- Wished they kept the "Stone Cold Rat" medley up to the '85 tour. I felt like the Rock In Rio, Australia and Japan crowds got robbed when that got taken out.
- Liar should've have had a longer life on stage. Hearing it with Freddie's 79-80s voice was a treat. Hell, I wished they performed that more often during the Crazy Tour!

I've always wondered why they didn't lower I Want To Break Free when Fred was around. There are so many recordings that have him just messing up the song (some definitely worse than others), why they didn't lower it is beyond me

It's probably safe to assume the crowd would miss this song on the set, not to mention it was still an opportunity to promote/sell a pretty recent album and single. It's still a pretty mainstream song in 2023, so it was probably still getting a lot of airplay back in 1986 even with AKOM freshly released.

Besides agreeing with most things that have been suggested here (other than ditching the medleys), I'd say a big chunk of The Works and A Kind Of Magic would benefit from being recorded more like their live counterparts (in some cases where the song wasn't even played live, it still deserves that kind of energy and arrangement). Many songs from this era sound overly processed, artificial and somewhat empty - at times it sounds almost as if they only have drums and some shitty synth holding the harmony. I miss Queen's big sound, with big fat guitars.

Well Sammy didn't suggest to drop the song but lower the key which probably would have been for the better

I've begun to absolutely hate the keys in Magic and Works TYMDs. Completely changes the sound of the song, loses all its edge.

Not strictly a thought on what song should have been played differently, but rather which song should have NEVER been played. Who the heck thought it was a good idea to cover The Immigrant Song? Awesome song, but not Freddie's strongest moment in a long shot

It was clearly improvised in the moment and not a fully fleshed cover á la Jailhouse Rock. The band just had fun and I have it, too, when I listen to that performance

It's bananas to me that they never played Dead On Time live. It would've been such a banger. Also I always wanted to hear Brian sing lead on '39.
I understand why they added a keyboardist in later years but it really changed the feel of some things. If it were gone I feel like I wouldnt miss it much.
Not live, but I always thought that Dancer on Hot Space could be retooled into a great hard rock song if given a proper riff. I don't think the core of the song is that bad, but as it is the recording is toothless.

I totally agree with you about Dead on Time and Dancer but I'm inclined to disagree about the keyboardist. Sure, some songs rather sounded less impactful (mainly Save Me in '82) but overall it gave their shows something new. Songs like the ones from Hot Space or especially Crazy Little Thing really benefited from it and I do like some of the additional layers it gave to sungs like ITTWWC, BoRhap and WATC. Would they have sounded worse without one? No, of course not but I don't think the 5th musician live was a bad idea

I can't remember the source, but from what I recall, their reasoning for having Freddie sing '39 instead of Brian was that it'd be ridiculous to have one of the greatest lead vocalists just kind of stand there. With I'm In Love With My Car, he atleast did piano. Brian does '39's lead vocals in every version after the FM Tribute Concert, so that's something to enjoy.

I would have liked to have a standalone version of Killer Queen and The March Of The Black Queen.
What's yours?
For studio songs, I'd like to hear One Year of Love with a Brian solo instead of the sax, even if it's the same note-for-note. Yes, I need one more Brian solo. For live songs, White Queen is a favourite of mine, especially for the instrumental section. I always feel that part ends too early, juuuust when I'm getting lost in the music. If only it lasted a little bit longer! Yeah, I wish White Queen had of been similar to the BBC version on the LP. Although I like the released version I prefer the lead break in the BBC and live versions.

Quite nitpicky but i wish Freddie kept doing the "Fun It" references at the beginning of "Keep Yourself Alive" , even after the Jazz Tour.

I like how he referenced Sex Show (which would eventually be Back Chat), it'd be cool if Freddie used the intro jam to KYA to reference other songs that weren't on the setlist. Like how he referenced Liar in 2nd Sapporo '79 Now I'm Here.

Yeah true, I really love these little references during jams / improvs. Other examples would be 'Cool Cat', 'Another One Bites the Dust' and 'Under Pressure' being referenced during 'Now I'm Here' (Edinburgh 82 / July 80 shows / Caracas & Monterrey 81 respectively) or Freddie kinda singing bits of 'Need Your Loving Tonight' during Nishinomiya 82's 'Somebody to Love' breakdown

It’s kinda sacrilege to suggest, but I’ve always wanted to hear an edit of “The Prophet’s Song” that cuts the vocal canon section.
I love the song, but sometimes I wish there was a punchier version.

Well it's not live, but there's this. There's also the drums/bass/rhythm guitar demo where you can hear how they recorded the two sections. Roger just does a 1-bar count on his hi-hat to transition into the reprise. Can't find it on YouTube though.

On the one hand I agree, on the other that final BBC session is my favourite purely because they change most of the tracks up so much.

No other way to describe it. 🤬 I will add, (should probably be a new thread) it still really narks me that the last line of Love of My Life was never sung properly. Every….single….time. I sing the correct version.

TRUE, one for this. On the alternate copy of Long Beach '77, the taper actually points out that Freddie got the lyrics wrong. When Brian performed the song in his solo 90's tours, he did the right lyrics a couple times, but everyone sung the wrong one (probably because of Live Killers), so he just went back to the wrong one. I'm really hoping that we find a super early LOML where Freddie had the lyrics fresh in his mind from rehearsals. That's honestly our only chance of ever hearing the right lyrics.

I kind of never noticed that he didn't sing the proper lyrics as I rarely ever listen to Queen's studio work anymore but now I'll probably never not notice, thanks a lot... Also thanks for pointing out the alt source of LB, I'm discovering the show from a really different POV as I've always ignored it up to this point

When I got super deep into live stuff, I nearly abandoned the record versions of the songs. Plus, it made me miss out on songs never played live. Re-discovering their studio stuff made me fall in love all over again. Since we were already talking about it, Love Of My Life in particular is so fucking beautiful on the record. Also yes, the Long Beach alt is a really fun listen. The girl taping is definitely a superfan, so it's awesome to hear her reactions to the shit that happens in the show. She accidentally irreparably damaged side 2, would've been really nice to get the rest of Stone Cold Crazy.

Yeah and the harp at the end, like a flock of birds taking off... and the way Prophet's Song leads into it at the beginning... I've always thought that the heads/tails combo of Prophet's Song/LOML was the highlight of Opera. I guess I never really thought about the live lyric change, since little lyric changes happen all the time. But now I cant unnotice it haha

I just discovered that another band, Alphaville, have remade their hits in a symphonic version...why don't Brian and Roger (also because Brian already does it live) follow this idea?
