I like the new mix quite a lot, it feels like an improvement. My only criticism is that the piano has been completely buried and is barely audible now.

I'm one of those who does not understand you. It seems to me that you are disrespectful to those who decide to buy any product that has to do with Queen. If you allow me, I will answer you: * You say Brian May was laughing at me when the "Back to the Light" box set went on sale. No, he's not laughing at anyone. He puts a record on sale and everyone who is going to buy it knows the content of the record. There is no scam, nor is there deception, nor is there anything like that. * You say that between 1997-2006 rubbish was published. If my memory serves me correctly, in those years they released "Queen Rocks", "Electric fire", "Another world", "Furia", "GH3", "Wembley (DVD)", "Live at the bowl", "Greatest Video Hits (DVD)". etc It seems to me that GH3 is absolute rubbish and the worst release in Queen history, the rest is not. Those other albums are excellent to me. Special mention to "Electric fire" and "Another world" albums, that I enjoyed almost like any Queen album. Those albums and DVDs are anything but rubbish. * You talk about "FM Box" again, but you don't take into account that 25 years have passed since then. In the 90s we were all hungry for any material that had to do with Queen because we wanted more after Freddie's death and the release of "Made in heaven". That's why you have good memories of Freddie's box. If that same box set, THE SAME ONE, were released today, I have no doubt that you would spit on it, just as you have done on the "News of the world" and "The Miracle" box sets. You would despise it because you are full, you no longer have an appetite, your belly is full. The problem is not in Queen's releases but in your attitude when listening to those albums. What would you think if "The Miracle" box set had been released in 1999? Would you have the same lackadaisical opinion that you have now? I insist on what I said in a previous post. Free and unlimited music downloading has hurt all of us. If we all do like you, who download all the Queen albums released since 2004, there would be no more releases because no one would buy them. Those of us who buy Queen albums are the ones who make it so that you can download them for free. Don't say those who buy a Queen album are stupid.
About the BTTL Box.
Brian talked many time about the box and the stuff on it and and and...In the end, nothing. If you like that box, it´s OK. For me (should I say again for me?) Brian laughed at you. Yes you can buy it or not, but you get the point.
About the rubbish
GH3, collaborations with 5ive and others, the Paul Rodgers thing, the ANATO 30 anniversary was a joke for me, Queen Rocks only one real new song and other with overdubbed drums, Furia...For me these things were rubbish and if you add that the promised Anthology never appeared, I got tired of collecting.
About the "you no longer have an appetite, your belly is full" ...
I didn´t know that you were inside my head to KNOW FOR SURE the reality...Come on, accept another opinion. I can accept yours. I don´t mind whatever you do with you Queen-fandom...If you buy 30 o 50 copies of the same thing or just one...Really I don´t mind...Everybody is free to do whatever they want.
About "Those of us who buy Queen albums are the ones who make it so that you can download them for free. Don't say those who buy a Queen album are stupid."
Not really...The digital copies sent from Artists/Bands companies are which are shared even 1 or 2 days before the exact date of release. Check some Russian websites and you´ll see it...
And finally "If we all do like you," Don´t spend your time worrying on this. You DO know that´s not like that, so you can breath with no problems. (But as a sentence is a cool one if you use it on this like that, or when someone doesn´t want to have children or...Yes...A cool one...)

The differences between the old and new mix of Modern Times Rock 'n' Roll aren't as immediately obvious as they were with The Night Comes Down.
Perhaps controversially, I've always thought the drums are fairly repetitive and dull on the studio version of MTRnR, both in terms of what's being played and how they're mixed. As a result, I think the new drum sound fits this song much better than TNCD. I wouldn't say it's better or worse, but the issue of comparatively "distant" and "mono" drums that I described in post #701 isn't a problem here, as I always thought they sounded like that anyway.
The bass guitar is less prominent on the new mix, but it's not a big difference.
Brian's guitar sounds cleaner than the original mix, but I'm not sure which version I prefer yet.
Roger's vocal is more prominent in the mix. I think the pitch correction was pointless, yet again.
Overall, I don't think this mix is drastically different. If some of the people who can't detect pitch correction did a blind comparison, I don't think they would know which version is which. It's Pepsi vs Coke, all over again!
As it happens, I think Pepsi is entirely different to Coke! 😄 To be fair, I haven't tasted either in over a decade... I always preferred Dr Pepper.

