After multiple listens, I don't think any of the 2024 mixes will become my go-to version. I enjoy listening to them as an alternative and some elements I like more, but unfortunately there are too many annoying issues for me to fully adopt any of the new versions, even if I ignore the pitch correction.
The most common issue is that the bass is too low in the mix. Son and Daughter is the most obvious example, but all the new mixes lack a bit of weight, in my opinion. The drums and guitar are booming, but the bass is just not as prominent. For what it's worth, I think the new mix of Liar would be close to perfect if the bass volume had been raised a little.

I think your response is sad and overblown. If we don't ask questions, we'll never find answers. Maybe it doesn't interest you which bass Deacon played on a song, it does interest me, and perhaps some others.
Sincerely, I don't mean to offend you, but your reasoning is pretty poor.
That, and it obviously is a Rickenbacker on Liar. It's pretty well the exact same tone as Chris Squire on the Yes Album. Squire yes! Er, I mean Yes!
And YYZ by Rush came to mind. Except Maybe more gain, or even distortion, on the Liar solo.

A Queen fan for 50 years here and I feel very ignorant (perhaps). I've been reading the book from the box set this afternoon and I took particular interest in the facsimile of the hand written 'Hangman' lyrics. Having heard the live performances on bootlegs over the past decades, it's always been a little difficult to decipher the lyrics. I now assume that Hangman was written (at least in part) about Sweeney Todd. There is a reference to a "Mr T" and some "tasty" pork pies. But if that is indeed the case, who is "Mr C" who also figures in the lyrics? If that had read "Mrs L" then it would be a slam dunk. Any thoughts? I fear reading the replies to this post..."What?!?! You didn't know that?". Love the box by the way. "Mrs L" wouldn't have rhymed. 😉

I only listened to disc 1 so far, so there is still hope to find something good on the other discs, and I know there should be some gems in the sessions and live... but: Disc 1 made my ears literally hurt! It seems to me that they tried to improve / modernize the guitar and drums, then doctored with Freddie's voice to make it fit, and almost forgot about the bass. The result are way to prominant guitar, a voice like some AI zombie, and a buried bass. Luckily I didn't spend any money on this, and will probably not this time.
In my opinion one significant reason for the success of Queen was the synergy between the four so different artists and characters. I didn't mind Brian and Roger continuing to play live without Freddie and John, but butchering the studio recordings we know since decades and listened to a hundred times, even auto-tuning Freddie like this without him having a say? Shame on you, Queen! Pfui.
If anybody starts to like this 2024 Mix, then please listen to Rub's Restoration... Ok, listened to disc 2 and 3 and ordered the box :) The demos sound really awesome and the sessions are pure enjoyment. Disc 3 is a Must-Have, so at least the 2CD is highly recommened.

It's amazing, I found myself randomly doing a A/B comparison with Jesus yesterday and the amount of warmth lost on the new one is substantial. I thought I was loving the new mix (I still am enjoying it overall), but after comparing back and forth with these two versions, I didn't realize just how little bass presence the new one has. Will be genuinely interesting what everyone thinks in a month or two when the novelty starts to wear off 🤔

I finally went through the whole boxset. I loved the bonus discs, but the new QI mix left me puzzled... while some songs, like GKR and Liar, benefit from the new remix, others feel too cluttered to me, making the whole album feel somewhat disjointed to me. Also, I think they messed up some of the instruments mix pretty badly, as I can clearly hear them jumping in volume.

I finally found the dolby atmos mix out there. Very interesting becouse you can have just the voice of Freddie on one channel and do your own acapellas of the record An interesting listen that proves they didn't go all the way with the pitch correction on Freddie's vocals. I still hear a few lines that are slightly off, most notably the "They call me" at around 1.50. Also his doubled vocals aren't quite as tight as is often advertised, perhaps on purpose to retain that flowery potpourri vibe as someone on this board described it.

