I saw a CD in a store about 5 years ago, it is called Icon. (I went ahead and bought it since I hadn’t seen it before) It is by Hollywood records and dated 2013. I have never seen it on a discography that I can recall, so I’m wondering if anyone knows why it was released or the circumstances around it? It is just a greatest hits type thing, but I am curious since I’ve not seen it discussed before.

I did google it before, so I know it’s out there. I think what I’m looking for is how did it come about? What prompted the release, how did they choose the songs, was Queen really involved or was this a record company effort only? I’ve not heard it mentioned before so I am just curious and looking for info on it. It seems odd to me to release this when they have greatest hits already, unless they were just looking to condense the greatest hits to 1 CD only.

Universal has an Icon Series for their major artists. When Queen signed on with Universal, they eventually released a Queen Icon CD via their North American distributor (Hollywood). I’m not sure if the band would have been involved in the track selection; probably a decision via Universal/Hollywood. You can find these in the $5 bin in Walmart (where I found my Queen copy).

All compilation albums have one reason to exist, one purpose. Money.

Queens blunder with Hollywood Records resulted in some of the worst releases ever in my opinion. Remember the extremly bad and raped "We Will Rock You" remixes from 1992?

Honestly, I love the Rick Rubin ruined remix, and some of the other remixes, but that's because News of the World was my first-ever cassette in 1993 and that was a bonus track, and the amount of times 10-year-old me played that cassette... I can't even begin to tell you.
I know I'm in the minority but I like some of the Hollywood remixes. Not the dance ones, but some of the more extreme – Ogre Battle, Fat Bottomed Girls – and some of the more subtle – Liar, I'm In Love With My Car, Best Friend, Tie Your Mother Down, Somebody to Love – remixes. Even Body Language benefited from a remix, something I never thought I'd say!
I do think that Hollywood has been the wrong place for Queen for the past 15 years. I remember being disappointed when Queen's contract with them was up (I can't remember what year) and they renewed with them instead of going somewhere else. I think the compilations that came about from 2004 onward (Stone Cold Classics, The A-Z of Queen, Icon) are useless; Queen Rocks was alright, it gave us 1 ½ new songs, but nothing out of the ordinary.
Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if Queen had gone with Rykodisc instead of Hollywood...

Thanks! This is what I was looking for, I didn’t know Icon was a series. I just found it odd that it is never listed in the Queen list of “official” releases, so wasn’t sure how it came about. I believe I got mine in a $5 bin too! I am a bit surprised that I’m in Love With My Car is on this one, as it was not a hit in the US. They had other songs here that were more popular.

In early or mid 00s there was a car (Jaguar maybe) TV advertisement in US, which had IILWMC, after a few TV spots the song was selling big amounts on digital downloads and it was issued as as promo radio CD. During the re - release of GH we will rock you edition, the song was included too.

Yeah, it's an interesting track listing for sure! More on the heavier side than most compilations - possibly because of the North American target audience. I just found the wiki site for the album and was surprised to find that it reach #8 in the Canadian album charts! Universal has an Icon Series for their major artists. Yes...weird they would do the heavier tracks, I don’t really remember hearing Tie Your Mother Down or Stone Cold Crazy here that much. So they left off You’re My Best Friend, Play the Game, Bicycle Race, Crazy Little Thing Called Love....all which were much bigger in the US, at least where I am. Kind of a head-scratcher as to how they came up with the track list, really. Radio Gaga and ANOBTD are on it and they aren’t heavy tracks. Maybe it was throwing darts at the Queen list of songs!

Reminds me of the other “Walmart” release called “The A to Z of Queen - Volume 1.” Another compilation to cash in on the Queen + Paul Rodgers tour. Yeah, it's an interesting track listing for sure! And "Stone Cold Classics" with the worst cover ever for a compilation.
I give the Icon CD credit for having a decent cover.

And "Stone Cold Classics" with the worst cover ever for a compilation. God, what an awful cover. Looks like it was done in about 30 seconds in Microsoft Paint... worse than most bootleg covers. For the (lucky) few that haven't seen it:

This one should be re-issued but with all 12" versions and not album tracks... (Cover is quite boring too as it looks almost exactly like GH2 but at least better than the SCC one )
