but it's still a terrible analogy, because (either way) when you order a meal in a restaurant, you don't get to supervise the preparation and cooking of the meal. Actually you make the analogy sound even more compelling, since we don't get to supervise the preparation of the box set either. LMAO TRUE

Seems like the overall vibe of this release is that Queen (I) was originally a compromised production. They were justly proud of it at the time but we've also been hearing about how they always disliked the drum sounds (and also some of the guitar sounds) for donkey's years. That they included what was essentially a demo recording (albeit a professionally recorded one) on the record is also testament to this. And there's also a 'missing' track, supposedly (again) because of dissatisfaction with the sound mix.
So a degree of meddling is not icing on the cake (whether you like the icing is another question) but really, this time it is the cake. On The Miracle it was the alt versions that were the draw - this time around we're getting something unprecedented as regards the original album itself.
So will it become the 'go-to' for Queen I, or a novelty alt-version? Time will tell.. I hope TNCD is an aberration of sorts, regarding autotune, and tbh it is the only song on the album (the only Queen recording in fact) where I've knowingly detected Freddie be a bit 'pitchy'. It never bothered me, but I always noticed it. I guess the boys did, too.
Anyway. Will Queen II get a similar revamp? There's an awful lot that could be aurally untangled on that record (FTS in particular). Well, that's next year's discussion (or not).
As regards the rest of the discussion, yes it's too expensive, yes the live Rainbow tracks re-releases are annoying, yes I want Imperial College in toto, etc.
Oh and leave Hot Space alone, you monsters.

We have had around 22 pages about autotune/pitch control , surely we can try and move the conversation on a little bit by now. Saying that you have to expect to pay top price for Queen Box Sets because this is Queen seems a little bit arrogant to me. How about giving something back to the fan's who brought the original Queen album back in 1973 and all the fans that have supported them all these years. I wonder he comes up with the pricing structure for this Box Set ? Do Brian & Roger have a say in that matter ? I doubt it. For every 1 post about pitch correction, there's about 7 more that say "STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT THE PITCH CORRECTION !!!! BLINDLY SUPPORT THE BAND !!!" and it's just as bad, no, worse. Look, there is absolutely nothing wrong with loving the band, their music, and this boxset. I personally do. I'm excited as fuck for this boxset. But there's also nothing wrong with critiquing a product that you're paying over 200 dollars for. If my food was served and it had hair and fingernails in it, I wouldn't just chow down on that food because I didn't want to hurt the chef's feelings.
Agree
There are people who will find any reason to defend whatever complain that they read about the band. It seems that Queen can´t do anything wrong, and if so, ALWAYS there is an argument that invalid the complain ...
I consider myself a Queen fan, but not a blind-one. They have released tons of crap the last 20 years and it won´t happen anything if I say that.
Are there people who think different than me? It´s absolutely OK. My life will go on. i´m not gonna spend a single second if anyone has a different opinion than mine. I just live my life. Is people happy with this autotune thing in the recent releases? Nice...

Nobody discusses about hangman live 1976, Mad the Swine in right place of the album and so on. Only autotune and price. I'm sure that'll change once it's actually released. Naturally people can only talk about the things they've heard so far.

I don't honestly think there's been anyone "blindly supporting the band", in fact, there's plenty of acknowledgement on these boards that not everything they've done has been perfect, and some of it has been pretty dire. Look at the reaction to the umpteenth re-re-re release of Greatest Hits, as one example. Personally, I just feel that one bit of autotune was jumped on literally minutes after the TNCD remix was heard, and the focus was drawn to that, with the rest of the track virtually being ignored. The same thing happened when Rainbow was released and we heard FFMS live for the first time, not even knowing that it was ever performed on stage before then. A treasure was unearthed and all some folks could talk about was a second of pitch correction. The forthcoming Queen I box set will contain material we could never have dreamed of hearing a few years ago, and it will be a shame if it's pulled to pieces within a few hours of release because some of the tracks may have been tinkered with. The band and production team obviously must think they're improving the end product - I'm sure they're not simply applying autotune to annoy a group of fans that pick up on these things.

