It sure has - thanks to our beloved mrscully :
ha, you're not entirely wrong. A friend of mine in New York had the gig of coaching Malek on how to look like he was playing piano like Freddie.
A thoroughly enjoyable read. I somehow missed this thread when you'd first posted it. A helluva way to run up that post count.

Hi, I'm "new" - but sadly only "here". In reality I'm "old". My first "contact" with Queen was hearing "Keep yourself alive" as a kid at night on "Radio Luxemburg". I was not hooked immediately, but was interested, cause they sounded a little bit like "Sweet". I saw the original "Queen" four times. And I applaud May and Taylor to always find interesting ways to carry on after the tragic end of the original line up. Life goes on and here we are.....

My favourite band in the 70s was also Sweet. I was lucky enough to see them in Feb 1978, which turned out to be Brian Connolly's last UK gig with the band. Sadly I never saw Queen live, so I envy you for that. 🙂

I was only 14 at the time, so it's a bit of a distant memory. It was the first rock concert I had ever been to, and I do remember being deafened for about two days afterwards! They played a lot of the tracks from Level Headed, which was new at the time. I think this might have been because Brian Connolly was struggling vocally by then, and the LH tracks were gentler for him to sing. To be honest, I wasn't all that keen on the softer direction of the album. I remember them stating with Action and Yesterday's Rain, and rather oddly playing Hell Raiser halfway through the set. Another highlight was Windy City, which closed the main set. I think the encore was Set Me Free. I was quite devastated when Brian left the band, and always hoped for a reformation, but of course, that never happened. Only Andy Scott left now. 😞

I also have my problems with "Level Headed". I love the early b-sides and the albums from "Sweet Fanny Adams" to "Off the record". I only saw the later incarnations of the band, the best was when both Scott and Tucker were on board, cause they had "the" sound. I also saw Brian's Sweet at some big Oldie Night in 88. There were around 6000 people there, he was the last to perform. And he was in such a bad state, that approximately 5.800 people left the building within 10 minutes.....it was any musicians regular nightmare becoming a sad reality....

Brian's post Sweet recordings and performances were cringe inducingly tragic, especially considering what a great voice he once had. I think his problems all stemmed from the assault outside the nightclub in 1974. He was probably suffering from what is now known as PTSD but of course, in those days it didn't exist. That said, I think his voice on Give Us A Wink and Off The Record sounded great. He just couldn't cut it playing live.

According to Andy Scott Brian was already a hard drinker when Andy joined the band. My theory about his voice is, that the band played much too loud in those days. Therefore he shouted too much to get heard, which ruined his voice. There are several recordings indicating, that he could hardly hear himself. He had a good "soft" singing voice with a great sound, but he was no loud hard rock shouter.
But what do we know....it's all history by now...

But what do we know....it's all history by now... You would have thought that if the band were playing loudly, the mixing desk guy would have made sure the singer could also be heard. Then again, I suppose things were different back then, and they didn't have the technology that exists today.

If a band is extremely loud already on stage, it's difficult to get a singer loud enough on the monitor because of feedback. You can see/hear that also on the infamous Musikladen-Concert-video. Even in that tiny TV Studio they must have been so loud....

Love the interactions with Steve in No You Don't.

But it's obvious, why it was never shown in 1974..."Sweet" were only of two bands being "kicked off" from "Beat Club/Musikladen". The other band was "Led Zeppelin", cause Robert Plant was unable to mime....he was always out of sync...

"Beat Club" started mid 60s and was a kind of "TOTPs" and "Old grey Whistle test". Early 70s it was remamed to "Musikladen" with the same team behind it.

Hi all! I will probably not be active much here as I’m more active over on Discord (which one or two of you may know me from) and other apps but I am a massive fan of Queen and have known about the forum for ages now, and have looked at the ‘Queen In Pictures’ thread a handful of times, but only just decided to join! I have a YouTube channel where I post concerts but it isn’t getting posted on too much at the moment as I’ve got exams (but I’ll have finished them this Thursday coming!). But yes, big big fan of Queen (especially the live stuff) and don’t be offended if I don’t respond it’s just because I’ve probably forgotten to come back and check replies (which I do alot on Discord too!)
