Maybe they had to assign a value to some things, or quantify the actual assets, during the negotiations with Sony? With all the lawyers and accountants involved I can’t begin to imagine how detailed everything had to be.

Maybe discussions with Sony were the reason Mary decided to sell up.
Or maybe it was the reason QPL weren't buying it all up - a moratorium on spend while Sony were deciding a price.

Queen never wanted to buy anything (only Brian wanted some bits for his personal archive), they were just mad at Mary because they thought everything "belonged" to them (in some cases such as the stage costumes they were probably right, in most cases they weren't).
The more I know or hear about the auction background the more I'm confused why QP let Mary sell the costumes that almost certainly belonged to them - and Beach undoubtedly kept all the receipts and invoices. Queen must have had a reason why they gave up and just kept complaining on social networks without doing anything against Mary. Maybe it was just a PR move because they couldn't gain much (getting back 20 costumes to put back into their warehouse?) but they had more to lose (their public image)...
The weirdest thing is that Mary did not sell just items from the Garden Lodge. A majority of those lots were allegedly stored in the Queen warehouse and Mary asked to get them back for the sale... (Not a fact, just an assumption based on several indirect proofs). And Queen HAD TO return them and they were NOT happy about it. So many questions and mysteries...

For fans in Australia... The SBS channel is showing the 'Freddie Mercury Auction Special' docco. It's 41 minutes long and well worth checking out. I'm guessing everyone in the UK has probably already seen this. But for me in Australia this was something new.
