To be fair, it's worth more than the firewood in Lot 1

To be fair, it's worth more than the firewood in Lot 1 Is it? It’s only a small piece of silver and fire wood has become expensive.

the Bo Rhap lyrics and the Piano #42 & #44 could blow everything else away.
let's hear folk's guestimates:
#42 - Bo Rhap Lyrics - £1,500,000 #44 - Piano - £4,500,000
not bad for kindling and firewood!

Anyone know if Brian or Rog are gonna to buy the lyrics? Going by Brian‘s words about the auction , I don’t think he is. No idea about Roger. Brian‘s words from yesterday: “Tomorrow while I’m speaking passionately to Welsh farmers about cows and badgers and bovine TB, Freddie’s most intimate personal effects, and writings that were part of what we shared for so many years, will go under the hammer, to be knocked down to the highest bidder and dispersed forever. I can’t look. To us, his closest friends and family, it’s too sad.“ brianmay.com/brians-soapbox/2023/09/inescapably-thinking-so-much-about-freddie-auction/

I feel Brian is entitled to his opinion as at the end of the day we have no idea what has gone on between him and Mary , QP and anyone else . We can only speculate there has been opportunities to obtain some of the items . I’m often surprised when Brian shares a photo or video of the band that he says he has never seen before but it has been openly out there for years. Band aid rehearsal footage is a recent example .
From his comment I read into it that there is genuine sadness and that there is an undercurrent of disappointment within the family but mary can do as she wishes and has made it known why she has taken this route .
When I visited the auction last week my daughter and her friend asked why so many stage outfits and lyrics were up for auction and why weren’t they available for people to see long term . From the mouth of the young .

Blimey the piano *only* got £1.4m That’s somehow a little bummer. The estimate had been £2-3m.

I’m pretty surprised how ‘cheaply’ some of the outfits have gone for.

For Brian’s comments - I don’t feel that it was any dig at Mary or the auction. I read it that he’s being reflective seeing all that’s going on and is genuinely sad at seeing that stuff again and watching it all being dispersed to all the different corners of the world.

How, a grand piano ( and however it's described, it's not a baby but the next sizes up) takes a lot of room. I know this. When I was left my mum's piano after she died, of the same size, I used the money she eft me to build a room in the garden as I didn't have room in the house

I missed the end. Did the Bo Rhap lyrics go? Yes. £1.1m for the handwritten Bo Rhap lyrics. And £250k for the Don`t Stop Me Now lyrics.

one fact remains, had they approached her at any time in the previous 30yrs, the cost of rehoming the items would have been significantly less than it will be today. Had they approached her at any time in the previous 20yrs and she agreed to sell, the cost of rehoming the items would have been significantly less than it will be today.

I've tuned into the stream for a bit. There's a feeling of sadness I cannot possibly express that these artifacts did not end up with the other band members, or an archive, or a museum, but instead dispersed to the wealthy all over the world, almost certainly never to be seen again.
Are we all keeping track of what's being auctioned vs what's on the website ? I don't think I saw the early lyrics of Don't Stop Me Now or If You Can't Beat Them. These should've ended up in box sets before disappearing forever. Sigh.

There had only been one or two pictures. But it was written in the description, that it included the lyrics to quite a lot of songs.

Just had a look at the amounts paid tonight. Some people clearly have far too much money. Guess I'm not going to get that moustache comb for a tenner after all. Oh well. At least I won't look like a 70's porn star if I grew one just to use the comb....

The difficulty with the piano especially, as I think I suggested previously, is you need multiple multi-millionaire bidders.
For me the surprise was that there were multiple 6-figure bidders for the bangle, but the black jacket from the same vid only got to 110k or so.
Also, that the "proper art" Tissot portrait didn't go very high at all - one would have thought that was where Sothebys would be more accurate in their estimates, and more capable of making sure that plenty of potential bidders were aware.

Maybe it’s because almost everybody can wear the bangle, while the jacket is much more an item that you only put on display? For instance I could imagine Adam wearing that bangle at the next concert, but he would never wear or even fit into that jacket.

That's fair, but also, if you've missed out on some prime Bo Rhap thingy, there aren't that many further opportunities...

Me too-- Brian's a publicly diplomatic guy but when he gets really upset he doesn't seem to mince words. To me this felt like the melancholy of someone reflecting on moving out of their childhood home. Regardless, he didn't outright say he wouldn't be bidding on anything. If he didn't I'd be genuinely surprised. But who knows.

Auction update - counting all bids in, then the total (before fees) is currently about £15.5m (using the last known bids of what are now "premium lots"), far beyond the original estimate of about £11.4m.
Sotheby's will be getting a further £4m, which pays for their exhibition costs, one would have thought....
