Hi everyone.
Below an article (in Dutch) taken from the music magazine Muziek Express dated February 1980; it talks about Queen's 'Crazy Tour' of November-December 1979 and refers to the concert at the Bristol Hippodrome on December 9th, 1979. In a very small interview with the author of this article, Freddie Mercury also gave informations about the new Queen album.
Below is a scan of the original article and the English translation.
Enjoy the reading!
With a series of formidable performances, the supergroup turns the whole of England upside down
And then there was the new QUEEN...
For three long years Queen has refused to perform in England. That was the result of a thunderous row with the press there, which time and time again completely wrote the group into the ground. At the end of last year, the group surpassed itself during a number of concerts. Queen came, saw and conquered...
In front of the Hippodrome in Bristol, dozens of girls have been standing around wounded for hours, trudging along. Time can't go fast enough for them. That evening their group Queen performs. They had to wait more than three years for it and as far as we are concerned it has been settled. We think it is the first confrontation with the four musicians.
Hours later they go home overjoyed and with squeaky ears. The group has not disappointed them and another 2000 fans have been arranged for the coming years.
So you can't avoid it. Queen plays the stars of heaven and pulls out all the stops to come out as the big winner every night. After the concert we get to talk to Queen about the state of affairs. No English journalist is to be seen, they have apparently given up hope. Brian May is the first to trudge out of the changing rooms.
"Are we fooling those people because of this success?" does he repeat our question "No, after all, playing is not just for the journalists, but for the music lovers. And we understood that you can't let those people down and cheer you on. Because others ruin it for you. The fans are not to blame for the smear that has been waged against us. And we were really looking forward to this tour. As you know we bought a French studio. That led to so many situations that at a certain point we were more busy with business than with music. Freddie in particular was terrible and insisted on touring again." Lord Mercury, who joins in and nods in agreement at Brian May's remarks, is in a good mood. "It went well tonight. And those fans...they are absolutely crazy guys. I'm so glad we started making music again. It's still fantastic when you have compatriots".
"The new album? Eh, we will record it after this tour. We will probably use two songs that we have already recorded in Munich, the rest we will do in Montreux. If all goes well, it will be released at the end of 1980. And don't worry, it's going to be a quintessential Queen record and the very best yet".
And they are off, in a hurry to a secret hotel, where a small party will be held. Justifiably.
