Okay, it's not Freddie's greatest ever output, but I don't get the hate for MBG.
Pre-internet/eBay, I searched for what seemed an eternity to get it on any format (I started collecting circa '95) and just about jiz*ed myself when I finally tracked it down.
It has some nice tracks on it, notably MIH, IWBTLY, TMBMTLTT, MMP and LMLTNT.
Yet - the vast majority seem to despise the album.
I loved the new special edition, but still like going "home" to the original. Also love the outtakes from the Freddie Solo box.
Actual opinions, now we seem to be troll free?
Why the hate?

The album does have some nice tracks but in my opinion it did not age very well. Even with the special edition the songs still sounded dated. But like you I actually prefer the original release.

There are a lot of great hooks, but there's little direction in the songwriting. Mercury thought he could create his own Thriller without any outside interference - clearly he didn't read the liner notes. He wrote about 15 songs, whereas MJ and Quincy leafed through about 800 to pick the best nine.
The dated production is the least of its problems. Mercury hired unknown session players that sounded like a third-rate Queen, and it just falls flat.
All four band members had their moments on their solo albums, but they functioned best as a collective - exemplified by the fact that the two best songs from Mr. Bad Guy ended up on Made In Heaven and sound a thousand times better in every way.

Freddie was definitely aiming for a club/dance feel. he missed quite badly. for one, i always thought the bass sounded too thin and the overall finish is a little "club-light".
strange thing is, generally, when singers in huge bands record a solo LP, it's a difficult thing to achieve success while still being in your original band. as Bob says, you surround yourself with hired guns - while retaining all quality control yourself. a lot of crud gets through.
Jagger, Lynne, Daltrey, Lynott, Fish, etc - at best slight to moderate solo success.
However, break up/leave the band and it's a different story. Clapton, Plant and Ozzy have all had major success. i think this is down knowing what you're doing is the new job, rather than something of an "itch to scratch"

With the advance they got from CBS. They could've have hired some seasoned session players to help work on the album. Guys like Greg Phillinganes, Giorgio Moroder to name a few would've turned that record around. Either that or much of the advance went to the "recreational" department.
That's not to say I dislike it though. I love some of the tracks there, like Let's Turn It On (the Special Edition brought more life to it), Fooling Around (I love this one. It's a good chillout song for me) MIH and IWBTLY. It isn't really a terrible album.

I think the recent remix give a more fresh mood. It's always a decent album, nothing more, but now i heard it better than before. The old mix sounds too old too my ears.

I wish Gerry was here to put you all in your place Only joking. It certainly doesn't stand up to the quality of many of the albums/artists offered up here, but I guess it just holds a special place in my weary old ticker

I got a page saying the forum wasn't found. Same to me, it's a new forum and there's a lot of things, behind it, to fix.

it's weird. Proboards usually only three or four server maintenance jobs a year - and usually during USA nightime. that was odd though, maybe just a brief outage?

Don't forget Mike Rutherford. And Dave Grohl as well, even if he founded a new group rather than going solo. Sometimes I wonder if The Cross would have been more succesful should Roger formed the band in 1992 when Queen was in everyone's mouth, in some way running the same reception that Brian got with 'Too Much Love Will Kill You' after premiering it during the tribute concert.

This album, like Hot Space, has some good songs. The problem is the arrangments because when that songs were played live (for ex. the Hot Space tracks)the rendition is far better! Great songs with a bad arrangment. Personal view obviously

I don't hate it, but I don't love it either.
Some of the songs are really well-written, but they're poorly executed (except for the vocals and Mandel's piano).

The songs I really love are Mr Bad Guy, Made In Heaven, the intro to Your Kind Of Lover, and the operatic end bit of Man Made Paradise.

This Is one album I rarely listen to these days...I do like songs on this like Made In Heaven and I was Born To Love You, which were done better on the Made In Heaven Album. Man Made Paradise and Love Me Like there's No Tomorrow are nice. The problem was the player's Freddie picked as his backing band. Also, he was busy with Queen In between albums The Works and Magic..Touring as well. If he had more time and better artists working with him like he had with Barcelona It would of been much better.

The album always sounded unfinished to me but I never had a problem with it. It felt here and there more like a follow-up to "Hot Space" rather than an album that came out after "The Works" to me.
All in all I like the album but it's not my favorite solo-wise. That would be "Barcelona". It has great ballads like "There Must Be More To Life Than This", "Love Me Like There's No Tomorrow", "Made in Heaven" and "I Was Born To Love You".
"Let's Turn It On", "Living On My Own", "Your Kind Of Lover" and "Fooling Around" are more partying-sounding which could have been on HS soundwise. "Mr. Bad Guy" and "Man Made Paradise" are less-club sounding but rather rocking songs.
"My Love Is Dangerous" is a pop-rock song with a slight reggae vibe. Quite different to the rest.

Last night I listened to the new version, was a big surprise, more organic and rounded sound, not so dated and less reverby.

The special edition release has really reinvigorated Mr. Bad Guy for me. I’m loving the new mix of the album, despite the fact that Mack wasn’t involved. I’ve always approached and appreciated the album as something Freddie was interested in and was specifically a step away from his Queen work.
As mentioned, the only thing that bugs me a little is the sound of the session players. Too bad he didn’t sneak the rest of the band in to lay the music down for him, but I guess that would have defeated the purpose...

agreed with you about the songs - some lazy writing, too much "plastic clubs sound", poor production. the album cover? it's neither good nor bad.

Guys, I have a confession. I LOVED MBG when it was released. 1985. I was 15, with my first love, and listening to Love Me Like Theres No Tomorrow broke my heart cos she was moving away with her parents. It was so bloody real. Even now, centuries later, it still feels like yesterday. Only songs that didn't float my boat were Man Made Paradise and My Love is Dangerous. Still my favourite Freddie solo is Your Kinda Lover.
