This is just a thought I had, and I was wondering how many people might find this interesting.
I know there are some amateur and pro musicians on this forum, as well as other people who take in interest in the more technical side of music. I was thinking we could open a new topic, say, once a week, to discuss some aspect of music theory in relation to Queen's music - to just randomly throw out a few examples: the chord progression of a given song, the way vocal harmonies in a given song were constructed (e.g. counterpoint), certain 'tricks' or stylistic devices one or more of the members used repeatedly, interesting/unusual chords found in Queen songs, the way a melodic phrase or the melody of an entire song is constructed. etc.
If at least a couple of people are interested, those of us who know something about music theory can exchange ideas and pick things up from each other, while those of us who aren't so familiar with it can discover a, hopefully interesting, new way to look at the music we already know and love.

Hi Tom,
A fantastic idea mate. I'm on board.
Any others think that this would be a good addition to the forum?

Of course!! I’m in! I’m an amateur musician and don’t think I can’t contribute that much, but would love to learn as much from you guys as possible!

It would be a great topic. I'm an amateur musician, more instinctual than professional, so I can't contribute much to the topic, but I could learn a lot. Too bad Sebastian doesn't have the website where he made those great song analysis. I'm sure The Real Wizard could contribute a lot.

Great idea! I wouldn't be able to contribute much, but it would certainly be an interesting topic.

About 10 years ago, I made a comparision of Father to Son (Studio vs Golders Green Hippodrome) and a litle bit of Son and Daughter. I posted it on Queenzone, back then. If anyone is interested, here it is : mega.nz/file/w4wiVI7R#6uW8nUQYxPf5oETMQNvBkczew_cJ5-5JDgIVi5fgknsP.S. My limited english and music understanding may be forgiven.

Im all for it too. I am one of those who can play music on guitar and just about get through a few songs on piano. So learning new stuff would greatly help indeed.

ThomasQuinn - go for it. there's plenty of musos here - both tech and keen music lovers. it's always refreshing (even after listening to music since the mid-60s) to learn new stuff about the tunes we love.

I'm afraid I have no musical ability or technical knowledge to be able to contribute anything at all to this, but would absolutely love to see this go forward. I love reading analysis and discussion by people (in any field) that know what they are talking about. Every day is a school day!
This is just a fantastic site!

Ok guys, glad to see that quite a few people find this idea appealing! I'd like to do this well, so I'll do my homework first, and I'll kick off the first installment tomorrow. I hope to see you all there!

Following interest generated in having a musicians section on the forum, I've moved, retitled and stickied this thread, with a view to potentially creating a designated sub-forum, depending on popularity and usage.

Following a recent injury, I thought I might be off work for an extended period of time. So I downloaded a piano app, thinking I'd put some effort into learning it.
I learnt a few bits... Bits of Lean On Me, Stand By Me, and Imagine mainly. Then I realised I was learning it really badly - effectively I've learnt the left hand part right handed....

OK, so here's a question that will hopefully kick things off: does anybody here record Queen songs using Superior Drummer 3 for drums?

This is a folder I made with some songbooks. It will be a collaborative research. 1) Feel free to drop new files (.PDF, .DOC or whatever), in here or via PM. 2) I think a few of this books are 'semi official', or at least, licensed for publishing. If that is the case, I will happily remove, in that folder, any official material. Thanks. Let's enhace this thread. mega.nz/folder/to43yIaA#Mo550vBebu3UHtv5PnGf4g

And please, no further copyrighted material to be included in the folder, or posted on here, unless they are legitimate links to sites where the material has been officially published. Thanks. 🙂

Did anything come of this? Musician here with a love for analysing Queen's music. I've also done a bunch of full score transcriptions, but I'm never sure if sharing them is okay.

With regards transcriptions, I didn't know either, but a quick Google found this: Is it legal to transcribe music? It is perfectly legal to transcribe your own musical compositions. However, it is not legal to reproduce or rearrange any other copyrighted musical work. If you are seeking to transcribe another writer’s work, you should first ensure that sheet music for the composition in question is not already available. In the event that the sheet music is already available for purchase, asking a transcriber or transcription platform to create an alternate version or arrangement may constitute copyright infringement and could result in legal action. verbit.ai/general/how-and-why-to-transcribe-music/So, I'm afraid the answer to your question as to whether you can share transcriptions appears to be a no, if it's not your own composition.

Thanks for the clarification, that makes sense. Some of my transcriptions are available via the Ultimate Guitar website, though, where all licenses and copyright are taken care of (the site is owned by Muse Group, who also now own Hal Leonard Publishing). I sometimes make Guitar Pro files and they are presented on the website as proper music notation as well as with sound playback. Linking to these should be fine, right?

I think we can apply a similar rule to that of YouTube videos, in that if the content is available on a legitimate website, we can link to it as it's up to the source website to deal with any copyright requirements, and we cannot be responsible for the content on external websites.
