A very 80s sounding song and video - fun to listen to!
Did Queen fans know about the collaboration back in the 80s as it wasn't so popular?

Considering the movie this song was written for totally bombed and the song didn't even chart I'd be surprised if anyone other than the Peter Cushing and Queen fanbase ever heard the song.

I could always hear Freddie singing this one. A nice bubbly number, akin to Rain Must Fall. Would've been a fun album track.

Yes we were. People may not know that there was an ABUNDANCE of music shows on the channels in the 1980's. Before MTV became something big there were standalone shows featuring pop hits around the clock virtually. And yes, these also featured the immortals track. Of course we wondered for a while whether Deacy had been sidetracking or two-timing. Or if he was going to leave Queen. Before "A kind of Magic" there was a TON of speculation whether Queen was breaking up. Everyone was doing solo material and there hadn't been a Queen record for two years, let alone a live concert apart from Live Aid. To us Live Aid really was some sort of "reunion". We sat there and were reminded that Queen still were out there. The mid 1980's saw the demise of many a seventies band. Bands appeared in 1982 and were gone in 1984 already. Very, very common. So if "A kind of magic" had been delayed by a year or two the world would have seriously believed that Queen had not survived the fast changing pace of the 1980's.

Pretty standard 80s film tie in single fare.. you couldn't release a big family film by the mid 80s without attaching a tie-in promotional single to it. Even if (as was normally the case) the song was banished to the end credits.
(BTW "Biggles" is not a bad film. Worth a watch if you're of a certain vintage/ fond of 80s semi-fantasy films.)
As for the song, perhaps a little too "Sussudio" musically and sonically, even down to the horn 'stabs'.. Then again "Sussudio" was a little too "1999".
Interesting to me how electronic it is. John seemed very keen on programming and sequencing songs he was involved in, from Hot Space onwards. His remix of I Cry For You is similar in some ways to this track, with barely a bass guitar in earshot.

I would've loved to have heard a Freddie-sung version. Same with Talking of Love, I Dream of Christmas, Golden Days...

wonder if the "band name" Immortals was a nice little homage to Highlander? would make sense in that Queen music was linked to a few movies during this period:
Iron Eagle, Biggles, The Teachers and Highlander.

Maybe if I mention for a third time in this thread that a Freddie-sung version would've been cool, one will emerge from the archives...

I don't think this song was ever released digitally, apart from maybe as part of a digital promo video on one of the DVD/BR Biggles releases? The 7" and 12" remixes have definitely never been released digitally so far to my knowledge.

i was very aware of it. back then i collected everything Queen. there were various mixes of the song - but not really particularly distinct or interesting. the long 6'+ 12" joy-stick mix, the standard 3'57" single version and another at the same playing time called the chocks-away mix (b side).

The Beetlejuice method didn’t work so I’ll go with the annoying brat approach: Sure would be nice if a Freddie-sung version of No Turning Back showed up.
Hell, I’ll take a Freddie vocal of Talking of Love at this point.

A Freddie take of Funny Old Life Ain't It is high on my wish list.

Here is an interview with Lenny Zakatek: Really interesting interview! Thanks for sharing. So had the single been a hit (was definitely a possibility as it was a movie tie-in) then there would likely have been an album? Considering it's been widely reported that John was quite frustrated in his life / Queen around that time, I wonder what it would have meant for the future of Queen had this happened?! With The Cross, you always knew that it was a side project for Roger but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't the case for John

It actually does sound like it could have been a mid-80s Queen song or even a Freddie solo track!

Posted this in the John 'collaborations" thread but this is Minako Honda's track "Roulette" - essentially the same song as "No Turning Back" but a different mix, with John on bass guitar, and verses sung in Japanese.. (and with the original chorus inexplicably sung in English)..

Imagine if the song sung by Freddie would be a real rumour just like the "Don't Try So Hard" video.
Haha

I seriously could not imagine him being a member in another band. Projects more likely. Everyone's life has a reason and John's must have been Queen. At least the reason in a job.

No, I'm not replying to say that a Freddie version would be great (though it would), but a discovery I made – simply by reading the LP's (or, in this case, the cassette's) liner notes: Well, a few actually: first, David Minns (I forget how he's related to the band but I do know he was an early amor of Freddie's) was the music co-ordinator, and second, there's quite a few extra musicians on the song: if you can't read the notes, they're Richard Cottle (keyboards), Steve Gregory (saxophone – also on One Year of Love), Steve Waterman and Guy Barker (trumpets), Bud Beadle (sax), Sylvie James and Ruby Mason-James (backing vocals), and Luke Creswell (percussion). I genuinely believed that John, Robert, and Lenny were the only three to perform on this song, and while I obviously hear the backing vocals, everything else (brass and percussion) sounded programmed. Remixing is also credited to Bert Bevans, but a cursory listen to the other versions all sound relatively the same, with seemingly no additional remixing: Chocks Away Mix: Joy-Stick Mix: Not terribly fascinating, but I find it moderately interesting when I find additional musicians otherwise uncredited – or, in this case, hiding in plain sight for 36 years.
