Seen it 3 times before. Got my tickets for June too.

Don't shoot me, but I love it! Seen the musical 46 times all over Europe (A.O. London, Milan, Budapest, Copenhagen, Paris...).
Will be in London from June 2 till June 8, so I guess I will hit the 50 times.
Also build quite a large WWRY collection in the past 20 years...

To be clear, I am very "live and let live" about the musical.  It's not for me, but as others have said, many people love it.

The same applies to QAL, although not to the film, mainly because I know it will become "definitive" over time as fewer people are around to point out it's horribly inaccurate.

Mission accomplished!  I'm in the same boat as you - live and let live, won't judge anyone for loving it. I look at it more that I lack the faculties to appreciate it.

I’m that one other person on this board! I too enjoy musical theatre. Les Miserables and Jesus Christ Superstar would have to be my favorites - I’ve seen multiple versions of both. 

I saw We Will Rock You a few years ago when it toured and got to meet the Real Wizard beforehand which was great - and really impressed my boys! We got tickets up front sitting amongst the season subscribers, some of who were not happy about how loud it was. I don’t think they were expecting an actual rock band to be performing. My kids and I enjoyed it and had a great time. 

You mentioned juke box musicals - one of my favorite shows was Five Guys Named Moe. We had no idea what it was but it was one of the few shows we could get tickets to in New York. I became a huge Louis Jordan fan after seeing that. 

Haven't seen Hamilton yet but I love the cast album. It was just here for the second time but I waited too late to try to get tickets. I thought maybe the demand had gone down but I was wrong. But I did get to see Hadestown with my oldest son this year which I enjoyed. He saw Hamilton a few years ago. 

I haven’t suffered through Long Day’s Journey into Night but I did manage to see O’Neill’s A Touch of the Poet many years ago with Timothy Dalton and Vanessa Redgrave. Wonderful evening. I can say I’ve been in the same room as Prince Barin himself!

Oh I’m also a fan of Gilbert and Sullivan thanks to a great uncle who used to take my family when I was a kid. Took my boys to see a local production of Pirates of Penzance which was fun. 

So so yeah there’s at least one other musical theatre fan here! 

Im the same as you about the musical, I hope those who do go to see it enjoy it. I was supposed to go and see the touring version twice a few years ago but it was called off both times due to severe weather storms lol. Just my luck. As for the film, I did enjoy for what I knew it would be - a fantasy version of Freddie (mostly). The concert sequences were amazing to hear in proper surround sound.

A post to blow any credibility, but in general I quite like musical theatre, I mean some of it is tosh, and I understand why people have an issue with the cast suddenly bursting into song, but in many ways it's no different to fantasy or sci fi, you just have to be prepared to believe that what is on stage is a valid reality.



I'm probably done seeing WWRY though, seen it twice. Once on the original London run and also in Toronto where Now I'm Here was added. I think it's fun, but No One But You is absolutely the high point of the show which is a little weird.



I've seen plenty of musicals over the years, some great, some not so much.  I've seen too many to list, but comments on about a half dozen below.
I'm not a fan of Phantom, It's funny how even in current day performances the music comes straight from the 80's. It really needs to be rescored so as not to sound like something Giorgio Moroder wrote. It is so dated now.



Wicked has a great story but only two good songs.



Les Miserables is just brilliant, the film on the other hand was awful.



Evita is possibly my most played soundtrack over the years, though to be fair I've had both the original album and the London cast album since 1978. ALW/Tim Rice were always terrible at endings, and the ending of Evita often leaves the audience going 'is it over?' before the starts, which can be a strange vibe in a theatre.



Superstar is probably the best ALW musical. Its got some excellent proper rock songs in it.



Hamilton is a show everyone should see, you can watch it on Disney to see the original cast but I recommend seeing it live because the tv version doesn't do justice to the choreography. There are times that the counter rotating stages are used so brilliantly and that doesn't come across on tv.



Probably the best example of why people love or hate musicals is  A Musical - From Something Rotten I urge you to click on the you tube link and listen to it whether you love or hate musicals. If you like musicals, you'll recognise the calls to other shows within it, and if you don't, you'll appreciate the lyrics. (Though if you don't like musicals I doubt you'll survive all 7 minutes of it.)
Incidentally Something Rotten was fabulous, it was going to open in the UK around the time Covid started but I dont think that's still happening, which is a shame cause its a really funny show, I saw it on Broadway and it's the only show I've ever bought the soundtrack to while still in the theatre.

My recent music purchases (all in the last two weeks) were Al Stewart, Manfred Mann, Joe Cocker, Johnny Cash, The Velvet Underground, Seal, Blondie, Hazel O'Connor and Pink Floyd.
Which is to say, liking musical theatre doesn't mean you are pigeonholed into being a fan of Glee.  (which I wasn't, though I didn't hate it if I happened upon it)

And to be fair, I don't usually listen to musicals at home despite playing music pretty much constantly but I'm always up for seeing one)

 Yep, totally concur. One snippet of Tomorrow from Annie and I am ready to stab in my own ears with an ice pick.

And WWRY truly is atrocious. The 'storyline' and the 'jokes' are, quite simply, shite. Worst of all, I actually spent my hard earned money to go see the bloody thing during its opening week in London back in 2002 - even drowning my poor liver in vodka before it started could not numb the annoyance I felt sitting through two hours of such inane, vacuous nonsense. I would have to inject myself with heroin before ever sitting through that monstrosity again. 

Fair point. I guess I should have stated I hated the old school, cheesy kind of musicals. And I have to admit I do actually have a soft spot for Phantom Of The Opera.

I cannot disagree about JCS. I have never seen the show itself but a few years back I heard the lead actor, Steve Balsamo (I think!) sing Gethsemane (hope that is the right title) and it blew my bloody socks off. He sang with such feeling that it was actually very moving.

I'll bet you wont be going to the new Black Sabbath Ballet then lol