I really fail to hear AT. I've seen that video comparing TNCD and when listening to specific bits one after another, both accurately labeled as "original" and "autotuned", I could definitely tell. But while just listening to the song, I just can't tell it's been tampered. That being said, the new MTRnR mix is somewhat different. On my first listen I found both the drums and vocals much clearer. I feel this version "breathes" more, while the original was very muffled in comparison. I can actually believe this sound is what they had in mind when they first recorded the song. I can also believe this mix is closer to what they originally wanted. The problem is that what you feel is "muffled", some might feel as "warmth". They can never please everyone, but I think they have a better chance with this mix.
It all goes back to the Pepsi vs Coke comparison. There are differences between the two, but at least they're similar enough that if you like one, you can probably tolerate the other. The mixes of TNCD are more like Pepsi vs Sprite. Both are beverages, but there's a greater chance that fans of one will hate the other.
I feel like I need to brush my teeth after all this sugary drink talk.

With the greatest of respect to both parties, I think we must have reached the point where this would be better continued by PM.
Getting back to the point of the thread, until it’s pointed out to me I remain blissfully ignorant of the changes made to the vocals, I really do.
I think this is the best release in the last umpteen years and am buzzing for the release.
Like a previous poster said, I have no idea what I’ll listen to first. Maybe the 1970 tracks, who knows.
And for those who can hear and despise the vocal tweaks, etc, there is always Miles’ planned work which will no doubt perfectly bridge the old with the new for those that need it.
Peace all..

I'm not sure this has been mentioned but Roger is going to be in the first episode of Jools Holland talking about the Queen I Box Set. Apparently he's going to sing John Lennon's Jealous Guy too. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00248kc

Having heard Modern Times many times over the last few weeks - as you will see why below - and now the 2024 mix the vocal parts that sound off and autotuned are there in the 70s version and prob Roger going off tune and a fix at the time. Side by side with ears I cant hear anywork on the vocals (other than different effects). Could this mix be they did not have all the parts of the original and they have seperated the parts?? Im just guessing as I thought the end off notes would have been prime fixing - unless Roger said no to autotune on his vocals. Anyway I have made a video for the new 2024 mix and this will divide people but unless there is footage of Roger singing this in the 70s or he wants to film now this is the next best thing and made with love and energy for the group. My boy only hears new music with his eyes so we will watch this together and if anyone else watches it or god forbid likes it its a bonus. The next generation finding Queen which is what this box set and new mix is about I guess. Enjoy

Dr. Pepper: You and me both!
I also agree about the mix and its new presence having an energy the band were likely hoping for. The loss of the "warmth", similar to TNCD, is probably due to a lot of frequency isolation and giving the instruments/vocals more distinctive space to breathe, but still sit comfortably in the mix. It's helping some elements stand out more (drums, vocals) but seems to be pushing out/down some of the guitars, bass, piano, etc. A tradeoff, I suppose. But there's a nice punchiness and vibrancy to this new mix that's attractive to me. It doesn't sound too compressed, and there are still some nice dynamics. Even more than pitch correction, I was afraid for overly-compressed songs that lost all of their crescendos, etc. But so far, it's not too crazy.
I'm enjoying this new mix; even as it employs a touch of pitch correction. The correction, to my highly-sensitive ears, isn't as immediately obvious as TNCD; and the original integrity of Roger's vocals seems to be more intact. That could also be because he's speaking some of these lyrics, and I'm sure they simply left those alone (save other EQ optimization).
I'm anxious to hear what they did with the other album tracks...

It's probably a matter of taste, but I feel more agressive rock songs like this one really benefit from more clarity for the instruments. I like my hard rock/metal drums mixed like Enter Sandman. I'd miss the warmth if they tampered with songs that were definitely "warm" by design - like several of their songs with several layers of vocals and guitar. I would never call All Dead, All Dead "muffled" and definitely would've gone with "warm". On that note, unlike many people, I prefer the original The Long and Winding Road with Phil Spector's wall of sound, rather than the Let It Be... Naked version. The original takes me to a tiny, cozy room on a cold day, while the newer version takes me to a somewhat empty room with boring, geometric and monochromatic furniture.

