Another one of those false rumours is that Brian used a Martin D-18. I'm afraid I'm the one to blame for that: some equipment list from the late seventies revealed John had a D-18 and I incorrectly assumed so did Brian and Frederick, and then it caught fire. Now loads of websites and databases have it, even though the source (in this case, myself) was less than trustworthy to say the least. I remember reading somewhere that it wasn't a D-18, but I stupidly didn't save the website, the url or the info. Does anybody know? Here's the guitar in question: Ta!

It looks like a martin logo on the headstock in the last pic to me, so maybe some other model...?

Yes, it's definitely a Martin but not a D18.

Yes, it's definitely a Martin but not a D18. I’m not so sure, but could be very wrong. Is it a Tokai “humming bird” Brian acquired one in Japan in 1975. In the 70’s Tokai sometimes used artistic license with there logos. None of the photos of the guitar show the logo clearly, but it could say hummingbird in the style of a Martin logo.

As far as I can see, that's a complete match with the Martin logo, including the "Est. 1833" line below. Sebastian, maybe you could try asking this question on umgf.com/? There are bound to be more Martin-connoisseurs there than here.

This might be a Martin D-35, look at the white binding around the neck of the guitar. The D-35 had this in the 70s.

It's a Martin X Series. The two Mother of Pearl buttons on the neck are only at the 12th fret on a D-18 as well as most guitars of any brand, whereas this one has the two buttons at the 7th fret as well, on a D-18, it would only have one. I have a Martin with the two buttons at the 12th and at the 7th and the model of that is an X Series, it's a different colour to Brian's but everything else is exactly the same.

The X Series was introduced in 1998. This is 70's D35, also 2 Mother of Pearl buttons at the 7th fret:

I think we discussed awhile back about the difference between the D-18 and D-35 months ago. I got caught up with work when quarantine relaxed a bit awhile back.

Do acoustic guitars increase in value like some electric ones do? I would say so. Definitely worth thousands, Martin is one of the most reputable acoustic guitar companies out there. Though he would never sell (and neither would I) because of the sentimental value! For anyone who is particularly interested in how guitars are made, Martin's factory is in Pennsylvania, USA and they give fantastic tours. I highly suggest visiting during more normal times.
