Queen II ANATO Live Killers Made In Heaven ...I've never been one to follow rules. You couldn't pay me enough to eliminate one of these four albums from my diet. I cannot possibly quantify how important they all are to me. I hear you, but mate, you have to. One of these albums has to go. Which is it? I mean I physically wept watching "Hot Space" smoulder away, knowing I would never hear it again.

For a start, it was a shit film! 😁 Secondly, I never saw it as a 'proper' album, just bits and pieces with the film dialogue interspersed. What I wanted from my favourite band at that point was a full on rock album. I could have forgiven them FG as a bit of a side project, but then along came Hot F**king Space, and that just put the tin hat on their rock band status at that time, as far as I was concerned.

The Game - my real-time reaction: "oh f**k, some of this stuff is awful, i hope this is a blip" Flash Gordon - my real-time reaction: "it's not as bad as the last one, but when will they record an LP of songs, rather than incidental music?" Hot Space - my real-time reaction: "oh for the love of f**kdom, God no, please stop" Works - my real-time reaction: "it sounds like Queen, but it's too poppy and far too electronic" Magic - my real-time reaction: "I'm out"

If the world is blowing up I probably won't have time to listen to them anyway ! haha. and even if the Extinction Countdown gave you time to listen to ALL four, you'd probably find some smart-bollox-p*ss-taking-c*nt has had the last laugh by swapping the contents...you take each carefully out of their respective sleeves to find that: A Kind Of Magic now residing in Queen II's sleeve Hot Space secreted inside ANATO's jacket Live Magic (original pressing) inside Live Killers' wrapper and The Works hiding within Made In Heaven's outer cover. happy "end of days", in-fucking-deed. just think, the last sound you ever hear could be: "Dancer, dancer - Bring out the funk and dance the night away - Dancer, dancer" - think I'd rather instant evaporation than ever hear that again.

Like I said earlier though, I and many other fans were able to listen to everything all at once. And while older fans had to endure a long period of time of poppier 80s tunes, younger fans just see a band who have so much varied music to their name. It's all a matter of perspective. But I will agree that Hot Space was a VERY questionable move. It was a huge blunder for a band that was otherwise still growing and on top of the world. I still think the 80s has some wonderful moments. I'm particularly proud of Flash Gordon and A Kind Of Magic. To be associated with two cult films with music as memorable as Flash and Who Wants To Live Forever? Man that's cool.

Yes, it was great being around from the beginning to see them grow (as with many other bands and artists), but it also meant I was seeing them, as I perceived at the time, changing into something I wasn't so ready to accept.

Sheer Heart Attack - Because it's my favourite album. It has all kind of flavors, has a solid medley, Queen's creative pinnacle, the best vocal harmonies and guitar work, very clever compositions, the band was fresh, full of energy and so far it only has one song that I can't stand (She Makes Me ) and one 'meh' track (Misfire - sorry John, I know you're reading this, but hey, you did really improve from ANATO on!) A Day At The Races - I specially love Roger's drums. It's similar to ANATO but very different at the same time. I love every single track on this record and the band could really prove that "Bohemian Rhapsody" was not meant to be a one-hit wonder. This is probably the last album they've made with such complex compositions full of the classic and iconic Queen sound (full of harmonies, the Red Special, etc). NOTW was much more simple of course, and then except for a few songs on the subsequent records, the band would never made such an album like this again. The Miracle - Even with the band being now mature and after almost 20 years together, they still delivered an excellent album (except for My Baby Does Me and Rain Must Fall) and Freddie's vocals were still on top (well, they actually never ceased to be). They were still rocking, creating new sounds and I specially love the first three tracks. I also have deep nostalgic feelings about it because this was released around the time that I began listening to the band, at 10, and I remember watching "The Miracle Express" TV special and the video clips on cable music TV stations with great attention, long before internet hit the world. You just had to catch them! As for solo albums I'd pick: Back To The Light (One of my Top 10 albums ever - I love it and AW is very very poor IMHO) Fun In Space (I just can't explain how much I love this one - I'm obsessed about it) The FM Album (It has a great selection of Freddie tracks and I prefer the versions on this release rather than the originals, specially Mr Bad Guy)

Queen II - just love this whole album ADATR - I need to listen to my all-time favorite track You Take My Breath Away every now and then ANATO - Maybe The Prophet's Song will stop the earth from burning...

We DO know GHs won´t be melted...QPL would re-re-re-re-release them so many times that it won´t be impossible to delete them...

