Calling the album "Queen 1" instead of "Queen" just seems wrong to be me. They should have kept it's original tittle. That's technically what it was called in Japan back then, at least colloquially. I don't feel too strongly about it either way, myself. Where did you hear that? In Japan the album was called 戦慄の王女 translated as ‘Princess of Fear’.

Aren't we all? I've been intrigued for a long time especially when Roger says how Freddie sounded like a sheep; i.e. he had the power but not the voice. You can listen to the Ibex performance from 1969 already....

If SWAFIB is suffixed "De Lane Lea Test Session"...doesn't that make it part of the De Lane Lea Demo tape?
I think it's just my organisational nature, but surely ALL the stuff from De Lane Lea (the 5 tracks, the two alternate takes and SWAFIB) would JUST ABOUT fit on a single disc?

It's the little things like knowing for sure now See What A Fool I've Been existed early on in Queen history. I wonder what else we'll discover. I'm excited! If I am not mistaken, we already knew this for decades. Brian said in the early 00's that indeed this one had been performed by Smile. (After the famous story that goes with Brian adapting it from a blues track that he heard on the radio in 1967 / 1968 and decades later he would actually learn who was the original performer as well as the song title, thanks to a fan who provided him with this information).

I love the presentation of the set. It's about as perfect to me as you can get to visually represent the album. The only thing I'm really disappointed in is that they didn't include the US Single mix of Liar. I know it's not a great edit and the band didn't care for it. But it was an official release and I wish they had included it for the sake of completeness.
The remix of The Night Comes Down sounds amazing except for that snare sound. Maybe it's because we've had 50 years of hearing the original mix that makes it so jarring. But, saying that, that's what I've loved about Giles Martin's remixes of The Beatles albums. He created a new, modern stereo remix and everything sounds so much more clear and defined compared to the original mixes. But the overall sound still sounds like it was recorded at the time it was actually recorded. The drums being so radically changed on The Night Comes Down seems revisionist to make it seem like the track was recorded now instead of the 70's.

This is super exciting! I thought for sure that this would be the first physical boxset I'd have bought in years but then I checked iTunes and it was only $9.99 for the 6 disc Collector's Edition. I don't know if that's a mistake or if they'll change it after the fact or what. It'll take me a few listens to warm up to the new mix of TNCD but I do like the "room" they've added. I was worried the remixes would simply have a bunch of reverb added on like the recent live recordings. Glad to be wrong. The fact that they've remixed what are essentially bonus tracks too is impressive. Too bad Queen are following suit with other releases by having the surround option streaming-only. At least we'll have one though! I was expecting recycled live stuff but, wow, that much from Rainbow was surprising. Well worth it for the four new song, I think.
I can't wait to hear the rest of this stuff!
Question for folks in the US who have pre-ordered stuff from QOL before: How close to the release date is it usually delivered? I'll be out of of town (ELO in LA!) on the 25th and wouldn't want this sitting by the front door.

Other than the pointless pitch correction, I'm not being negative, as I think this could be a very good release. However, from a drum point of view, I'd just like to say that I think The Night Comes Down was a poor choice for the first example of the new remix. I've never had a problem with the original drum sound on that particular track and I suspect the people complaining about the new drums feel the same way. The drums on Great King Rat, on the other hand, might be improved by the new drum mix. If they wanted to get people excited, it might have been better to showcase that, instead. Exactly!! The dead drum sound was Trident Studios trademark. The Night Comes Down comes from De Lane Lea sessions. They didn't have the same problem with the drum sound. Not official, but here's what I got out of the Trident drums last year using Rock Band stems.

And Mercury even called it that on stage between songs when they played there in 1975/76. The early Japanese releases had some retitles in Japanese-- for example, Keep Yourself Alive was ”炎のロックンロール", "Flaming Rock 'n' Roll", and Now I'm Here was "誘惑のロックンロール", "Temptation Rock 'n' Roll". Queen I was indeed released as Princess of Fear, but from what I can tell, they're all mostly referred to by their English titles in the present day since the average Japanese person has so much more exposure to English now. Personally I've always referred to the first album as "Queen I".

