast, in addition to Simon Pegg and Kate Beckinsale, there were also Robbie Williams in the role of the dog Dennis (it was his last role in a film) and the complete Monty Python (John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin and Terry Jones himself) in the role of aliens. The song used for the opening credits of the film, titled “Absolutely Anything,” was written and played by Roger Taylor and mixed and produced by Joshua J. Macrae; it was probably recorded during the recording sessions of Taylor's solo album "Fun On Earth", released on 11th November 2013. Currently, it has not yet been officially released.
33) 2019: "Holy Man" by Dennis Wilson, Taylor Hawkins, Brian May, Roger Taylor.
On the occasion of 'Record Store Day 2019', Taylor Hawkins re-released a cover of the song "Holy Man", originally written and performed by Dennis Wilson; Hawkins had already released a cover of the song in 2008 with lyrics written by Gregg Jakobson, Wilson's lyricist. The new version of the song included the piano line recorded by Wilson in 1977, a new vocal track by Hawkins, a new guitar line written and performed by Brian May (recorded with the help of Justin Shirley-Smith and Kris Friedriksson) and a new drum backing track played by Roger Taylor (recorded by Joshua J. Macrae). May and Taylor also recorded all the backing vocals. Released on a limited edition single on 13th April 2019.
34) 2019: "Get The Money" album by Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders.
Queen's drummer sang lead vocals on "Shapes Of Things" and was credited as a composer with Hawkins, Chris Chaney, Pat Smear, Steve Jones, Gannin Arnold and John Lousteau. The album was released on 8th November 2019.
35) 2021: "Insolo" album by Gary Kemp.
Roger played drums in the song "Too Much". The album was released by Columbia/Sony on 16th July 2021.
As a producer:
1) 1975: together with Queen, Roger produced a recording session with a band called Trax. Nothing was released.
2) 1985: unreleased album by Sideways Look.
In early 1985, Roger Taylor and David Richards produced some songs for the second album of Sideways Look, a Scottish band. Among the songs recorded there was a cover of "Bullet Proof Heart" by Fingerprintz, originally released in 1980; The Official Queen Fan Club Magazine reported at the time that the song would be released as a single in the UK on 9 April 1985 but, due to artistic differences between the band and Virgin Records (who had the band under contract), all the material recorded under Taylor and Richards' production remained unreleased. Sideway Look released their second album "Taming The Blade" in 1988 with Blue Flamingo Records, without any input from Roger or David.
3) 1986: "Virginia Wolf" album by Virginia Wolf.
Roger Taylor and David Richards produced the debut album of the band, released in 1986.
4) 1989: "Dancerama" by Sigue Sigue Sputnik.
Roger remixed the track for the single release, which happened on 13th March 1989.