The band and production team obviously must think they're improving the end product - I'm sure they're not simply applying autotune to annoy a group of fans that pick up on these things. That's a very fair and balanced approach to this. But the reality is - autotune is completely unnecessary on 50 year old music. Even the greatest singers ever didn't always sing perfectly in pitch, so nobody is going to think Freddie Mercury was a bad singer because he was occasionally imperfect and human. Even at his worst concerts, he still almost always sang in pitch. This box set is not going to negatively impact Queen's musical legacy in any way. But by applying autotune, it's going to sour people about Queen Productions as an entity. There is no net positive that I can see from them going out of their way to use it. I cannot imagine a single person thinking "oh, thank god they autotuned that." All that said - we're about to be beneficiaries of about an hour of previously unheard Queen music from 1970 to 1973, and I'm sure the significance of this is not lost on any of us. No matter what state these tracks will be in, it is a massive privilege that we'll be able to hear them. And thus I'm sure this thread will become a far more positive place in four weeks' time.

I've openly criticised the band (and many of their decisions) for 40+ years. Let's face it, (for me) everything from the Game to AKoM was part of a sliding scale of disappointment to dross. As regards TNCD, I'm not criticising a tweak until i hear the whole package (Oct 25th), because, well it [one tweak] really doesn't harm anything at all, does it? I still have the original CD, so I can listen to that if I prefer it. it's not as if one bit of autotune removes every instance of the original release from existence is it? I'm really looking forward to Oct 25th. now, if they skip II, SHA or Races (boxsets) to accommodate HS, Works or AKoM, then I WILL be extremely pissed and even more vocal in my complaints.

I totally I agree and reminds me , the disappointments from various things Queen did. I remember, I was expecting The Moracle to be a more rock orientated album since the first single and its b/sides were great. I didn't like its pop side Queen have gives us few good things since 2011 and very few since 1995. There was always criticism by everyone including me. My last was about FIA lacking climax. I find very wrong criticise a release, before it is out. As few of us have said the original album is still around.

So, what's with the "What...?" You seem to be disagreeing, then backing up my point, which is that we do have criticisms here.

Using headphones, earbuds and my car stereo - I've now listened to The Night Comes Down remix around 50 times. Here are my thoughts: I still think the vocal pitch correction was pointless.
Overall, I prefer the guitars on the 2024 mix. They sound clearer and brighter, but not polished too much. The bass guitar is less prominent on the 2024 mix and I think the song loses some punchiness as a result. The drums have lost some fidelity because of the added reverb, as well as sounding more distant. It sounds like we're listening to Roger play behind a closed door, rather than being in the room with him. Additionally, the 2024 mix doesn't pan left and right as much as the original mix. Or to put it another way, it's more mono and less stereo than the original mix. In my opinion, it's less interesting to listen to as a result. Compare the drums from 30 seconds onwards on both versions for an obvious example:
In conclusion, my dream version of the song would be the original mix, but with the new guitars.

Same thoughts here I didn't notice any pitch correction or autotune (in other words - that something is (very) bad or wrong with Freddie's voice). I even don't understand exactly what it is. I bet (OK - I suppose) 99 percent of all Queen fans didn't or wont notice either. And 99 percent of them won't care at all.

So in the last few weeks we've learned: - that The Night Comes Down was going to be the 3rd single from the album - that She Makes Me was written in 1970 - the setlist of the Imperial College 1970-08-23 concert - early rundown for the Sheer Heart Attack album - that Freddie wrote a song called Somebody Tell Me Now for the SHA album - that there wasn't a concert on 1970-07-18, and it's in fact 1971-07-18 - meaning that the plaque at Imperial College unveiled by Brian & Roger in 2013 is wrong - Queen began the work on the first album in May 1972 - See What A Fool I've Been was played and recorded at De Lane Lea Studios - that for the Night Comes Down the band "smuggled in their demo multi-track tape in a newly labelled ‘Trident’ box in order to mix the song for the album" - De Lane Lea sessions took place between November 1971 and January 1972 - Hangman was Free-inspired, and according to official press release "was never recorded in the studio” - Queen were playing Morning Sun (a cover of a 1970 pop hit) and Please Don't Tease (a Cliff Richard song from 1960) in 1970. What a time to be a Queen fan. I can't wait to hear the new remix and everything else. 2 tracks from Imperial Colege is unbelievable in itself. It's only their 3rd or 4th concert, and it predates the earliest circulating live material by more than 3 years... Sure, I'd love to hear the entire concert. The Rainbow 74 tracks are disappointing. Not only it was released in (almost) complete form already, but it's not even the Queen I Tour. If they didn't deem the Imperial College show as good enough, they could've released Golders Green Hippodrome. While it's great to see Hangman being released in any form, we have a decent tape from the same tour - Milwaukee show, which happened only 10 days before San Diego. But I don't mind, I'm sure that San Diego performance was equally brilliant, and obviously it will sound much better than Milwaukee. Doing All Right was performed one day before San Diego (in Santa Monica) and we have a very good tape of that show already. BBC sessions bring nothing new, but it was only logical to include them in the box set. What surpises me is the fact that Queen official channels are flooded by comments saying how wrong it is to autotune Freddie's voice. It's literally more than half of all the comments. People are very aware of these things. I love the new look of the back cover. It never looked better. That's a huge improvement. I saw the official AI video for The Night Comes Down as soon as it was posted, and before seeing the reaction here and everywhere else. Well... personally I thought the video was disgusting. I'll just leave it at that. I can't wait to see the book. It looks somewhat similar to the Sotheby's Freddie Auction Book, and I'm happy with that. Makes me wonder if Queen managed to buy some early tracklists, sketches etc. at the auction. Some of the items seem to be included in the new book. It looks like the book is well prepared and organised. I assume they didn't include the details such as the session dates, which would've been wonderful, but surely there's a lot of good and rare info and visuals in the book, and to me it's one of the most valuable things in the box set. It looks to me like Queen try to follow The Beatles in recent years. Perhaps it started with the Get Back documentary. Brian commented on that, and I seem to remember he specifically mentioned how it made him look different at his own and Queen's legacy. It opened his eyes on how valuable and fun the archive released can be. Now it looks like every Queen box set is better than the previous one. Can only hope this trend will be continued. And then there are promo videos. So far not to be seen anywhere. But on the official website there are these 2 stills, looking not bad at all: which surely means they are going to upload the remastered videos on the official YouTube channel pretty soon. All in all I'm very excited. While the box set is not perfect, it's much better than expected. October 25 can't come soon enough.

