Excellent article. There are many quotes from this article that I take to heart, but the following quotes particularly struck me: "However, Deacon doesn't have a particular playing style -- it's just 'him,' which is why his playing is missed."
"I've heard that John never wanted to be told the chord progressions, because he wanted to do his own thing."
"Queen without John's musical sensibility would have been a very different animal."

Fantastic article, thank you! It’s one I will read several times over. I particularly love that Neil Fairclough enjoys the trail-away bass ending on Sail Away sweet Sister, like I do.

"I've heard that John never wanted to be told the chord progressions, because he wanted to do his own thing." Example #58361 indicating that less theoretical knowledge will almost always translate to more creativity - and not just in music. It's a completely unquantifiable, but anecdotal like this pops up time and time again.

If you have to sum up how much Deacy influenced a lot of bassist, just think how many people have said that the 1st bass line they ever learned is a Queen song, and how many Fender Precision Basses this man sold just by using it.
