Maybe Roger was saving his better work for his solo albums. Let's face it, Fun It and More Of That Jazz don't exactly set the world on fire. Only one good song on The Works and Magic. Coming Soon is only average as well, so his songs on Queen albums from 1978 to 1986 was hit or miss.

Let's face it, Fun It and More Of That Jazz don't exactly set the world on fire. i disagree about Fun It it's a really cool song - and very much "with it" for the music of the times. It's also (IMO) infinitely better than the dance tracks on Game, HS and Works. For starters the lack of synthesised instruments makes for amore organic sound. And the song itself has much more soul and funk than anything on the supposed "funk" crossover - HS - which incidentally was six years too late for the whole Studio54 dance thing - and way after bands like Purple, Zep, Eagles, ELO, Doobies, Kiss etc all ventured into this territory. Queen were not pioneers - far from it, they were late to the party. However, Roger was at least in tune with the times...having ventured into dance in 78. Maybe Roger was saving his better work for his solo albums. the band themselves decided as a group which songs made it to a final album cut. Roger's solo songs (early versions) will have been presented to the band for consideration. why do i say this? it's fairly obvious: as a band member, which would you rather, your song appears on a potentially huge-selling band LP, or on your own solo LP? the band LP has the obvious bigger market which makes better financial sense from a royalties perspective. if, as a song writer he had a choice of Man On Fire being on Strange Frontier or The Works...it's a no-brainer. The band collectively vetoed the song. I'm pretty confident that from 78-84 Roger's song-writer status within the band was the same as George Harrison - ie, loads of ideas being presented, but most being rejected - as May & Mercury were unwilling to give any ground on their own 4-songs-per-LP unwritten rule. As the 80s wore on, Freddie and Brian's own personal lives caused distractions, and Roger and John were "allowed" to contribute more material to LPs.

I realise I'm very much in the minority but I absolutely love More of that Jazz. Mind you, I really like She Makes Me too, I think those moody, atmospheric tracks at the end of those respective albums really add an extra dimension. Neither written to be performed live, solely to bring a unique texture to the collection of songs they amassed.

Sheer Heart Attack really Is a great album. More of That Jazz is better than Fun It, but it not as good as Fight From The Inside. It sounds like an unfinished song. Don't Stop Me Now would of been the perfect last song on Jazz.

Don't Stop Me Now would of been the perfect last song on Jazz. i don't know how a song proclaiming an unstoppable sentiment could end an LP? it's a strange idea (especially as the song ends like this) (Don't stop me now) 'Cause I'm having a good time (Don't stop me now) Yes, I'm havin' a good time I don't want to stop at all"what? oh? what's that? it's the end of the record? ...so i do have to stop after all?" it just doesn't work as an idea, it's a dichotomy of sorts "don't stop" vs "actual physical forced stop" DSMN would've been a great opener to side 2 - or follow on from Mustapha. and talking of fitting end-of-LP songs: The Traveling Wilburys Vol 1 (original release) ended with The End of The Line.

A bit like We Are The Champions, The Show Must Go On and It's a Beautiful Day (reprise) then...

I'll ask it here instead of starting a new thread: I can place most of the samples on 'Shove It', and I know Freddie's "We love 'em, yeah!" is new, but what is his "Yeah!" from? (Note: it's not the same "Yeah" on Made In Heaven.)
