Here's another picture taken with my phone (actually I took many like this to try stacking them, didn't turn out quite as nice as I'd hoped). Since it's taken from my backyard it's not perfect, but I think you can faintly see the milky way (correct me if I'm wrong). Taken on the 19th of August this year, at 2am. Shutter: 20s ISO: 320 Focal length: 27mm, equivalent to 35 mm focal length film (how does this work exactly? It's just what my phone tells me but I'm not too sure how to interpret that) F: 1.60 (again, that's what my phone tells me, how does that work?)
With just a bit of editing to make it a bit less washed out, but not that big of an improvement, I got this:
Also the result of the stacking (in total I took about 30 of those photos to stack into this):

yes, it's definitely there.
the settings you're using: Shutter: 20s ISO: 320 Focal length: 27mm, equivalent to 35 mm focal length film F/1.6
i'd adjust slightly, start with the rule of 500. so if your focal length is 35mm equivalent, then your maximum exposure is 14 secs. i'd crank up your ISO to compensate.
did you save as jpeg? or does you phone camera also save as raw? also, if you have pshop or affinity photo, get yourself the Astroflat filter (and Asto Tools Actions for PShop) - you'll probably find a lot more buried in your images that the filter can bring out.

Here's my first attempt at taking a picture of the moon, on xmas eve. It's a very amateur setup: phone camera held against telescope eyepiece.

Here's an attempt to get some surface details near the terminator. Using greater magnification made my pictures darker. It's also a little difficult not to blur the pictures holding my phone with my hand. I suppose I'm gonna have to buy a phone mount for my eyepiece.

Looks like most of the metadata got wiped when I uploaded them to Imgur. I don't think my settings are worth copying, but either way I uploaded the original files on Google Drive in case you'd like to take a look: drive.google.com/file/d/1g9mQo8o0J3w3jQgbE461aMb9eqfphJ9W/view?usp=sharingdrive.google.com/file/d/1uUcbKyJo36qW7TBShtsfYtoALVT09sph/view?usp=sharingUnfortunately my phone saves them as .jpg, perhaps it's time I look up to see if there's any app where I can adjust more settings (mine doesn't allow me to even adjust shutter speed or ISO) and export raw pictures instead. I also got a phone mount for my telescope, to try to get sharper shots (or at least stop torturing myself trying). Let's see when the weather will let me give it a go!

Just ordered a 20mm f1.8 lens, in anticipation of some clear nights when winter ends and we're allowed out of our homes again... from what I read it should improve my sky images a fair bit (technically, not compositionally!)

I have a couple of Samyang lenses for my Canon 200d - a 14mm F/2.8 and an 85mm F/1.4 i've just upgraded my mobile phone and the camera is supposed to have an F/1.9 aperture.

I'm on a sony a7iii, anything I've posted previously was taken at 24mm and f4, hence the high expectations!
I wasn't aware of HA filters, so have just had an interesting browse....it seems that I'd need to take out the filter to get rgb info, to combine with the monochrome HA image, is that right? Not sure I'm up for that - maybe if I was using a telescope as well...

Not sure I'm up for that - maybe if I was using a telescope as well... ah yes, with a mirrorless you would yes. the "other route" is to grab as many images as possible - on a tracked EQ mount. have you seen this: Omegon Minitrack LX2 - it's lightweight, clockwork and gives you an hour of tracking. Omegon Minitrack LX2 - it's a genius bit of kit. with PIPP and Deep Sky Stacker/Registax for stacking and some final image processing will bring out the HA.

At the minute, I'm stacking images for the sky and merging with a single land image.
At least that is the idea...execution is tricky!

Black Wings Chief Mouse ThomasQuinn jon_innuendo HelloDelilah Chopin1995 pg emrabt The Real Wizard Lord Fickle Raf katydyd5a little update, this week a usually well-hidden planet paid a visit. Uranus was barely visible (no smutty comments). It was nicely lined up (the faint blue dot) below Mars. It's a pity that these things happen when the moon is close by and bright (to boot) - makes processing difficult. I've included two shots, and animated gif and a crop. While out grabbing some images, a couple of satellites passed through the FOV. I still haven't been able to identify them. Equipment used: Canon 200d, Samyang 85mm F/1.4 lens Settings: ISO = 800, Aperture = 1.4, shutter = 3 secs,

Last night I caught a glimpse at both Uranus (...) and Mars too, but I wasn't lucky enough to get both of them at the same time with the telescope. According to Star Walk I might've been able to do that last Monday, but as usual, most nights here have been cloudy/rainy.

been cloudy most nights for weeks here too! Mars and Uranus will be together again tonight - just after sunset. so if you've a clear sky you may be lucky.

I guess there's no hope things will be crystal clear in a couple of hours... I'll spend the weekend in a house in a small, almost rural town - and as a bonus it's also up in the mountains. If it isn't cloudy, it'll probably be the best sky I'll see in over two years!

Very cool! Unfortunately, I'd have to ride way into the 'polders' to get far enough away from the flood of lights to even have a chance of seeing Uranus, which has just gone from 'a hassle' to 'a misdemeanor' here in the Netherlands, so I'll have to make do with the pictures you guys take!

Black Wings Chief Mouse ThomasQuinn jon_innuendo HelloDelilah Chopin1995 pg emrabt The Real Wizard Lord Fickle Raf katydyd5back in Oct I set the dslr up on a timer and grabbed 300 x 10sec images @f/2.8 (Canon 200D/14mm Samyang lens). I'f not done much with the images - they were cluttered with man-made visitors, but out of interest I've revisited them with a freeware piece of windows software called Sequatar. I've taken 92 of those 300 images and stacked them using Sequator and (although I'm still finding my way around the software) the initial results really do make the foreground stars pop and the hidden background stars become more apparent. I've tried using Deep Sky Stacker and Registax, but Sequator's learning curve is a little more "senior photographer compatible". There's one piece of software I'd really like Astroart 7.0 - but I can't justify €135 for an application that I'll only ever use for one specific task.

Maybe you've seen it already, but on the main page of spaceweather.com/, there's a short article with a photo college titled "SIRIUS IS PULSING WITH COLOR", I thought you might find it interesting.

Black Wings Chief Mouse ThomasQuinn jon_innuendo HelloDelilah Chopin1995 pg emrabt The Real Wizard Lord Fickle Raf katydyd5 Stevenot much in the way of "good seeing" these last two weeks. Sirius is currently too low (which happens to be best position for the colour-effect) to image through a wall of neighbourhood trees. maybe, when lockdown ends i can venture out somewhere. however, i did set the camera up this week to test a new Pshop/Affinity plugin filter. This one is called Starspikes. The basis of this is that, it adds the natural spikes to images that we can't see. The light is there, and the filter accentuates this. I tried not to over-egg the cake (the filter has so many options, that the image could've easily ended up like a pop video from 1967). First Image: Canon 200d / Samyang 85mm F/1.4 lens 50 images (stacked) each image = 5sec, iso 12800, f/1.4 - Astroflat and Starspikes filters applied. Second Image: the same 50 images converted to timelapse and edited in Magix MEP Premium. - retaining the satellites removed by the stacking process. This was approximately 8 minutes of sky (with delays between shots) - I count around 10 satellites!
