I think that quote from Roger is spot on, and I agree 100%, although it's slightly ironic, considering half of the tracks on the last few albums used electronic drums. and not to mention the vocoders and other vocal affects all over his first two solo albums albums, and some of "his" biggest Queen hits.

I've not had time to watch that video dissecting FIA, but is there actual hard evidence autotune was used, or is this just what people think they're hearing (no offence)? Could it, for example, be an anomaly on the tape of a 30+ year old recording? Yes, there is hard evidence. If you can spare 3 minute, just watch the last part. The autotune application is in bad taste in my opinion. Yeah, obviously I can hear the difference now that thing with the little 'dip' has been pointed out, although a little devil inside me wants to argue that it could have been a different take. I remember Brian saying in one of the documentaries that Freddie could sing two takes so identically that they would 'phase' on the tape, so how do we know that there wasn't a take with the 'dip' and one without? Also, if they corrected that, why didn't they correct the little falter in his voice at 0:50, on the word 'fire', when he sings 'fiiyeerr' and his voice drops a bit at the end? As I said, I can hear it now, but I wouldn't have heard it otherwise, and in my opinion, it's all a fuss over nothing but it keeps that YouTube guy amused. 🙂

No, it can't be. I don't know how to explain and do not try to. But there are different levels of perception for those kinds of things by different people, so I'll leave it at that.

No, autotune only sounds robotic when it's used incorrectly.... Unfortunately most music technicians and artists nowadays use it incorrectly. Autotune was ment to correct slight off-pitched notes in nearly correct sang parts. It was not ment to make completely incorrect sung parts sound correct, because that is simply impossible without hearing the use of autotune. But I'm 100% sure that even you don't hear the autotune when it's used correctly.... In fact, I'm quite certain that there are instances where you will say no autotune was used while in fact it WAS used in the correct way.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread - if you compare the official release of Rock Montreal to the bootleg recordings, there's actually quite a lot of pitch correction. But it's so subtle that it doesn't affect your listening experience.

Montreal has more overdubs than it has pitch correction. And the overdubs are quite noticeable to me as Freddie's tone (and the mic quality) changes quite drastically
