Hi everybody.
Below are some pages taken from the May 1989 issue (period between May 17th and 30th) of the English magazine Smash Hits.
In addition to the article Are Queen Fans Completely Barmy?, the magazine also contains a short review of the newly released album The Miracle (written by Tom Doyle), an interview with Freddie Mercury and the full lyrics of the new track I Want It All, Queen's new single at the time.
Have a good reading!

Good stuff, but that’s not a real interview with Freddie.

I was at that convention…. Which makes me very old. And would explain why I thought that it was at Southport (the year before that I also attended) the year the Miracle came out. Ho hum - ageing stinks

Good stuff, but that’s not a real interview with Freddie. What makes you think the interview is not real? The answers sound very Freddie. And we know he did speak to Smash Hits previously for the Barcelona promotion.

What has always struck me as odd about the interview with Freddie is that he kind of praised Thatcher at a time when most gay people hated her for Clause 28.

Ho hum - ageing stinks My first convention too. The train journey back out from Camber Sands to civilisation was chaotic. I think I'd bought something impractical for train journeys (can't remember what). I drove to all the other ones I went to.

I do remember the year before in Southport, the London train home was filled equally with Queen fans and … nuns. Cue a whole load of nun related puns on queen songs - none of which bettered Tie your Mother Superior Down…. Those were the days

I mean, you must have good reason for believing so. It sounds very much like Freddie to me - especially the sentence about Queen's longevity. If someone can post a link to why it is faked or has any proof then, fine, I shall change my mind. The construct of the interview tells me it was genuine - right down to SH stating they only had a few minutes to talk to Fred.

And I just do not see what the motive would be for SH to fake such a thing; I mean, it is not as if the interview is controversial or hilarious or states anything really ridiculous. I would lay all my money on that interview being totally genuine. If anyone can prove otherwise, I shall hold my hands up and walk away in shame!

I was an avid smash hits reader. It was full of made up fluff like that interview - his likeness to Lucan was a common theme. They did it to loads of people. Tony Hadley who they called Tony Foghorn Hadley, there was a long running joke about Suggs that I can’t remember the details of - basically much of their stuff was a piss take. Including this interview.

I don't have "proof", but there's no way Freddie would have engaged with the Lucan nonsense - he'd have walked away / hung up the phone.

I understand what you are saying, but I think Freddie had a sense of humour about such things. And I am sure it was a running joke for a while with Smash Hits around the time; and he seemed to have no issue with speaking with them mere months before when he was in Spain. We will have to respectfully agree to disagree on this then.
