I really enjoyed it, it helps that it's been approved by Queen Productions and they can play the songs and some 'rarities'. Well worth a listen.

When I heard Simon Lupton was on the show I knew instantly the show would be a real treat.

I've really enjoyed the first two episodes of this, the guys' passion for the music and knowledge of the songs is great. Any in depth discussion of the early albums is catnip for me.
Must say though, a minor niggle, but sometimes none of them know of certain things, that to me they really ought to.. there's a discussion about the drum sounds and "The Night Comes down" and I was tearing my hair out. Surely they should show it's an early demo, not recorded at Trident? It more or less says so on the sleeve! Also that it can therefore have nothing to do with recording late at Trident!? At least someone notes how it sounds less developed and sure footed than the rest of the songs, which is quite nice and perceptive.
Then they're not sure if Modern Times Rock n Roll was played live.. come on guys. It's amazing because the level of knowledge is otherwise so impressive, but these seem like things any dedicated Queen fan would know.
Besides that, it's a great listen. And I'm not that bothered in the end as they seem a good bunch.

But overall, what we're getting is an incredible program that feeds my obsession. I hope they continue to release episodes. What a great podcast to listen to on my way to work! Btw, their last episode on album covers was super enjoyable. Gave me some fresh perspective.

Fans aren't a uniform bunch.
To be outright self-centred and utterly narcissistic, as usual, I'll use myself as an example: people tend to think of me as a consummate massive Queen fan, and in some senses I certainly am, but in others that couldn't be further from the truth. I rarely listen to the band (or to music in general, and by and large I'm not into rock at all), but I do often listen to interviews and read magazine articles or books (of which I've got about a dozen) to find out who wrote what, who played what, who sang what, where what was recorded and how many tracks were used, and so on.
I'm not as much a fan of the music (though I admire and respect their skills) as much as I'm a fan of their history - but not all of their history, just the studio part of it: recording facilities, producers, equipment used, timelines, statistics. There are thousands, probably even millions, of people who are far bigger fans than I am in terms of how often they play their records, how much money they've spent on them, the emotion they feel when they listen to them, the fact some of them have named their pets or kids after band members. Do you know how many Queen posters I've got? Zero. How many t-shirts? None. How many vinyls? Nought (my dad's got one, though). I've spent some money on books, though, and I've invested thousands of hours the last two decades to researching them. So, in one sense I'm not at all a fan, and in another I'm a massive die-hard obsessed Queenhead.
Programmes like this one further exemplify that diversity: they're clearly great fans, they know and love the band a lot, they're aware of their wardrobe and haircuts and at least one of them has spoken to Brian in person quite a few times; another one of them learnt drums directly inspired by Roger (I'm a singer myself, but Frederick's not by any means an influence - I tend to separate those fields of my life and they rarely overlap); another one coins lovely puns (I loved the term 'May-spaining' and really wanna find a conversation in which I can organically introduce it). But they're clearly not as hung up on timelines, bootlegs or studio info as many of us are.
They did get one thing right, though: based on the evidence we've got, 'The Night Comes Down' seems to be one of the last songs they wrote for the album.

That's the thing though - I'd say they're probably knowledgeable fans to the same, or most probably a greater level than I am. Plus there's four of them, so I'd think they'd between them know more than me. But something like not knowing about the recording history of The Night Comes Down just seemed crazy. And how could you have a shelf full of fan club mags from the 1980s but not know if Modern Times Rock N Roll was ever played live? Did he pack Queen in before Rainbow was released, but still decide to do the podcast? It just confuses me, but as I say, I'm genuinely not knocking them.
As for being a fan, the things I know nothing about are stuff like - when/where exactly the albums were made, in what order the songs were written/recorded, things like that. Stat stuff, basically. I could hazard some good guesses, but only from what I've accidentally absorbed over the years. And ask me for tour dates, how many times they toured Japan in the 70s or whatever - forget it. And I never owned (and certainly never made) my own T-shirt or poster collage. I don't have a shelf full of Queen books, and definitely not a Freddie standee in the bedroom or a dog called Deacon.
But pretty much all the little factoids (apart from personal things) that they are sharing, I already know. I smile to hear them but there's nothing genuinely new out there. But their original takes on songs that I know to death - the discussion of Son and Daughter as a 'sexy' song, or Show Must Go On as "Godless", is new and fascinating to me. So I'll very happily cut them a lot of (fannish) slack.