Don't disagree with you there, having a nice 'edge' with bright trebles and snap on guitar and drums is a welcome feature in a hard rocking number.
Love your descriptions about the 'rooms' and their atmosphere in the different versions of "The Long and Winding Road". I need to go back and compare those mixes.

I felt the opposite, I found Roger's autotuned vocals to sound even worse than Freddie's. Robot Taylor. Are you sure you're not just looking for reasons to 'repair' the vocals? I also listened to your mix and I can't fault it but I also can't tell any difference with the vocal. It's a generational difference. A ton of young people can hear pitch correction even when they haven't heard an existing non-pitch corrected version for comparison, and they can hear AI music on first exposure as well. Rick Beato has done many videos on his YouTube channel where he speaks about his kids and their friends and how this is commonplace now. The kids are alright.

We might be guests here not "paying customers" but its far more entertaining to watch the critics than listen to mods trying to shapoe the discussion their way.

Obviously they can't just cancel an entire single after the vinyl is pressed, and everything's all said and done. So, where is the vinyl? It doesn't seem to be available on the QOL Store. Maybe they've just released this as an album teaser without actually calling it a 'single'? Thats how it feels to me as well. Of course, it's a matter of definition and semantics, in these digital days the definition of "single" has definitely blurred, but I would definitely call this more of an "album teaser", while TNCD was clearly a single.

with the release of MTRnR [all 01:48 of it] as the promotional single for the boxset, are we heading into Ramones' song lengths? If so, we can expect the next "boxset singles" to be: II - Nevermore [01:18] SHA - Dear Friends [01:08] Opera - Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon [01:07] Races - Overture [01:02] Jazz - In Only Seven Days [02:29] Flash - The Ring [00:57] MIH - Yeah [00.00.4] By comparison to the others (above), The "single" from Jazz could be considered a QPL 12" extd release

Only question is, would any part of the single word require autotune?

Here is a video I have done with the original on the right and 2024 mix on the left. To me the vocals in the new mix are the same with just a tweak of time on one line and less reverb. What was done to Rogers vocals in the 70s remains and nothing has been changed and have said before maybe as that's how Roger wanted it in 2024. I think we will get more nice things from this remixed album - like the new vocal take on one line we heard in Liar - than what might stand out to some ears (and some are looking for things) as bad. Yes The night comes down has put some off with what they have done with Freddies vocals but (I hope) this is the only song. We shall all see/hear on the 25th. Enjoy.

and what about Made In Heaven? - surely the promo single has to be "Yeah" [00m 00.4s] d'you know, if QPL did that with MIH, I'd smile a lot about it. Only question is, would any part of the single word require autotune? 😄 It will count as Hot Space single too, is it from Action this Day? And of course Day Oh from Live Aid or Live Magic neither are tracks in their own right, are they?

Who does the 'Look out!' at the end? John Anthony, obviously the co-producer for the album. I wonder if he's ever talked about it, he did say he did stuff with Brian and Roger recently. Whether we'll see stuff from it, we'll have to wait and see...

I thought this was quite a common fact, no idea where it stemmed from but it seems to be a lot on websites and maybe even books. None of the official releases mention JA singing on it, but if someone can confirm where this was first mentioned, that would be great!

I've heard this so many times that it has become absolute fact for me, but I couldn't tell you where I read it first! I have that 'fact' in my notes too, and had to backtrack where I read it first. Found these two links that show it in the credits, but there are no additional notes to confirm. www.queenpedia.com/index.php?title=Modern_Times_Rock%27n%27Rollwww.queensongs.info/studio-info-page/modern-times-rock-n-rollFinally listened to the updated mix on proper headphones and must say, the energy is really nice. I enjoyed it the other day, and now even more so. It's nice to hear Roger clearer and very present: I can actually understand most of what he's singing now. And I still think any pitch correction was done with a lighter hand here. There's nothing glaringly obvious to me.

with the release of MTRnR [all 01:48 of it] as the promotional single for the boxset, are we heading into Ramones' song lengths? If so, we can expect the next "boxset singles" to be: II - Nevermore [01:18] SHA - Dear Friends [01:08] Opera - Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon [01:07] Races - Overture [01:02] Jazz - In Only Seven Days [02:29] Flash - The Ring [00:57] MIH - Yeah [00.00.4] By comparison to the others (above), The "single" from Jazz could be considered a QPL 12" extd release Yeah is a guaranteed global smash
