this week's highlights: Mon Nov 16th: Mars reaches a stationary point today, as western motion comes to a halt. The planet’s apparent motion will resume from tomorrow but now easterly against the background sky. Thurs Nov 19th: A 25%-lit crescent Moon forms a right-angled triangle with Saturn and Jupiter - Saturn at the right-angle. Fri Nov 20th: The Pleiades open cluster (see below) reaches its highest position in the sky due south. with binoculars 15-30 stars should become visible (the cluster contains hundreds).

updates:
■ Sun, Nov 29 - Full Moon between Aldebaran below it and the Pleiades above. Aldebaran is easier to see through the moonlight than the Pleiades are. ■ Tue, Dec 1 - Moon tonight is in the middle of the gigantic Winter Hexagon. Orion to its lower right, with orange Betelgeuse and white Rigel; and Gemini with Castor and Pollux to the Moon's lower left. Upper left of the Moon is Auriga with bright Capella*. Upper right of the Moon is orange Aldebaran. ■ Fri, Dec 4 - Jupiter and Saturn, now 1.8° apart, heading toward record-breaking conjunction 0.1° apart on December 21st. ■ Sat, Dec 5 - Vega shines brightly in the west-northwest. Above it is Deneb, the head of the Northern Cross. ■ Mon/Tue, Dec 14/15 - Leonids Meteor Shower - >100 per hour: asteroid 3200 Phaethon ■ Mon/Tue, Dec 21/22 - Ursids Meteor Shower - 10 per hour: comet 8P/Tuttle
The Planets in December:
■ Mercury (mag –0.8) very low in the eastern dawn - will disappear progressively with each day. ■ Venus (mag –3.9) in the eastern dawn the "Morning Star," like Mercury, it's getting lower with each week. ■ Mars (mag –1.1) east-southeast at dusk. Mars is fading and shrinking into the distance, but it's still a nice view in a telescope, big enough to show surface detail during steady seeing. ■ Jupiter and Saturn (mag –2.0 and +0.6, respectively) farther down in the southwest during dusk. Separation shrinks from 2.6° to 1.9° (from November 27th to December 4th). ■ Uranus (mag 5.7) east-southeast after nightfall, about 20° east (lower left) of Mars. Will appear as a tiny fuzzy ball, not a point, in small telescope. ■ Neptune (mag 7.9) about 20° in the south in early evening. Harder to resolve than Uranus except in very good seeing.
* Capella is an excellent winter star - over the north-east horizon, circling around Polaris for a few hours. When low on the horizon, Capella often displays rapid blinking and color (much like Sirius).

Black Wings Chief Mouse ThomasQuinn jon_innuendo HelloDelilah Chopin1995 pg emrabt The Real Wizard Lord Fickle Raf katydyd5Hi all unless you've been living under a rock - you'll know that Monday 21st (around sunset) is a very special date for stargazers. The great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn - two giant planets of the Solar System will lie a mere six arcminutes apart. The closest Great Conjunction since 1623 will see gas giant planets Jupiter and Saturn so close together in the night sky, they will appear to the naked eye as a single bright 'star' just in time for Christmas - thought to be associated with the "Bethlehem Star". so, the "usual" crisp/clear/cold December nights have not materialised (as yet) and we've been cloud-covered here for a couple of weeks. so, any chance that everyone could check their skies from today (Saturday til Monday) and grab whatever images you can and post them here: queenchat.boards.net/thread/201/astrophotography?page=2

Brenski, I've been looking forward to see this all month. Sadly I think we are going to have rain, or at the very least, be overcast.
