Isn't the convention version from Trident ? The box set's is De Lane Lea. I think it has to be De Lane Lea, because its very similar to the boxset version. There is another Convention Version called 'Take 4'. But the version from the boxset DLL Take 1 - w guide vocal has strangely enough some differences to Convention Take 1. The Convention Take 1 starts with Freddie counting to ten like in the boxset version. Until 'Died syphilis forty-four on his birthday' they are similar. 'Every second word he swore; Yes, he was the son of a whore; Always wanted by the law' is different. Then, the three 'A wouldn't you like to know's are similar again, but the part 'Great king rat was a dirty old man; And a dirty old man was he; Great king rat was a dirty old man' is completly different with other lyrics in the boxset version (Great king rat was a dirty old man; And a dirty old man was he now listen; What did I tell ya;). The 'Would you like to see?' and 'Yeah' after that is identical and from then on the whole convention tape which ends at 03:42 (Boxset-Version) with Freddie counting. So, I found two differences but only in the vocals. Does this mean the 'De Lane Lea Take 1 - with Guide Vocal' in the boxset isn't always Take 1? If I remember in the NOTW Boxset, all different versions were called 'Sessions Version', bc they cut different takes together, I think in some cases here too, but it's not that significant, on the other hand nice to now. Edit: here is a link to the convention Take 1 from Chin's YT channel: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsXYowGIsjEThen one of the two is frankensteined - hopefully not the one on the box set.

I can only say one thing: I want the complete Imperial College and San Diego 76 recordings! This may sound insane, but I actually think there's a higher probability of the 1970 show coming out before the 1976 one. They only used San Diego for this release because they don't have multi-tracked live versions of those two songs (they do have Earls Court for Doing All Right, but apparently the piano mic vocal didn't record on both nights). But the historical interest may well see more of the 1970 tape being released at some point.

I'm on my third or fourth play through of the main album now, and weirdly, the new drum sound seems to be becoming less noticeable. I can't see me going back to the original version any time soon, but I also like the De Lane Lea remixes with the less 'modern' drum sound. Still haven't heard any autotune! 😁

Seeing that picture of John with the Rickenbacker bass recently and hearing that bass riff(solo) on the remix of Liar, I'm just wondering if he played the Rick on Liar. Sounds closer to a Rick than a Fender. It has the metallic sound to it. Anyone know about what bass he used? I haven’t heard it yet, but while a Fender Precision Bass doesn’t sound like a Rickenbacker a Fender Jazz Bass with the bass rolled off a little can get you a sound that isn’t a million miles from a Ricky.

I nearly wept listening to the power of the young band. This soppy bastard DID! I am so happy and I don't have the words to express it! Glad you're having a good time and your face lets everyone else know it!

Still haven't heard any autotune! 😁 I'm so obsessed with the demo and alt takes cuts (that banter, oh my word) I've yet to listen to the newly mixed album a second time! But the clarity of the new mix alone make me pretty happy. I'll probably start listening to sections of each song against the original takes back-to-back just to pick out all of the differences; as there were some sounds and vocals that immediately surprised me in this new mix.
The pitch correction is there, but I'm not sure it's blanketed as heavily. It's only jumped out at me a handful of times, and it's not nearly as noticeable. I wonder if they pulled back on that a notch after dropping TNCD? It's not uncommon for artists to do last-minute updates to things at the 11th hour before release time (though it would be impressive to change something and produce the material for the box sets so quickly). Regardless, it's subtle enough that if it's present, it doesn't bother me.
Shame they didn't choose a different cut of "Hangman" (or maybe they didn't have the proper recordings to choose from)! I love that song, and there are other live performances I enjoy more that have more weight and energy (Japan '76). Freddie's voice sounds pretty great in this San Diego cut, but the performance feels stiffer and tired or something; like they're trudging through mud a bit to get it out.

Maybe it was a last minute addition and a bit under rehearsed? They had plenty of stuff to choose from by 1976, so it can't have been wheeled out very often.

I had bought the set from Amazon France to ship to Canada, but yesterday it still hadn't shipped and Amazon Canada offered me same day shipping, so I cancelled the France box and a mere 4.5 hours after ordering, the box arrived at my house. Omg, I love it. Not t9 say there aren't some things I wish they'd done differently but overall I'm very very happy with it. Big fan of the new Liar and I was blown away by some of the photos in the book. Also, thanks for putting the box title on the spine... hate it when they miss it off.
No time for an in depth discussion but when out driving earlier played the spotify version in the car. The spotify discs 4 and 5 are not correct. The disc 4 backing tracks (not the instrumentals, the ones marked backing tracks) are the same as disc 1, and the bbc disc is the tracks without the dj banter. No idea if the problem is with spotify or qpl fecking up the spotify upload, but something isn't right.

