Reminds me of one of my favourite Brian and Roger moments ever, in the QAL documentary, where Brian is talking about the musical and how great it was and then says something like "Roger had a bit of a different opinion" and they cut to Roger saying "I hate the medium of musicals. I absolutely hate it."

I'd find it more entertaining spending two hours trying to poke butter up a pig's arse with a porcupine needle.

Seen it twice in London.. Was twice fun. Live music. Good singers. The audience left exited. Beats watching the tele alone at a hotelroom for me.

I'll take a musical over the Bejart ballet 11 times out of 10.
And I don't even like musicals.

Don't shoot me, but I love it! Seen the musical 46 times all over Europe (A.O. London, Milan, Budapest, Copenhagen, Paris...). Will be in London from June 2 till June 8, so I guess I will hit the 50 times. Also build quite a large WWRY collection in the past 20 years...

Never seen it, heard the soundtrack once and wouldn`t do it again. Not a fan of the musical genre. Tin hat on now I would prefer another film Bo-rap or not too Bo-rap 2 that is the question.

To be clear, I am very "live and let live" about the musical. It's not for me, but as others have said, many people love it. The same applies to QAL, although not to the film, mainly because I know it will become "definitive" over time as fewer people are around to point out it's horribly inaccurate.

I'm in the same boat as you - live and let live, won't judge anyone for loving it. I look at it more that I lack the faculties to appreciate it.

I enjoy musical theatre, solely because my wife is a Broadway fanatic, so I’ve seen some truly excellent stage shows over the past dozen years. The one that tested my mettle wasn’t a musical; it was Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night, with a stellar cast (Jessica Lange, Michael Shannon, Gabriel freakin’ Byrne!). When my wife told our friend, who is a dramaturg, that we were seeing the show he said, “Oh my. A good production with a good crew and a good director can stage it in 3 ½ hours and make it seem like 10 minutes. A bad production etc. can stage it in 5 hours and make it seem like a lifetime.” This was the former, but all the same the subjects – Irish Catholic guilt, mental illness, and alcoholism – were so incredibly depressing that when the show was over, I was so fucking depressed that when we left the theatre I snapped to my wife, “That’s it! I’m choosing the next show we see, and it’s not gonna be depressing!”
(I think I chose Fun Home, ha! If you know anything about that production, it’s also pretty depressing, but it’s gussied up with catchy tunes. But I loved that, especially the comic the show is based on.)
And because no one asked, my favorite musicals that I’ve seen have been Hair (the 2011 production) and Company (both the all-star cast – Stephen Colbert, Neil Patrick Harris, and Christine Hendricks, among many others – and the recent revival). I also liked In The Heights and Hamilton, the latter of which we finally saw when nosebleed tickets finally made it just south of $100 a pop.
I also just remembered I didn’t much care for Sunday In The Park With George, only because Sondheim has a tendency to repeat names as nauseum in his numbers, and I didn’t care for hearing my name sung 50 times in a three-minute song!
I realize these stories probably appeal to, like, one other person on this board, but there is good theatre out there. Even jukebox musicals – School of Rock, Jersey Boys, Ain’t Too Proud To Beg – have their merits, though they’re not for me, so if WWRY were to come to the US, I doubt I’d see it unless tickets were super cheap.

I’m that one other person on this board! I too enjoy musical theatre. Les Miserables and Jesus Christ Superstar would have to be my favorites - I’ve seen multiple versions of both. I saw We Will Rock You a few years ago when it toured and got to meet the Real Wizard beforehand which was great - and really impressed my boys! We got tickets up front sitting amongst the season subscribers, some of who were not happy about how loud it was. I don’t think they were expecting an actual rock band to be performing. My kids and I enjoyed it and had a great time. You mentioned juke box musicals - one of my favorite shows was Five Guys Named Moe. We had no idea what it was but it was one of the few shows we could get tickets to in New York. I became a huge Louis Jordan fan after seeing that. Haven't seen Hamilton yet but I love the cast album. It was just here for the second time but I waited too late to try to get tickets. I thought maybe the demand had gone down but I was wrong. But I did get to see Hadestown with my oldest son this year which I enjoyed. He saw Hamilton a few years ago. I haven’t suffered through Long Day’s Journey into Night but I did manage to see O’Neill’s A Touch of the Poet many years ago with Timothy Dalton and Vanessa Redgrave. Wonderful evening. I can say I’ve been in the same room as Prince Barin himself! Oh I’m also a fan of Gilbert and Sullivan thanks to a great uncle who used to take my family when I was a kid. Took my boys to see a local production of Pirates of Penzance which was fun. So so yeah there’s at least one other musical theatre fan here!

Looks like I'm the second musical theater fan on this board! I had tickets to the touring Broadway series for over 20 years and have probably seen every musical out there. I'll admit that I don't care for revivals like Carousel and Oklahoma, but I thoroughly enjoy most others. Recent favorites were Hamilton and Come From Away. I ended up giving up my tickets during the COVID mess and while I sometimes wish I still had them, I'm ok because I saw so many great shows over the years.

