The mono>stereo AI upmix for Doing All Right in San Diego 1976 is awful. They try to pan the guitar and add effects to it, but the AI model confuses the piano with the guitar, so you get like three pianos playing all at once with with a bit of guitar in it. The vision is totally there- the technology is NOT. Hangman's AI mono>stereo upmix doesn't fare well too well either, but a mono fold-down solves all my problems with it. So I guess that means they don't have a multitrack recording of the San Diego 1976 show, for future release. Or did we know that already?

The only ANATO tour show that has a multitrack is Hammersmith 75, and then Hyde Park but technically that's a whole different tour. San Diego's Soundboard also seems to be fairly low resolution compared to even the usual multitracks like Houston. This one cuts out around 13kHz, when Houston's was 20kHz. I'm pretty sure Sleeping On The Sidewalk was 16 or 17 but I can't remember.

Would the Queen I backing tracks assist in the OG vocal/mixing alterations? Keep Yourself Alive would be an easy fix considering we have the vocal stems. Just a thought

And yes, the classic pitch correction. If only there was someone to fly over the original vocals to the new backing track I haven't got it yet.... There isn't a filter I've found yet that does a perfect job of seperating vocals from the instruments and more often than not you get residual guitar mixed in. It's removeable, but takes a bit more work. And then there's seperating the lead vocal from the backing vocals which, frankly, I think is important so that a new mix of old vox and new instruments can be balanced properly rather than just slapped on. I'm happy to do the seperation work if someone else will do the sync up to the new versions. CMI? Rub? Miles?

Listening to the band swearing their way through the My Fairy King backing track is amazing. Disc 3 is gold. I could listen to this stuff all day.

Are we in agreement that Liar benefited the most from remixing? Oh my god, it felt like listening to a live version! I'm floored!

I'm glad they got the closure they wanted! Blondie's gone Bonzo on this one! And I still haven't got to the sessions or the last 4 tracks of the live disc yet!

Going to check out of reading any more on this thread because it'll be at least a week, maybe two or more before the box set reaches Canada from France and I've spoiled it enough for myself already, BUT, loving how much you guys are finding in there. Can't wait to discover it all myself. Happy listening folks

I'm going through the De Lane Lea demos right now and they sound fantastic, too bad that the vocals got pitch corrected so hard that it seems like they dialed the phaser to 11. I still need some time to get used to the new drum sounds they used in Queen I, though. Happy listening everybody!

it's impressive! Remix well done..for imperial college maybe they should have hired whoever managed to clean up Now and Then by the Beatles, who knows if something more could have been done or maybe it's just a preview because they're still working hard to release a live of just this concert in the near future, who knows.. Anyway if they managed to work so well on Queen I who knows what godness it will be when we'll hear Queen 2

I've fortunately been able to listen to most of the box set now, and I've loved listening to it. Honestly it's made me rekindle my love for the first album. I've secretly loved the songs on the album but without realising it's the sound before which put me off. But there's life to the songs now which has in my mind put the album amongst the band's finest.
The banter I love, honestly I've never heard any of the band speak like this before. Brian calling Freddie by Bulsara and Brian doing some nice guitar twaddles was interrupted by Freddie shouting "shut up Brian!". Even the delicateness of Freddie and Brian speaking during the 1970 concert is so different to anything else I've heard of them in concert.
There's a lot of acoustic guitar in the sessions disc which is amazing as it does put a different light on the songs. It's hard to pick out what the highlight was, I genuinely loved it and can't wait to listen again. I honestly don't care about pitch correction, it's just amazing to have a box set full of gems.

Listening now. Absolutely delighted with what I've heard so far. This is going to make me think about the album in a whole new way.

Just a thought This made me realise I actually have a (super n00b!) question for the folks here who know their way around remixing/improving stuff: assuming we have the original mix of a given song and its backing track (with the same mix), would it be possible to get the isolated vocal "by subtraction"? And how would that compare to the attempts at isolating vocals that are done with AI and that are usually full of AI "artifacts"?

And how would that compare to the attempts at isolating vocals that are done with AI and that are usually full of AI "artifacts"? As long as the difference between the two is only the vocals being added to the mix, then yes. However, usually there's some other difference between the original mix and the instrumental/backing mix. I gave it a try for Keep Yourself Alive, in this case there's some difference in the guitar between the mixes that causes it to still be present after subtraction. Edit to add: however, this subtraction can probably serve as a better basis for AI isolation, as all vocals are still fully present, but the instruments have been reduced in volume.

I just start to listen to the demos, and... is the demo of KYA on the demos CD the same as the one that we know as Keep Yourself Alive (Trident Studios Early Version)?

What an amazing release. For me the new sound put's a lot in new perspective. I'm so glad that we now have the De Lane Lea Demos in it's full sound glory. The Sessions CD is so interesting and the studio banter is just gold. The Imperial College Live Songs were a very surreal experience for me, I mean Queen, in 1970, Live?! Ten years ago I would never have dreamed of this... but there we are. And finally a better quality version of Hangman Fingers crossed that they rehearsed it in the studio for ADATR, but I doubt it. Who knows... maybe they dig and find something for us, when they plan to release a boxset for Races.

But the drum solo is kinda different with kongas and stuff. Now we know its mostly Take 13. GKR is by the way very identical to one convention Tape (rather obvious bc it's called Take 1 too). But there are some changes too.

I haven't had a chance to listen to everything in detail, so I can't yet bore you all with my analysis. I'll simply say that this is an excellent release, overall.
I'll also say that the version of The Night Comes Down they released with the AI video is easily one of the weakest remixes on the album. The version on Disc 2 is better, in my opinion.
It was a genuinely bizarre marketing decision to choose that song, that version and THAT AI video to represent this release.

Something which I forgot to mention in my post, the ending of Son And Daughter in Takes 1 and 2 in the sessions disc. It sounds similar to the BBC and live versions of the song we've heard post-1973, so as this particular recording is from 1972, and the song was performed live in 1970, it does make you wonder if the song was always extended way beyond the released three minutes version. I mean there's no guitar solo here but there's the potential that it could've easily been fitted, so I wonder if Brian's guitar solo existed on the track before their second BBC session. As predicted by someone (I can't remember who), it's only opened more questions!

I gotta ask for anyone who's got/listened to the box Is there any difference between the remix and "backing track" version of Seven Seas of Rhye?
Cause if there is no difference then it seems kinda silly having to buy the same song twice.

I doubt it made all that much difference to the price. 😄 But I must admit, I wondered that as well. It seems daft to have the same track track duplicated.

Just got through the new mix. Very interesting take. "Mad The Swine" is absolutely the highlight for me, holy cow. Haven't gone through the bonus tracks yet, but the new live tracks are great too. I'll talk specifics when everyone gets a chance to hear.

So, didn't want to spoil too much of my experience of opening the box tomorrow (well, today now lol) but have listened to a few seconds of a few tracks on Ultra HD (Amazon) and on Queen's YT channel.
Holy fuck, there's some good stuff in this!
The remix of the album sounds lovely - very different, but not horrible the way some have been saying. I'll personally treat as as a different album altogether, and won't "replace" the original. It will be good listening to both and treating them very differently.
I've teased myself with a few seconds of Hangman, Jesus and I'm a Man, and they sound great. Can actually hear the words of Hangman properly now!
And to hear Brian call Freddie "Bulsara" during the sessions was a thing of beauty lol.
I know there's some, ahem...padding....but fuck it. This is an awesome release and I can't wait for my delivery now!