It does seem to be following a trend where each box set is slightly better than the last one. So, does this mean that when they've done them all, they'll go back and do them all again?! Another NOTW box, this time including Houston? 😆 I'm just hoping I live to see all of them once, and it would also be nice if they were all done while Brian and Roger are still around to oversee them.

3rd single? Not sure about this. The Game was the first album that had an ACTUAL 3rd single in the primary market (EP was not a single), milking albums for single releases just wasn't a thing in the same way in the 70s.
Hence no follow up to SSOR to maintain "momentum" when they get a top ten hit....

Chopin1995 The Golders Green was released in 2016 part of BBC boxset and it was almost completed minus one or two cover songs due to copyright. Every note, sheet music, Queen related document in Sobery's Auctions was scanned and got copyright .

The release dates of singles and their territories around that time being: ♦ Keep Yourself Alive (July '73 - Worldwide) ♦ Liar (Feb '74 - USA/New Zealand) ♦ Seven Seas of Rhye (Feb '74 - UK) (June '74 - USA, Worldwide) So, with only ONE single from the LP everywhere except USA/New Zealand - that would make TNCD the 2nd single almost everywhere! Secondly, that's a very tight gap between the Liar and SSoR release dates for another (3rd) single USA single.

Well Queen filmed promo videos for Keep Yourself Alive and Liar around the same time in 1973 didn't they? Wasn't it August? So maybe Liar was intended to be the second single in UK and other territories later on in 1973 which leaves The Night Comes Down as the third single early in 1974? Seven Seas Of Rhye was rush released as a single just because of Top Of The Pops having a gap to fill so Queen got the job. It does make you wonder if they weren't planning on releasing it for another couple of weeks during the Queen II Tour? I guess technically the Liar single didn't really happen as such and was released in the US in February '74 ahead of the American tour just to see if it got the band some momentum and attention. The band have spoken about how they didn't have much control of that single but if it was going to be a single in the UK I'm sure they would've decided an edit as surely there would've been one.

3rd single? Not sure about this. So in the last few weeks we've learned: - that The Night Comes Down was going to be the 3rd single from the album i'm not sure how/when. No, this was direct information from Roger - 3:54.

No, this was direct information from Roger - 3:54. Yes, Roger didsay that, but it's actually incorrect - that was my point. ♦ UK/Rest of World = there was NO 2nd single from the album - it wasn't a "technical non-release" it was an actual non-release. that being the case, there couldn't have been a planned 3rd? It's not possible to plan a 3rd anything, until you have a 2nd. ♦ USA/New Zealand = If TNCD was to be released as a single (3rd from LP) it would've had to be squeezed in between Feb & June 74. they may have had ideas depending upon success/outcome of other single releases, but these could be nothing more than if/maybes

Roger said so in his interview with Jo Whiley and he does have quite a good memory. I've never thought that was the case. Plus, as Martin says, there's no release window. They were recording Queen II in Aug 73, so if they HAD released even a second single from Queen I, they'd have started to feel that the Q2 material was getting stale, compounding their perceived issue with QI ("representing at last....")