It’s Sunday night and I’ve been listening to all the disks all weekend. Still enjoying it immensely. But as I head to bed I cannot believe the song that is stuck in my head: Mad the Swine. I definitely didn’t see that coming!

I can only say one thing: I want the complete Imperial College and San Diego 76 recordings! They only used San Diego for this release because they don't have multi-tracked live versions of those two songs (they do have Earls Court for Doing All Right, but apparently the piano mic vocal didn't record on both nights). This can't be true because we've heard the piano vocal mic from multitrack mixes in Rags To Rhapsody and the Bohemian Rhapsody movie.

Just noticed that the box set is sold out at the official store. CDJapan is also stating that they only have three copies left of the Japan SHM-CD version of the box. Just wanted to let everyone know who might have held off on buying the box hoping it might come down in price. It's looking like there might be a chance that doesn't get a chance to happen.

I was playing with the Dolby Atmos mix, and channel 3 of this mix have the acapella version of the album, with some other elements, bass or drums normally... this is an example. Very interesting to hear: www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGtINVXsjiYDo you have the links for the Dolby Atmos versions? I have Googled for ages and cannot find it!

I don't have it myself, and my original trial has long since elapsed so can't take out another, but I believe they were going to be available on Tidal as well.

. The spotify discs 4 and 5 are not correct. The disc 4 backing tracks (not the instrumentals, the ones marked backing tracks) are the same as disc 1, and the bbc disc is the tracks without the dj banter. No idea if the problem is with spotify or qpl fecking up the spotify upload, but something isn't right. I noticed this too - need to actually put the cds into a player to see if they are wrong on those and if this is just a Spotify problem Well my cd's are fine, so its definitely a spotify issue. Just not sure who to blame.

I got my first freshly remastered CD copy of Queen I for Christmas 1994 (yes we used to call it like this among the fans, it's true) and I blasted it to death, never getting enough of it, enjoying very much Queen's Music subtle yet flambuoyant intricacies (the in between acoustic guitar runs in "Great King Rat", the chilling end vocal parts on "All Day Long", the endlessly propulsive coda of "Son and Daughter"... All so Much of its time while retaining it's unique cachet. I wiped that CD until I got the vinyl somewhere around 2000, an early Pathé-Marconi pressing. I went down the (Great King)-rat hole all over again and this time I could observe and over anal-yse the numerous details of the cover in all its mysterious glory. It was shrouded in swag, weirdness and endless mystery (a penguin, what?!). 2009, my life was way different, I sold it all, the collection, the complete works (yes it included the NOTW green vinyl, the Magic Tour program with the Knebworth ticket + the xeroxed map to access the car park, The weird South African Live Killers single LP, the yellow special No One But You single, the 75>85 collection of fan club issues... and on and on an on.
I knew my subject
Today, I went on to listen to the Remixed version. I always understood the limitations of the original recording, and I wish to have remixed it so myself many time using best original analog sources (I'm a tape freak) because there certainly was room for improvement and decluturing. And now, we're facing one of these terrible moments when you've been waiting so long for something, you feel forced to like what's given to you. And you know what? I can't bear it at all. For me it gets clear that who's Queen actual crew has left of hears, it only remembers the BOMBAST BLUDGEON RIFFOLA — when Queen was SO MUCH MORE than this.
The drums have not been JUST remixed, they've been obviously beat-detected and on some parts even replaced (The snares....) the natural Trident reverbs have been swapped for stuffed rooms (The claps on Liar, C'MON!!!!), the guitars now sound like Black Sabbath first album, thus rendering bass and vocal dull and unmoving, it's like Re-Dressing a cubist Picasso portrait. DUUUDE!!
They are George Lucasing their own history.
I'm so sad but I hope it will set up a precedent about the do's and the don't of Recording industries. They have all my sympathy.

The biggest difference is George Lucas wanted to completely get rid of the previous versions. His goal was to completely replace what came before his special editions and remove access to it for everyone else. He almost did it too.
"Queen" is still available. "Queen I" is clearly labeled as an alternative experience.

