I know it's not a popular song among Queen fans at all. I think a lot of it has to do with the lyrics. When I heard the song for the first time I did not understand one word of the lyrics. As a young norwegian I had that "advantage" kind of. I always thought it was musically great as a pop song.
What I like about the song:
- The positive atmosphere musically. It actually cheers me up when I listen to it. (Yeah, i know the lyrics. And they are kind of positive even though its about a very serious theme) - I love the way its bass-driven. A bit like ABTD and Dragon Attack. - I love the way its mixed. Sounds very clean and you hear bass, drums, acoustic guitar and voices very clearly. - The way Freddie sings a little bit like Elvis in the verses is lovely. - The drum and bass run leading to the chorus is amazing. - Catchy chorus and fun guitar solo. - To me its a well written pop-song that probably would have been more famous if it was about summer or something.
Is the song really that hated still?

I love it too! The contrast between the sparseness of the verses, and the power of the choruses works really well, and I've always thought that The Game was one of the better sounding albums.

I really like the song. Also, it's part of Made In Heaven with the YEAHHHH sample! ๐ Wow, I didn't realise that. Then again, 'Yeah!' isn't a track I listen to repeatedly. ๐

I like it too. Especially the bridge (you need help, look at yourself...) The wild vocal harmony on โitโs o- kay-o kay-o kay gets me in the right spot Itโs a cool song, donโt care if someone doesntโt like it. Different tastes. I love Hot Space too ๐

Bit like marmite this one - you either like it or you donโt. Probably one of my least favourite tracks and certainly the weakest on The Game. Lyrically I think itโs pretty lazy. The bridge section brings it to life a little, but in a Man on the Prowl kind of way.

The Game is one of my favorite albums, possibly my favorite. The one track I have never been fond of is this one. But lately, as I've been listening to the album, I've come to like the track. I have never been a fan of the lyrics and I've always wondered what came first on this track (the music or the lyrics), because I do dig melody and construction of the song. It's definitely grown on me.

I really like Donโt Try Suicide...for many of the same reasons. Itโs such an upbeat and happy song....with the contrast of the words being sort of morbid. It makes it kind of fun. And musically itโs great too. I love the entire Game album.

It's one of the very few Queen that I truly dislike. The lyrics seem like they're trying to be funny but it feels like an in-joke that I'm not privy to so none of it lands. The different sections sound like they've been haphazardly cobbled together. Abrupt transitions can be good of course but something about the way DTS jumps from one bit to the next just does not work for me. I even dislike the vocals; the rockabilly thing Freddie does is fun and charming in Crazy Little Thing but in Don't Try Suicide it gets obnoxious. There are so many weird hiccups and odd vocal inflections that he seems like he's trying too hard.
That "You got it" bit in particular is sounds super gross and ugly to me in the worst way.
Honestly, it feels like it was supposed to be a throwaway B-side but wound up getting thrown on the album to fill time.
Other folks seem to enjoy it, which is cool, but nothing about it lands for me at all.
The one thing I like about it is that it eventually resulted in "Yeah," which is a towering musical achievement the likes of which few musicians could ever hope to conceive of.

The bolded section is exactly what I agree with. Personally, I don't mind the song to some extent (if I'm listening to The Game I won't skip past it), but I don't go out of my way to listen to it. There are elements to it that I like, but it really seems like it's more of a throwaway B-side that the band put on the album.

Honestly, it feels like it was supposed to be a throwaway B-side but wound up getting thrown on the album to fill time. B-side to AOBTD in US/Canada. I think it's a weak track too - but they have weaker. sound production on this one is what keeps me interested. just focus on john's bass and go from there. ignore the vocals.

I always really liked The Game, but like many others here have said, I thought the song was not worthy of the album. I didn't hate it, but would skip the track more often than not. Appreciated the bass line though.

Yeah, if Human Body had replaced Suicide then the album would have had three Roger songs and only two Freddie songs. On paper yes. Even though ABTD was Deacon's song its a known fact that Freddie worked a lot with it. I bet he even changed structure and stuff (this is me guessing). But Freddie stated that he was going to work loads on that song when he heard the idea for it. Same goes for Rogers songs. Freddie did a lot with GaGa and AKOM etc. So Freddie was a big force in the 80s even though he didnt get the credits for some of the big hits.

Freddie ran out of Ideas on Hot Space, but his writing was decent on The Works. It's A Hard Life wasn't the big hit on the album, but It's my favorite. Keep Passing The Open Windows was good, and Is This The World We Created co written with Brian was nice. Roger and John came up with the big hits, but Freddie and Brian still wrote the most songs. Brian's I Go Crazy was a nice edition to the album.

Don't Try Suicide Is the only song on The Game I'm not crazy about. It's not terrible, but not one my favorites.

I like it. If anyone has the opportunity, listen to the acoustic guitar on the MFSL version vs. the 2011 remaster, and tell me what you think.

I enjoy the song as well. I always assumed that the 'yeah' on MIH was sampled from Action This Day (second verse), but indeed the 'yeah' in Don't Try Suicide also sounds very similar!

I think it's generally well-written, well-performed and well-produced, but I still don't like it, out of purely subjective reasons (it doesn't strike a chord with me, that's all).