Since those topics often come up in these forums, they're 'common knowledge' to us. They've other priorities, and that, as you seem to agree, is refreshing.

As an aside, if you haven’t seen John Robins live stand up shows then when they are back up and running after Covid, then do. He is an incredibly thoughtful and captivating comic. I think one of his shows may currently still be on Netflix.

Sometimes it takes people who aren't megafans to provide insight that traditional megafan types don't.
A thoroughly enjoyable listen so far.

Queen II side Black pod has just been released, looking forward to this one. On a side note, I love side white but still think Loser in the End doesn't fit so I swap it for Dear Friends from Sheer Heart Attack. Its a Brian song and it just finishes the side off nicely before the madness starts for Freddie's side! Anyone else do this?

I think the album would be lacking without a Roger-sung track. Perhaps if he'd penned 'Tenement Funster' a year earlier...

Excellent, just listened to the Side White podcast a few days back so well ready for Side Black.
Once again some frustrating moments of missing fan knowledge (although the "sitar" discussion was thankfully rectified by some live wiki-ing!) but nothing worth getting het up about. I also wish they'd reviewed the actual See What A Fool b-side (rather than just unconvincingly claiming the BBC version was a better recording). Freddie's unbelievably camp performance surely warrants comment, if you're discussing the releases of a group called "Queen" in 1974.. this was part and parcel of who they were. Still.
The album covers podcast was good too, except that they missed some interesting discussion by dismissing the cover of ADATR as just the ANATO crest on a black backdrop, and claiming The Game cover was a bespoke photoshoot for the album. Er, not at all.. but these are minor issues.
Quite the best part of Side White was the singer/comedienne's (forgot her name) appraisal of Freddie's vocal style, his "crying" tone and stance on stage as a vital part of his delivery. Genuinely enlightening and fascinating stuff.

Brilliant episode. I have to admit that I never realized how similar Brian's Black Queen guitar solo (at the end) was to the final solo work on Bohemian Rhapsody. I think my head just about exploded.

Has been rather busy lately so I hadn't checked it out after the sophomore album. I skipped the Smile ep for now because I saw there was an interview with Timothy. Listening to it right now.

Enjoyed Side Black, though it felt somehow a bit less involved than previous editions. Another big tick though for the analysis of Freddie's delivery on Funny How Love Is. Plus the outpouring of love for Fairy Feller was nice to hear. Thought Nevermore warranted a bit more discussion - the first of Freddie's piano/love ballads, quite a vital moment in the discography.
The end of MOTBQ being BR-ish, I always thought was fairly obvious, but OK.
What's nice is that I feel like chipping in to their conversation, and it's made me think of things I never would otherwise. Had a mini revelation about Brian's writing, but will save that for another day..
Look forward to doing the 'early years' and Smile eps.

The end of MOTBQ being BR-ish, I always thought was fairly obvious, but OK. I've no clue why it wasn't obvious to me. I certainly feel ridiculous because of course I listened to both songs countless times. I guess it goes to show just how timeless the music is. I continue to find little things that blow my mind.

Brilliant discussion this week. Nearly 3 hours talking about the first side of Sheer Heart Attack. It's simply a joy to listen to them talk. Looking forward to next week!

Haven't listened to that last ep yet. I've had so much on my plate this week (nothing bad, fortunately). Would anyone here agree to have a FB group (or, even better, WhatsApp!) to discuss the podcast content in (more or less) real time?

I'd be interested, but I'm usually driving to and from work when listening. So I wouldn't be able to participate in real time.

A facebook-along is an interesting idea but don't think it's very practical for me unfortunately.
I'm about four epiodes behind now as well..