They played versions of Face It Alone with two lead vocal tracks stepping all over one another, sounding like cats scratching on a chalkboard.

I think they picked a pretty decent version of Hangman. Sounds almost as good as Milwaukee.

(they do have Earls Court for Doing All Right, but apparently the piano mic vocal didn't record on both nights). wasn’t it always said about the second night not the first? We’ve seen songs from 1st EC as multitrack mixes that have that mic haven’t we? i.e. Freddie saying “it’s about a nasty old man I used to know” being audible on rags to rhapsody despite being on that mic, and the end of bohemian rhapsody from the movie being a mixture of butchered vocals from the first night and maybe other stuff. I don’t think they’d be using any primitive AI that may have existed at that point.

Sounds closer to a Rick than a Fender. It has the metallic sound to it. Anyone know about what bass he used? Nobody knows..! According to the Q1 recording sheet (helpfully transcribed in another thread) the bass solo is (almost definitely) an overdub - there are 2 bass tracks on Liar, unlike most of the album. So we can assume the solo is not part of the main bass track - though I guess we knew that. (There are other examples of little bass overdubs in early Queen, for example SSOR and KQ). Whether it's played on a Rickenbacker is moot. It could be. OR it could be an overdriven Precision. While basses (& guitars) do have distinctive sounds, it can also be near impossible to tell. I doubt anyone initially 'knew' /realised it had to be a Rickenbacker bass on TNCD. (Or that Hammer To Fall is not 100% on the Red Special.) So, a moot point. I only post this because we know what rumours are like, one mention on a forum and they escape into the wild. (Remember when someone decided, or 'thought' that John played the solo on Who Needs You, and in the end Brian himself had to clarify on his site that it was him). I'd file this under 'not known'. Not that any of it really matters. But the minutiae of Queen records is our bread and butter here, right?

They played versions of Face It Alone with two lead vocal tracks stepping all over one another, sounding like cats scratching on a chalkboard. They also did this for a version of Headlong, with the finished Freddie vocal over Brian's demo. That said I'd be very surprised if this set had been left completely untampered with. I'd guess less so than The Miracle sessions, because they've labeled them with take numbers, but still touched up to some extent.

I only listened to disc 1 so far, so there is still hope to find something good on the other discs, and I know there should be some gems in the sessions and live... but: Disc 1 made my ears literally hurt! It seems to me that they tried to improve / modernize the guitar and drums, then doctored with Freddie's voice to make it fit, and almost forgot about the bass. The result are way to prominant guitar, a voice like some AI zombie, and a buried bass. Luckily I didn't spend any money on this, and will probably not this time.
In my opinion one significant reason for the success of Queen was the synergy between the four so different artists and characters. I didn't mind Brian and Roger continuing to play live without Freddie and John, but butchering the studio recordings we know since decades and listened to a hundred times, even auto-tuning Freddie like this without him having a say? Shame on you, Queen! Pfui.
If anybody starts to like this 2024 Mix, then please listen to Rub's Restoration...

That, and it obviously is a Rickenbacker on Liar. It's pretty well the exact same tone as Chris Squire on the Yes Album.

God, how pleasant it is to hear Freddie trying to portray a guitar and be surprised by the fact that Freddie is counting for some reason They were laying down the basic track. Brian’s feedback in the beginning came later as an extra layer (track) so Brian knew how much time he had to feedback his guitar before the track hits off and he can play the guitar track along the basic track.

A Queen fan for 50 years here and I feel very ignorant (perhaps).
I've been reading the book from the box set this afternoon and I took particular interest in the facsimile of the hand written 'Hangman' lyrics. Having heard the live performances on bootlegs over the past decades, it's always been a little difficult to decipher the lyrics.
I now assume that Hangman was written (at least in part) about Sweeney Todd. There is a reference to a "Mr T" and some "tasty" pork pies. But if that is indeed the case, who is "Mr C" who also figures in the lyrics? If that had read "Mrs L" then it would be a slam dunk. Any thoughts? I fear reading the replies to this post..."What?!?! You didn't know that?".
Love the box by the way.
