Introduction To Queen Docuseries
Proof Of Concept:
Who Are We?
This idea was created by two Queen fanatics, Sheamus and Jaxon. Here are a little bits about ourselves individually.
Sheamus
Hello! My name’s Sheamus, I’m from West London and I’m the least active on boards out of myself and Jaxon but I lurk around in the shadows from a distance. I’ve always been enamoured with acting and the arts and still wish to pursue this and am a huge football fan but anyways; Queen. I came from the movie, which to some people doesn’t make me a real fan but that’s fine, I can’t change that. It’s been almost two years that I’ve been a fanatic of Queen and over the last few months with this project it’s just blown up if I’m being truthful. It comes from a perspective of creative output and, without sounding like a major pacifist, a want to do something I love about something I love whilst being entertaining and educational. Anyway that’s myself in all my glory, which seriously isn’t much but hey ho. As said I work from the back but I see all, but don’t take that as a threat, it just means I’ll answer any questions and respond to people very quickly (I don’t have much of a life outside this project. Don’t pity me).
Jaxon
I am Jaxon! I live in Newfoundland (Canada). I want to pursue a career in music. I’m currently in a band working with music, which is quite inspired by Queen. I stand quite tall at around 191cm (6'5 and 1/4). I have a pretty cumbersome-looking figure and I recently grew my hair out (not that long... yet....). I liked Queen and their sound very early on, and I’d always hear them on the radio, but I never knew what the song was called. I clicked on this one video named “I cannot remember” and I was thrilled because I finally knew who the band I had heard for so long was. Over a lengthy period, I continued researching and researching and now I’m a lot more educated than before and researching about this band has been stressful but fun. I’d have to say learning about Queen’s music made me a better musician and made me push more limits in my writing. Now, I can write something with well over 100 time changes and crazy complex chords and I wouldn’t have done that thanks to the inspiration inaugurated by the innovation of Queen.
What Is Our Idea?
Our plan is to create a docuseries filling in the parts of Queen’s story often looked over and missed in documentaries for lack of time or perhaps “irrelevance”. But, being the queen fanatics we are, want to create a piece of informative and entertaining content about something we love, appreciate and want to have fun with!
Where Did It Begin And How Has It Progressed?
Well I (Sheamus) started a queen page with the hopes of posting lyrical analysis videos, as I had been doing analysis of their first album with the hopes of understanding what makes a good piece of writing. I then posted into a Queen Fan GroupChat asking if anyone wanted to follow the page and help me out and Jaxon said he’d love to help “do some jaunty notes” and from there a doc was made (Queen Analysis and Timeline) which snowballed into more docs because the first would take ages to load. Then the idea went from small videos on instagram to small ones on youtube, to mixing them, to long videos on youtube with segments on instagram until I believe Jaxon said “fuck it, lets do a documentary” and then we realised a stand alone documentary wouldn’t begin to fit all of what we have at this rate, let alone what we don’t have so we drafted a rough idea on what we could do until it was like “shit we’ve got about, 18 episodes of content here” and we’ve stuck with that since really.
Why have we decided to do this?
Ooh, well, many reasons. I think every fan would love to be the one to know everything but gatekeeping information within Queen fans is a big issue, so this is a way of getting all known information out there and having fun doing it. It’s also a personal gain, working on something ambitious, it’s a good bonus that this is about something we love. It’ll be an experience to visit lots of iconic Queen places, entertain people and be rather comedic when doing it. Also, why not?
What's Our Target Audience?
Queen fans, essentially, or anyone who appreciates the effort put into this. Anyone who wants to watch.
How Is This Different?
When something is made by fans I think there’s a certain vibe it excludes of a personal nature, a certain devotion to it. There’s also much much more information here than any documentary could have given so far as they tend to hit pinpoints in Queen’s career, whereas those Pinpoints for us are each their own episode and we fill in all between it. It’s a grassroots project, at heart, made by fans, for fans, and for a laugh
Progress so far:
Outfit Documentation:
So far it’s just a bunch of images of the attire the band have worn on stage in the 70s, to keep track and such. Nothing more to it really.
Session Notes:
Jaxon here, this section is basically all of the currently documented studio notes. Here, I try to build potential multitrack tracklists (e.g. 1. Kick 4. Overhead L) from studio information and the deconstruction of each multitrack using audio manipulating plug-ins.
Queen Analysis And Timeline:
The original, if you will. This is what has started it all. Has a whole music theory section, music analysis, lyrical analysis, erm, it’s been a while since I (sheamus) has been on it actually, we’re both bouncing between other ones rather than this. Also has a segment of our opinions for each song, I almost forgot.
Studio Timeline:
Jaxon here, the studio timeline has been mostly completed. Although there are edits that still need to be put on albums from The Game to Made in Heaven.
Queen Timeline:
The complete timeline, with dates on a year by year basis, month by month, day by day. (Sheamus; i have a separate doc called “frekin stories” (i forgot the word when writing and somehow typed it out?) that’s collecting various stories that don’t have specific dates so we know where about to add them in. has a lot of room for speculative work).
Queen Docuseries:
We’ve got 18 episodes in total with each named accordingly and each episode has a basic outline of what to include in it. All scripts so far on on this doc, so lots of words.
70s Articles:
Sheamus here. I found this site that had an archive of all British newspapers but it was only accessible on a UK IP address so I transcribed the articles onto this doc and then I found more articles floating around and so far this doc is filled with 246 pages from 10th december 1970 to december ‘79. TLDR; lots of articles.
80s Articles:
As above but make it 80s.
Social Media Pages
Jaxon came up with the name of Queenthology and it stuck. It’s our youtube, instagram and that may be all, wait, no we have a tumblr too, but that’s our reach so far. We may expand but it depends
Further things to do:
Pre-Production:
Scripting:
Right so as of October 26th we’ve scripted episode one and two and I (sheamus) has just started work on episode three. They’re formatted as a script but if a professional script writer were to see it I would get shunned from the industry so it’s more of an outline of what to say, what to wear and where to film.
Research:
As it says on the tin. Always room to do more research.
Production:
Producing:
Jaxon here. At the moment, the only plans we’ve got are voice overs from Sheamus and myself. I recently purchased a $99 Apex microphone last week, and along with that, an audio interface which takes the signals from the microphone and puts it directly into the computer. We also plan to search for people we can interview with an updated version of this proposal, once we’ve completed a rough demo of everything.
Filming:
Jaxon here. Since Sheamus resides in West London, she has agreed to do photography/filmography of some of the more well-known locations that come up when Queen is analyzed and discussed. (Sheamus here, can confirm. I’d be willing to swim down to Atlantis if Queen ever did a gig there).
Post-Production:
Editing:
Jaxon here. As of October 2020, I am saving up money to purchase the $300 behemoth: Final Cut Pro. I will learn to use it so I can help visually piece together the docu-series.
Releasing:
Jaxon here. This one wasn’t discussed too much between us, but we plan to release one episode a week and Sheamus and I hope for a release period between July 3rd - October 30th. We’re currently working on a preliminary schedule which should keep us on track. More updates will be coming along anytime between a week from now to a month from now.
