For example, A Night At The Opera is surprisingly dull. There's a ton of weird issues in its high end that I guess they "swept under the rug" by turning down the high end frequencies. They only turned down the high frequencies on digital releases, and in my opinion, they don't hold a candle to most LP releases I've heard. I will say, a lot of the earlier ones have an element of brightness (some might say a touch too much), but the DCC vinyl in particular is anything but dull 👌🤩 Can't wait for that anniversary to roll around 😉 I still think those sound pretty bad, because the high end is full of awful crackles and artifacts from using a primitive analog limiter. For example, there's some really annoying sounds in the Bohemian Rhapsody solo that I just cannot unhear anymore. The high end alone is like 80% of why I think ANATO deserves a remix, but everything else about that album is generally fine.

first listen: at first it seemed that the instrumental part was taken from the BBC sessions. second listen: it seemed that it sounds a little constrained, as if some instruments are missing, but it sounds cleaner than the original and it seems that the instruments sound more natural.I didn't think Roger's vocals were autotuned

I didn't think Roger's vocals were autotuned I felt the opposite, I found Roger's autotuned vocals to sound even worse than Freddie's. Robot Taylor.

Heard the official mix now. I think it's pretty good. I haven't compared it to the original version yet, but it sounds clean and punchy. It doesn't seem to have the 'meat' that the clip of Liar has, but I like the drum sound and I can't hear any pitch correction, but then I can't hear it anyway.
One thing that's always niggled me is that couldn't Brian have left the Echoplex alone for once and just done a pure balls out rock'n'roll solo?
So this is also a first for Queen - their shortest ever 'single', and the first to feature Roger on lead vocals. It'll be interesting to see if they do another dog's breakfast of a video, and what Freddie is doing in it.

Are you sure you're not just looking for reasons to 'repair' the vocals? I also listened to your mix and I can't fault it but I also can't tell any difference with the vocal.

If it'd be possible for us to cobble the good bits of a remix in with the rest of the original mix, it could be quite something! A standalone remix though? Can see it doing more harm than good in my opinion...

I also listened to your mix and I can't fault it but I also can't tell any difference with the vocal. Nah, I noticed it even on a casual listen. Pitch correction is at its worst when the original note is further away from the correction, and those specific moments are where it's at its worst. It's nowhere near as bad as the pitch correction on Roger's vocals on 'Doing All Right revisited', but it's definitely actively distracting to me. I'm not the only one too, the vast majority of people in Gregsynth's discord server generally agree.

No, it's you inserting semantics. If you're a serious Queen fan and you think a bit of pitch correction outweighs the fact that over an hour of 50+ year old music is being heard for the first time, then why are you even here ? A treasure trove of music history from the early seventies is about to be opened up, and the fact that you have not even inferred a single positive thing about this while overtly defending the negativity is quite telling. I just took time out of my day to scan all 31 pages of this thread, and there's not a peep out of you about the things that are good. At the risk of sounding like your therapist: why are you so preoccupied with giving a microphone to people who are more interested in the negative aspects of something than the positive aspects ? What is your horse in this race ? I feel like I'm becoming a broken record, and that people like you and pg are here primarily to be contrarians and breed chaos. And if I'm wrong, then here's a golden opportunity for the both of you to clear the air and convince me and the rest of this community otherwise. I don't really care about pitch correction. I doubt I could hear the pitch correction. With 62 year old ears, a sup-par musical education, and right hemisphere the size of a raisin, am I "qualified" to offer an educated assessment regarding the sound quality of this release? However I did mention in this topic that I purchased the mp3 version of this box set even though I am not a serious Queen fan. Finally, I "apologize" for doing a piss-poor job of breeding chaos.

I like it. It sounds cool, in ya face. I don’t feel the need to nitpick this one. Just sounds kind of like a classic Roger NOTW era Queen song.

I genuinely can't hear it. I love being deaf, stupid and oblivious. It's bliss. Well, I play over 10 instruments and I produce music, so I'm obviously going to be more susceptible to stuff like this. I watched that 'Joker Folie a Deux' film that recently came out, and holy crap the pitch correction on the Joker's voice was driving me mad.

I don´t know how many song they have in their archives. But if they would have done things in the same vain than FM Box things would be different with me.
About the EJ thing....Agree with you . Here in Spain we say "You shouldn't give daisies to pigs"
Sorry, Antonio. I have no intention of generating controversy with you but I am surprised that you say "you shouldn't give daisies to pigs". In your last comments you say that "Queen's releases between 1997 and 2006 are rubbish" and "you haven't bought any Queen item since 2004". You have also shown obvious disdain for The Miracle box set, News of the world box set, Rainbow and other releases that have taken place over the last 10 years. Do you think Elton John's box has daisies inside? What do you think the Queen boxes contain?
As I said...Take the FM Box as basis. Make something like that. And i would have been happy (then). I´m sure they could have released 3/4 boxes with just outtakes like the Rarities sessions of FM Box. If fact they´re doing it...Every box contains 2 CD with outtakes, singles/live versions, instrumentals...Here you are at least for 30 CDs...More or less....3/4 boxes...Flash won´t have many outtakes but The Miracle or The Works....I´m sure there are a few things to see the light of the day.
Anyway as I already said too, now it´s late for me. I understand that there will be people who don´t like that or won´t understand me, but in the end...I don´t mind...
I can´t understand how old fans are ignored in terms of good releases and they still buying anything that puts on the sleeve "Queen" A quick bit: The BTTL box for example ...Brian was laughing at you...He got some critics and the AW was a little bit better...
PD: The EJ Box contained a big collection of demos plus all B-Sides only released over the years on 7" (with some exceptions from 1997 to 2004 which were obviously released on CD Single). It was not the perfect release since at least two cds for me were useless but the other 5 CD and the marvellous book were great.

