I was reading a book titled "666 Songs to Make You Bang Your Head Until You Die: A Guide to the Monsters of Rock and Metal". The book as you can tell was a book dedicated to hard rock and heavy metal songs. Queen had four songs in the book. They were Fight From The Inside, We Will Rock You, Innuendo and Gimme The Prize. When I was reading the entry for Fight From The Inside, one music critic described the song as proto-funk metal. This intrigued me because I always knew about the heavy funk elements to that particular song, but did this song predated bands such as Red Hot Chilli Peppers?
So first off what is Funk Metal? Well, Funk Metal is a fusion with funk rock and metal which has syncopated rhythms and popping basslines. So would I consider Fight From The Inside proto-funk metal? I would honestly say, Yes. The song is predominantly focused on the bass and drums with a jangly guitar riff.

That is always my issue with genres. Sometimes you cannot put a label on a song. Or why would you even. To me, a song sounds and feels good or not. Does not matter if it is pop, rock, rap, classical etc. What is proto-funk metal anyway? Is it a made-up genre so the song can be put into a box? FFTI is just a fantastic song I think and that is all that matters to me

I think that the really Queen proto punk come from Sheer heart attack ( Stone cold crazy) or Sheer heart attack track. maybe more SCC Here we see the split between the roots of US-blues based rock and the English music hall style. SCC is more fast blues, but I'd say Modern Times is more likely as a chassis for classic 1977 punk, built as it was musically and lyrically around the Bowie repurposing of Velvet Underground riffs on his earlier Hang On To Yourself. Regarding proto funk metal, if Roger is responsible for RHCP he should make an apology at the palace