Im the same as you about the musical, I hope those who do go to see it enjoy it. I was supposed to go and see the touring version twice a few years ago but it was called off both times due to severe weather storms lol. Just my luck. As for the film, I did enjoy for what I knew it would be - a fantasy version of Freddie (mostly). The concert sequences were amazing to hear in proper surround sound.

Saw it on its original run - had been reluctant to go but won the tix. Had a good time, and a few years later took the kids to the touring show. Don’t need to go again though - not now the band are on the road.
Remember when it first arrived on the scene it was the only way to hear Queen’s music live. Its success led to Q&PR (actually enjoyed that show) and the QAL (enjoyed many of these shows) so whatever you think of musicals if you appreciate B&R being on the road it is in large part down to WWRY

A post to blow any credibility, but in general I quite like musical theatre, I mean some of it is tosh, and I understand why people have an issue with the cast suddenly bursting into song, but in many ways it's no different to fantasy or sci fi, you just have to be prepared to believe that what is on stage is a valid reality. I'm probably done seeing WWRY though, seen it twice. Once on the original London run and also in Toronto where Now I'm Here was added. I think it's fun, but No One But You is absolutely the high point of the show which is a little weird. I've seen plenty of musicals over the years, some great, some not so much. I've seen too many to list, but comments on about a half dozen below. I'm not a fan of Phantom, It's funny how even in current day performances the music comes straight from the 80's. It really needs to be rescored so as not to sound like something Giorgio Moroder wrote. It is so dated now. Wicked has a great story but only two good songs. Les Miserables is just brilliant, the film on the other hand was awful. Evita is possibly my most played soundtrack over the years, though to be fair I've had both the original album and the London cast album since 1978. ALW/Tim Rice were always terrible at endings, and the ending of Evita often leaves the audience going 'is it over?' before the starts, which can be a strange vibe in a theatre. Superstar is probably the best ALW musical. Its got some excellent proper rock songs in it. Hamilton is a show everyone should see, you can watch it on Disney to see the original cast but I recommend seeing it live because the tv version doesn't do justice to the choreography. There are times that the counter rotating stages are used so brilliantly and that doesn't come across on tv. Probably the best example of why people love or hate musicals is A Musical - From Something Rotten I urge you to click on the you tube link and listen to it whether you love or hate musicals. If you like musicals, you'll recognise the calls to other shows within it, and if you don't, you'll appreciate the lyrics. (Though if you don't like musicals I doubt you'll survive all 7 minutes of it.) Incidentally Something Rotten was fabulous, it was going to open in the UK around the time Covid started but I dont think that's still happening, which is a shame cause its a really funny show, I saw it on Broadway and it's the only show I've ever bought the soundtrack to while still in the theatre. My recent music purchases (all in the last two weeks) were Al Stewart, Manfred Mann, Joe Cocker, Johnny Cash, The Velvet Underground, Seal, Blondie, Hazel O'Connor and Pink Floyd. Which is to say, liking musical theatre doesn't mean you are pigeonholed into being a fan of Glee. (which I wasn't, though I didn't hate it if I happened upon it) And to be fair, I don't usually listen to musicals at home despite playing music pretty much constantly but I'm always up for seeing one)

Absolutely with you on Evita (my first exposure was the Madonna film) and Superstar (the one with Tim Minchin). Both first seen in the screen rather than live (although I have seen Evita in a theatre now)

For the love of God. I hate musicals! Am I the only one who would rather have root canal work, than sit through The Sound of Music? Somebody must need a pension top up. 🙄 Yep, totally concur. One snippet of Tomorrow from Annie and I am ready to stab in my own ears with an ice pick. And WWRY truly is atrocious. The 'storyline' and the 'jokes' are, quite simply, shite. Worst of all, I actually spent my hard earned money to go see the bloody thing during its opening week in London back in 2002 - even drowning my poor liver in vodka before it started could not numb the annoyance I felt sitting through two hours of such inane, vacuous nonsense. I would have to inject myself with heroin before ever sitting through that monstrosity again.

I get that people hate the concept of musicals, but these days they cover such a wide range of styles that it's like saying you hate Vera Lynne and Black sabbath and everything in between. There is just no comparison between as an example Annie and Hamilton. Personally I like a fair few musicals but there's plenty I can't stand too. I am 100% with you on Tomorrow from Annie. There's a hundred other musical songs that put my teeth on edge, but many more I think are sublime. Ignoring the stage plays and the theatre aspect. The original 1970 recording of Jesus Christ Superstar featuring Ian Gillan and Murray Head as Jesus and Judas is just a damn fine album and worth a listen even if you hate the idea of stage musicals. Without the stage element it's just a concept album.

And I have to admit I do actually have a soft spot for Phantom Of The Opera. I cannot disagree about JCS. I have never seen the show itself but a few years back I heard the lead actor, Steve Balsamo (I think!) sing Gethsemane (hope that is the right title) and it blew my bloody socks off. He sang with such feeling that it was actually very moving.