The FM box, the Roger box and the Rainbow box were worth the money for me. I bought the "cheap" 2 CD versions of On Air, Hammersmith, The Miracle, BttL & AW because I thought the box sets were overpriced. I bought the cheap Queen I mp3 "box" because I thought the physical box set was overpriced. I just purchased the NotW box set "on sale" for $112, even though I still thought it was not enough value for the money. The only semi-worthwhile "box" stuff that I feel that I am missing out on is the "bonus" live disk from the On Air box set, but I have plenty of unofficial "bootleg" live downloads from QueenChat ...

I'm one of those who does not understand you. It seems to me that you are disrespectful to those who decide to buy any product that has to do with Queen. If you allow me, I will answer you: * You say Brian May was laughing at me when the "Back to the Light" box set went on sale. No, he's not laughing at anyone. He puts a record on sale and everyone who is going to buy it knows the content of the record. There is no scam, nor is there deception, nor is there anything like that. * You say that between 1997-2006 rubbish was published. If my memory serves me correctly, in those years they released "Queen Rocks", "Electric fire", "Another world", "Furia", "GH3", "Wembley (DVD)", "Live at the bowl", "Greatest Video Hits (DVD)". etc It seems to me that GH3 is absolute rubbish and the worst release in Queen history, the rest is not. Those other albums are excellent to me. Special mention to "Electric fire" and "Another world" albums, that I enjoyed almost like any Queen album. Those albums and DVDs are anything but rubbish. * You talk about "FM Box" again, but you don't take into account that 25 years have passed since then. In the 90s we were all hungry for any material that had to do with Queen because we wanted more after Freddie's death and the release of "Made in heaven". That's why you have good memories of Freddie's box. If that same box set, THE SAME ONE, were released today, I have no doubt that you would spit on it, just as you have done on the "News of the world" and "The Miracle" box sets. You would despise it because you are full, you no longer have an appetite, your belly is full. The problem is not in Queen's releases but in your attitude when listening to those albums. What would you think if "The Miracle" box set had been released in 1999? Would you have the same lackadaisical opinion that you have now? I insist on what I said in a previous post. Free and unlimited music downloading has hurt all of us. If we all do like you, who download all the Queen albums released since 2004, there would be no more releases because no one would buy them. Those of us who buy Queen albums are the ones who make it so that you can download them for free. Don't say those who buy a Queen album are stupid.

Also, how do you personally quantify the alleged ’huge’ backlash?? Lastly, I love these 2 remixes. They sound miles better which was the whole intention of the artists. AND THE ORIGINAL MIXES ARE STILL AVAILABLE!! (Sorry, not sorry, for shouting)

Comments had to be turned off on promotional posts for TNCD because of the pitch correction backlash, and people saying the drums were "fake" (stupid and ignorant), and the backlash got even stronger after the AI music video for TNCD. Obviously they can't just cancel an entire single after the vinyl is pressed, and everything's all said and done. What I mean by what I said, is that maybe they're quieting the launch of MTRNR to not expose the upcoming boxset to further criticism before its release, as MTRNR still features pitch correction.

The differences between the old and new mix of Modern Times Rock 'n' Roll aren't as immediately obvious as they were with The Night Comes Down.
Perhaps controversially, I've always thought the drums are fairly repetitive and dull on the studio version of MTRnR, both in terms of what's being played and how they're mixed. As a result, I think the new drum sound fits this song much better than TNCD. I wouldn't say it's better or worse, but the issue of comparatively "distant" and "mono" drums that I described in post #701 isn't a problem here, as I always thought they sounded like that anyway.
The bass guitar is less prominent on the new mix, but it's not a big difference.
Brian's guitar sounds cleaner than the original mix, but I'm not sure which version I prefer yet.
Roger's vocal is more prominent in the mix. I think the pitch correction was pointless, yet again.
Overall, I don't think this mix is drastically different. If some of the people who can't detect pitch correction did a blind comparison, I don't think they would know which version is which. It's Pepsi vs Coke, all over again!

I really fail to hear AT. I've seen that video comparing TNCD and when listening to specific bits one after another, both accurately labeled as "original" and "autotuned", I could definitely tell. But while just listening to the song, I just can't tell it's been tampered. That being said, the new MTRnR mix is somewhat different. On my first listen I found both the drums and vocals much clearer. I feel this version "breathes" more, while the original was very muffled in comparison. I can actually believe this sound is what they had in mind when they first recorded the song.

Between 2011 & 2024, 2011 Modern Times sounded boxy, while 2024 sounded... well, "live". At least the vocals & guitars have a little less reverb unlike before.