At the time I posted, both the Deluxe Box and Deluxe Box/Picture Disc Bundle were listed as Sold Out. The bundle with the cassette and the cassette itself remain Sold Out. But, it stands that the box may have been pressed in limited numbers, much like The Miracle Deluxe Box.

Been listening to it most of the weekend. I can understand your point of view but I don't agree. It's not as clear cut for me. Overall, I still like it. I think the sessions disc is the glory in this release and for that alone I'm glad they bothered but when it comes to the new 2024 mix, truth is, I think some things are better and some things are worse, sometimes within the same song. Liar is case in point, overall I really like it, but there's a few moments, handclaps being one, where it lacks the 'power' of the original. Maybe that's simply down to volume control on the mix, but they don't leap out the same as they did on the original. On the other hand, the muddiness is gone and it feels fresh. So basically I'm a little torn on the 2024 mix, but not torn on the box set itself. Its just missing an atmos mix. I will say that the new mix sounds way better off cd's played on my (quite decent) basement set up compared with listening to Spotify on my phone headphones (duh). Or rather should be a duh, but often isn't these days. Anyhow, I'm ok with them doing this. But I hope the original Queen album remains available, and Queen 1 is treated as a new version, not a replacement.

Setting aside the debate over the remix, the thing I find most pleasing about this box is the sessions disc. What comes across (in what they've chosen for us to hear) is the fun they seemed to be having making the album. They were at the beginning of their road, (perhaps blissfully) unaware of what was to come, and the camaraderie of what was essentially four young lads let loose in a candy shop, is just a joy to hear. Oh, to be that young again, and perhaps, with hindsight, to do things differently.
I really hope that they get a good reaction to this box set, and have the impetus to give Queen II the same treatment, if only for another sessions disc with this fascinating insight into the recordings and their early relationships. "It was YOU, Bulsara, you were flat, you bastard!" still makes me laugh every time. More of this please!

"Queen I" is clearly labeled as an alternative experience. You're both right! The comparison is spot on. The 1997 Special Edition of Star Wars (as well as Phantom Menace a few years later) was George Lucas getting carried away with a new toy, which in his case was CGI. It aged poorly because CGI at that point was at its nascent stage and GL clearly overused it. The "Queen I" Remix is Brian and Roger getting carried away with a not-so-new toy, which in their case is digital manipulation of recordings in post-production and which to my ear they overused here. Let's face it: no amount of tweaking will make the drums on Queen I sound as if they had been miked by Glyn Johns or Steve Albini. At the same time, we still have "Queen" and irrespective of how revisionist Brian and Roger may yet become, the original mix has been reissued too many times for it to go away as easily as the pre-SE Star Wars Trilogy did.

And it's no.3 in the midweek UK album chart, probably going to drop a few places

Got mine today. Didn't listen to everything yet but the SESSIONS are great and the LIVE material is a good listen. It even doesn't turn me off that anything seems to be polished to the max. Time will tell.
But did anybody mention they didn't include two versions of "See What A Fool I've Been" that should have been there: * the original B-side (i always wondered about the story behind that camp vocals!) * and the July'73-BBC-Session hm. (not the first time, btw, that something has been left off a boxset release, when we think of the original mix of "i'm scared" on the another world boxset.) whatever.
looking foreward to hear the instrumentals tomorrow :-)

Overall I like very much this release.
According to Brian nothing was changed, everything is like the original.
But I don't think it is. In My Fairy King at 1:44 a guitar is added, the same as it is on BBC version.
On Jesus in the ending the chorus has not got the echo, which on the original make it sound like a Cathedral.
I am waiting my box to arrive just to see, if there is any info about the remix.

Having listened to selections from the box on YouTube, I've decided I'll be getting the 2CD version. Shoot, I'll miss the book, the 1970 and 1976 live recordings and the better-than-ever sounding (albeit pitch-corrected) DLL demos, but the true highlight to me is the Sessions CD. I completely agree with every word of your post.