Exactly!! The dead drum sound was Trident Studios trademark. The Night Comes Down comes from De Lane Lea sessions. They didn't have the same problem with the drum sound. What a weird choice for the “alternative” single! The whole point of keeping the De Lane Lea version on the album was that they were happy with it. Wouldn’t Liar be the obvious choice seeing as it’s epic production would most easily show off the remix and it already comes with a decent music video!

The Night Comes Down music video: the description on YouTube for the music video says it contains AI to bring photos to life. Oh dear !! That won't be too bad if it's subtle. The end of the "Now and Then" music video did the same with photos, it had the heads move as they came closer to the camera, it wasn't convincing but it wasn't terrible, gave the photos a bit of depth.

From what I looked up iTunes honors the price you preordered for so if it was a mistake it looks like we’re getting it for $9.99. Which is definitely weird as the miracle boxset on iTunes is $39.99

The new generation of Queen fans or listeners are more pop -raidio friendly orientation. They like Body language and Cool Cat , it seems the general buyers orefer more simple structure songs, easyly to digest. Moreover TNCD is deep cut and will be marketed with new video. It is a more friendly to this audience who doesn't have go yet into deep Queen early albums.

Not to be fastidious, but why do we never add release dates to thread titles? It makes it way easier to know when to expect something.
October 25!

The box set is $35.99 on Australian ITunes. I hope you all stole it on US ITunes for $9.99!
I bought the song. Only listened on my phone at work so far. The overall separation is nice, but the drums seem a bit much in places. But if you focus on the drums you can ignore the autotune or whatever vocal treatment it is, which seems quite glaring on a couple of lines.
Excited to hear the whole album, but will it replace the original? Hmm.

I thought I'd been clever in my wording to stop anyone from being nit picky! I thought saying "Queen history" would put in people's heads 1970 onwards, otherwise I could've simply said early on. I just meant SWAFIB being performed by Queen, not Smile. It's first live performance was no later than in 1972 but it's the first time we know it was played by Queen before this. So, that's what I meant knowing when songs were actually first played by "Queen", not Smile or Ibex or whatever!

Pre-ordered it for €150,00 from amazon.fr For that 7 euro difference, I'm not going through all the hassle of canceling and re-ordering. Very excited about the release. Will post my thoughts on it later.

Interesting, the opening drums on TNCD don't have as much impact as the original in my opinion, so out of curiosity, I EQed them to match what's on the original mix. I dig it. What do you think? An idea for those out there who specialize with instrument separation 🤔

Excited to hear the whole album, but will it replace the original? Hmm. For me it will just be a new experience to hear the album in a different way. The original one will still exist and remains in my collection. It is interesting to see though that the original mix is not on any of these reissues. I wonder if they will do the same (for this album at least) as Genesis did in 2007 when they released remixes of all of their albums. All original mixes are now out of print.

Earlier on there was a discussion about a live version of "The Night Comes Down" from Marquee 1972 not being released. Are you certain that there is no recording of it in this 1970 tape? Could they just be withholding it for the time being? So regardless of the fate of the Marquee tape, there is still could be a possibility.

Thnx. That's about €35 cheaper as where I ordered it yesterday, so I cancelled that order and made a new one at Amazon.de for the boxset + 2CD.

Freddie's vocals on TNCD are autotuned It's specially clear to me on the 2:42 to 2:50 mark. Compare it with the original and you'll notice that the lines were a bit flat, and now it's pitch perfect. I like the new sound, but would have preferred if they didn't mess with the pitch, at least not on the original record, the demos are another story. I've only heard the snippet and it sounds bizarrely phrased and "normalized" (if that's still a term used in live audio) It loses the breath of the phrasing. I don't care if it's not as perfect. Just the honest bits. It's probably my favorite track from the debut. I hope this isn't going to be hard (*not what she said)

But if they ARE "holding back" a Marquee tape, that would be just fucking perverse when it would be a better fit for THIS release than re-including the Rainbow tracks.

Can anyone post a source to the new "The Night Comes Down" official mix? I just saw the Spotify fragment and the official video isn't out yet. Every embed I find seems to be some sort of "restoration".
