Have I missed any news on this everyone please? I’ve read & seen some posts on Dr May’s Insta, that’s it’s some type of green screen merge of (I assume) the original Brixton Academy vers with current day Dr May. Sounds interesting but where is it? We had DBY, resurrection & TMLWKY videos re-released. This next video seems to have missed out on that initial publicity wave. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Yay I can answer my own question! Announced today on his insta. “video film for Back to the light - Time Traveller” (?!) released “next Friday.” So I think that means 10th Sept. the screenshot he posted looks interesting!!
With it being described as a “video film” maybe it’s not just a promo for the title track?

With it being described as a “video film” maybe it’s not just a promo for the title track? May that positive sunny optimistic outlook stay with you for many years to come.... It's just the original promo doctored.

Ah well, yip I guess I’m all about the Brian! At least it’s something more than just an ‘HD’ update. That said, I loved being able to see Resurrection in better quality!! Still excited to see this promo on Friday. Just happy to see Brian’s solo material getting some love & that it will be available to stream. Tbf I’m far more interested in Brian’s solo work & work with Kerry than that Q+AL output

Just watched the video. Mixed feelings. Still think the whole thing with the white hat, the 74 year old Brian doing lipsync to his 44/45 year old vocals gives of a weird vibe. But at least it's getting a physical release as well on CD and 7", so it's something for the collection.

In before the hate - *I* enjoyed it! I thought the end was sweet.
Are the effects on par with a Marvel blockbuster? No. And that's just fine by me.

off the bat, i'll say i like it - a lot. the old-time movie theatre opening shot coupled with the hat really work. a really nice touch/nod to the golden era of cinema is perhaps Brian looking back fondly on BTTL. the video itself? why shouldn't he be lip-syncing? that's what ALL videos are, mime.
also, really great to see Cozy retained from the 1993 live video. and the arm around himself at the end - really nice touch. a little bit of the reassurance he probably needed back in '92, but with age and wisdom we realise there's only ourselves can get us through the shit that life hurls.
8½/10

Well, feelings from the video are strange. I can't say that I liked it, but I can't call it bad either. It was interesting to see other shots from Brixton. It's also a little strange that Brian enters the Hammersmith, but turns out in Brixton. And please, tell Brian that his tour was in 1993, not in 1992. It's not the first time I've seen this error from him.

It has some nice shots, but overall looks really amateuristic. Also the problems others have already said in this thread.

Intro is good before he starts playing with himself (oo-er). Stuff like that just freaks me out and I had a feeling it would be that sort of video. Shouldn't have bothered but horses for courses I guess.

I like the idea of a time-traveling Brian going back and revisiting those days, but there's an obvious tinge of sadness in 2021 Brian's face. The green screening of Brian watching the band was a little cheap looking, but I thought the integration of him onstage with '93 Brian May Band was done really well. Gave him a chance to rock out with Cozy one last time, I suppose. I wouldn't mind time-traveling Brian showing up in other videos that are needed to be made; I don't think any were made for the Another World album, so that might be a good approach! Well done, Brian.

I thought it worked really well, great to see Brian still attempting things. There are always going to be the pessimistic amongst us, and that I'm afraid will never change. If Brian had just stuck out the original video he'd had copped flack, so He was up against it from the start. At the end of the day it boils down to one thing, and one thing only....The music, and Back To The Light is still a bloody good song, and way better than 99% of the shit thrown at us theses days. I'm off to watch and enjoy the new video again!! Enjoy your weekends everyone.

Cool that we'll see an instrumental BTTL on the digital release of the single though. Shame he didn't just include an instrumental version of (tracks from) the album in the boxset though

I thought that was great. Really poignant, and a reminder that we're all getting older. Wouldn't it be great to be able to travel back to our younger selves?
Also, is it me or are there some different bits in that to the album version? There seems to be an extra or different bit of guitar at 3:33, there's an extra 'Yeah' after the first guitar solo, and the beginning of the end guitar solo also sounds a bit different.
Edit:- I've just pre-ordered the CD single and it says Back To The Light (2021 Mix) on the order confirmation. Not sure if this is a new mix or just the remastered album version.

On the point of that new release - I’m not missing anything, there’s nothing new here is there? The 2021 Mix is just the remastered version backed with a repeat of the guitar version that no-one is bothered about?

Nope, but the digital version apparently has a karaoke version.

Nope, but the digital version apparently has a karaoke version. Thanks for this info - Justin Shirley-Smith said on the first ‘BriTV’ day that an instrumental version was coming as a b-side/extra track to the singles; I was disappointed it’s not on the physical releases but relieved to hear it’ll still be available.

Eh.... This kind of crappy de-interlacing of old footage and rotoscope should not be in any professionally edited video. I think it was a nice idea but Brian clearly wasn't prepared to pay the price of getting it done at the level things like this really require.

I like the video, it's a little bit different. Sure, it's kitsch in the extreme, but the whole thing about virtually anything to do with Queen is that it is unashamedly kitsch and somehow they get away with it, it's the vibe of the band and I mean that in a very sincere and loving way rather than a scathing way that say NME or Rolling Stone might have meant. Oh for sure it's strange to see 74 year old Brian lip synching to a song he recorded 30 years ago but still, I like the overall effect. The older Brian May appearing alongside his younger self and giving his younger self some moral support is an extremely high-romantic trope, and in the light of the pandemic the whole thing takes on quite a bit more emotion. Let's not forget, we almost lost him this year, so frankly I'm happy to see him out there and doing something. Maybe he'll make a new solo album?

So I hear that Brian May is playing with himself in his latest video. I haven't seen it myself but I think that sort of carry on is disgraceful.

It is and it does, especially if you consider the spookily prescient lyrics: I'll be there No matter what you're going through In the dark I care I'm holding on, I'm hoping on It's still the same old me inside [...] I'll be there Though maybe you don't hear me babe I still care No matter when, I'll still be there When you make it to the other side I'm going back

I liked it. Makes me thinking once more what could have been if Brian carried on with his solo career. I would have loved it if both Brian and Roger had been more prolific in their post-Queen solo careers, and in another universe some of these songs could have been incorporated into the Q+AL tours.