By the way, anyone who didn't explain their reasons for their three albums doesn't get to keep any. Sorry, I don't make the rules. On a serious (well not actually but you know) point, I'm genuinely interested in the "only three Queen albums" question... which is very different to the "my top three Queen albums" question. (Besides "list threads" should all be literally consumed with fire, they are boring and rubbish to read.) Nowadays we can stream anything and keep it all in your pocket and blah blah yes very clever. But what I'm getting at is, if you could only listen to three Queen albums ever again, what are they? This is why the "why" is so important. Do you pick what you think of as the "best", or just the three you are fondest of? Do you hedge your bets by keeping a live album with lots of big hits/favourites, or consign the big hitters to the flames and stick with complete albums? Is it a matter of taste or nostalgia? What are you prepared (or glad) to sacrifice? My top three are definitely not my "world is burning" three. Anyway I've enjoyed everyone's takes so far.

Since oreno's comment just above was posted only 2 hours ago, I'm going to argue that that gives me enough time to explain the reasons for my choices now, before the burning flames wreak their havok:
1. Sheer Heart Attack - It's my favourite Queen album. From the music to the arrangements to the lyrics, it's a cutting edge aural experience for me with each and every listen. 2. Queen II - It's my 2nd favourite Queen album. People often cite Bohemian Rhapsody as the crown jewel in their repertoire, but for me there are at least 4 songs on this album which surpass it. 3. A Day at the Races - It's my 3rd favourite Queen album. Often considered the 'poor sister' companion to the album that preeceeded it, in my view this album is far superior overall.

A Day At The Races My favourite album, arguably the best sound, vocals and songwriting of any Queen album.
A Night At The Opera My first Queen album and still one of my favourites.
Made In Heaven Not a song on it I don't like or ever feel like skipping. I may be the only person to always listen to "13" in entirety! The perfect last album by Queen and probably for anyone.
---
It's already been mentioned but if I was to choose albums not by Queen then it would be...
Revolver My favourite Beatles album, every song is great. Although can't pick a favourite song easily!
Rumours A great album, contains some of the first "old" songs I ever heard - The Chain and Don't Stop I knew before most Queen songs.
Who's Next Not a song on it I don't like but also contains Baba O'Riley, enough said!

Queen II . Just love this album A Day At The Races. Great sounding equally as good as it predecessor. Jazz. Some bad production choices, maybe, but contains some great playing from Roger and Brian.

Some of Roger's best drum fills are on this album, and I'm not just talking about Fat Bottomed Girls. Roger's toms don't bother me so much as the snare drum sound. You can barely make out his trademark sound with the hi-hat it's so bad. What a tragedy!

Queen II - My favorite (March of the Black Queen, Ogre Battle, Father to Son, THE LOOSER IN THE END [underrated]... just fantastic songs) ANATO - also my favorite (it's a perfect album basically) ADATR or NOTW, can't decide which one. Probably NOTW because it's not as close to ANATO sound and songwriting wise.
I will miss the Works (has everything from Pop to Rock, all shades of 1980's Queen) and SHA (especially Tenement Funster [again, underrated, again a Roger Song])

Some unpopular choices:
The Miracle Innuendo
I discovered Queen as a 13 year old boy, when my brother bought the Innuendo LP on the release day. My father had the Miracle on LP. These 2 records are the Soundtrack of my youth, more than any other. Off course I discovered the whole Queen catalogue bit by bit throughout 1991 and 1992, but these 2 are still special to me.
To choose the 3rd one is dufficult...I think I will go with
Queen II to have a counterpart to my first 2 choices.

Most popular album saved from the flames thus far is (drum roll) - no, not Innuendo - Queen II. With A Day at the Races in 2nd place.
No votes yet for Flash Gordon, The Works, A Kind of Magic.
Plus ca change.

If the popular "Stussy" from waaaaay back in QZ ever came to QueenChat, there would likely be one sober vote for A Kind of Magic. I seem to recall that he grew up with A Kind of Magic being his first Queen album (and was his favorite Queen album).
I am guessing that there might even be a few people the rank either The Works or Flash Gordon as one of their three albums.
I recall a guy somewhat recently painstakenly "rearranged" and uploaded his version of Flash Gordon (perhaps without movie dialog?). Maybe Flash Gordon would be one of his three albums

Someone lent me A Kind of Magic back in 87 or so. Quite confidently informed me it was the "best" Queen album. Whether they'd genuinely heard ALL the others, I don't know.
Anyway it didn't matter, because a few months later I'd decided he was wrong. Why? Because I'd just bought Hot Space..
Ahhh the 80s.
